We celebrated the graduation of our 2026 Kazen Fellowship—a milestone that marks the end of an unforgettable summer and the beginning of exciting new journeys.

Congratulations to our student speakers, Christina Ramirez and Noé Salinas, for representing their fellow graduates with thoughtful reflections on the impact of this experience. Thank you to Judge Diana Saldaña and Judge Diana Song-Quiroga for celebrating alongside our Fellows and sharing words of encouragement as they prepare for the next chapter.

A special thank you to our Program Director, Sophia Duarte, whose unwavering dedication, compassion, and countless hours of hard work made this fellowship such a meaningful experience. Your commitment to every Fellow has left a lasting impact that extends far beyond this summer.

While this marks the end of the fellowship, it isn’t goodbye—it’s simply see you later. We cannot wait to see all that our Fellows accomplish, and we know this is only the beginning of the incredible difference they will make in their communities and beyond. 💙

After weeks of preparation, the courtroom was ready. ⚖️🏛️

Throughout the fellowship, our Fellows worked diligently to prepare for their Mock Trial case, United States of America v. Devin Martinez. From developing arguments and preparing witnesses to practicing courtroom procedures, they put their knowledge and skills into action during their final trial.

Congratulations to our Fellows for their dedication, teamwork, and commitment throughout this experience. A special thank you to all of the attorneys, law clerks, judges, and mentors who guided them every step of the way and helped bring this opportunity to life!

Art encourages us to see the world from different perspectives 🎨✨

Our Fellows visited the Laredo Center for the Arts, where they explored works by talented local artists and learned more about Laredo’s vibrant artistic community. Inspired by the exhibits, they then created their own drawings, reflecting on people, places, and experiences that hold special meaning to them.

Our Fellows learned valuable resume-building tips from law clerks and judicial interns, who shared advice on highlighting their skills, presenting their experiences, and preparing for future opportunities. After the presentation, Fellows received personalized feedback and worked on revising their resumes with guidance from mentors in the legal field.

“Objection!” ⚖️🎤

Mock Trial preparation was in full swing as our Fellows stepped into the roles of attorneys and witnesses to practice direct and cross examinations. Taking turns at the podium and on the stand, they worked through questions, responses, and courtroom techniques to prepare for their upcoming trial.

Each practice brings them one step closer to confidently presenting their case in the courtroom!

Understanding the law means exploring the many ways it impacts our everyday lives. ⚖️📚

Our Fellows learned about Civil Law, gaining insight into how legal disputes are resolved, the role of attorneys and courts in civil matters, and the importance of fairness and justice in the legal system. Through discussion and real-world examples, they expanded their understanding of another important area of the law.

Our Fellows had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Nitya Murthy, who shared valuable study strategies, tips for preparing for the SAT and AP exams, and advice for achieving their future goals. Through her guidance and encouragement, our Fellows gained helpful resources to approach their academics with confidence and continue building habits that will support their success.

The details matter when preparing a case for the courtroom. ⚖️📝

Our Fellows continued their Mock Trial preparation by working with their witnesses, developing questions, and practicing responses to ensure they were ready for their upcoming trial. With guidance from experienced attorneys and law clerks, they received valuable feedback and insight into the preparation, strategy, and teamwork required to present a case.

Every jury plays an important role in the pursuit of justice. ⚖️🏛️

Our Fellows explored the process of jury selection in their Law and Courts class through an interactive courtroom activity. Racing across the courtroom to answer whether potential jurors would be accepted or dismissed, they learned how attorneys and judges evaluate jurors and how different perspectives help shape a fair jury.

Through teamwork, critical thinking, and a little friendly competition, our Fellows gained a deeper understanding of the important decisions that take place before a trial even begins. Thank you to Judge Diana Song Quiroga for sharing your knowledge and helping our Fellows gain valuable insight into the legal process!

Our Fellows spent the day sharpening their advocacy skills during Mock Trial preparation alongside attorneys and law clerks from across Laredo. Through hands-on coaching, constructive feedback, and collaborative practice, they strengthened their courtroom presence, refined their arguments, and gained valuable insight into the skills that make an effective advocate.
