Over on the eastern side, the Gulf of California acts as a massive thermal heat engine, with surface waters ranging from very warm to hot across the upper basin. By early next week, the intense heat dome will begin to abate slightly, allowing a slightly deeper marine layer to return to the western coastal valleys during the night and morning hours.
