Mérida English Library is a non-profit community library open to the public, offering books, cultural programs, educational activities, and a welcoming space for readers of all ages. The Merida English Library (MEL) is a non-profit lending library open to the public and dedicated to serving Mérida’s diverse international and local community. Inspired by the classic public library model found throu

ghout the United States and Canada, MEL has become a vibrant hub for reading, learning, cultural exchange, and community connection. Our mission is to provide access to English-language books and materials in a welcoming environment that supports education, recreation, and lifelong learning. Through a yearly membership program, members enjoy borrowing privileges, community activities, and access to a growing collection of more than 19,000 titles, including fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, and resources related to Yucatán and Maya culture. As a Mexican non-profit organization, we proudly serve Yucatán’s cross-cultural community by fostering dialogue, creativity, and shared learning. Beyond books, MEL hosts a wide variety of programs and events throughout the year, including educational talks, language classes, cultural events, children’s programs, and community gatherings. Our library is a welcoming space where residents, visitors, and travelers can read, learn, meet others, connect to Wi-Fi, or relax in our peaceful garden setting in the heart of Mérida.

Modern Art in Latin America

The history of modern Latin American art is deeply connected to the political, social, and cultural transformations of the region. Revolutions, dictatorships, indigenous movements, migration, economic crises, and struggles for democracy have all shaped the work of generations of artists.

Beginning Monday, October 5, instructor Raúl Gasque will explore modern and contemporary Latin American art through the artistic traditions of Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay.

Rather than following a chronological history of art, this four-session course looks at the relationship between artistic production and the historical contexts in which it emerged. Participants will explore movements and ideas including Modernism, the Avant-Garde, Indigenismo, Muralism, Kinetic Art, Conceptual Art, the Neo-Avant-Garde, Coloniality, Decolonial Thought, and Memory Studies, while discovering the work of some of Latin America's most influential artists.

Each three-hour session combines lectures, visual analysis, and creative workshops.
