NE Pacific: Tropical Weather Analysis & Forecast

The tropical picture across the Eastern Pacific basin presents a very quiet, open atmospheric canvas this morning. A dominant high-pressure ridge stationed over the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico continues as our main weather anchor, maintaining a compressed marine layer along the western coast while driving an intense heat dome across inland desert valleys.
Because there are currently no active tropical storms or hurricanes anywhere in the basin, this strong atmospheric ridge remains unimpeded, steering gentle-to-moderate airflow across the offshore waters. However, the thermal low drawing heat over the interior deserts acts like an atmospheric pump, continuously pulling warm, muggy air northward up the Gulf of California. This steady push of tropical humidity, combined with high-level moisture drifting off tropical waves further south, will keep air conditions feeling thick and sticky across the central and southern sectors of the peninsula.

Disturbance 1: Western East Pacific & Central Pacific
Positioned far to the southwest over open tropical ocean waters, a broad area of low pressure is forecast to gradually take shape early next week. Environmental conditions around this disturbance remain mostly unfavorable for fast organization over the next two days, keeping development odds near zero percent. As it drifts generally westward at 10 to 15 mph toward the Central Pacific basin, forecasters give it only a low 30 percent chance of slow tropical formation over the next seven days. Because this system is tracking steadily west away from land, it poses no threat to the Baja peninsula.
Disturbance 2: Southwest of Mexico
Further east, another broad low-pressure area is projected to organize well offshore from the southwestern coast of Mexico late this weekend or early next week. Development over the next 48 hours is virtually zero percent, with the National Hurricane Center marking a low 30 percent chance for gradual organization over the seven-day period as it tracks west-northwestward. While its core will remain far off the Mexican coastline, meteorologists will monitor its broad outer circulation as it moves parallel to the deep offshore waters.

Looking ahead across the basin, the National Hurricane Center indicates a low probability of organizing tropical cyclones near the peninsula over the next seven days. Four active tropical waves positioned along the equator continue moving westward between 5 and 15 knots, acting as deep moisture feeds for the Intertropical Convergence Zone rather than land-threatening storms.
As we move deeper into August, these tropical waves will encounter exceptionally warm ocean waters across the lower latitudes. Meteorologists expect overall tropical activity to become much more dynamic as late summer approaches, with stronger atmospheric waves likely triggering new tropical systems later in the month.

Coastal Ocean & Surf Hazards
While tropical storm activity remains quiet, a steady, long-period northwest swell train generated far out in the Pacific will continue to energy our western beaches today. Waves with 12-to-14-second periods will create heightened surf and energetic breaking waves along exposed Pacific shorelines.
Beachgoers, mariners, and coastal anglers from Ensenada down through Eréndira, San Quintín, and San Carlos should prepare for increased rip current activity and localized shorebreak along west-facing beaches. High tide cycles will combine with this ocean swell energy to produce localized water run-up along low-lying beach strands.
Monsoonal Moisture & Thunderstorm Potential
As high-level tropical moisture streams northward around the high-pressure ridge, daytime solar heating over the central mountain spine will destabilize the upper air column.
This setup will bring a solid chance for localized, pop-up afternoon convective clouds and scattered mountain showers over the Sierra de Juárez, Sierra de San Pedro Mártir, and Sierra de la Laguna. Localized squalls or thunder builds developing along the high ridges could drift into nearby foothills and inland valleys through late afternoon and early evening.
