STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY AND CONDOLENCES

BUREAU OF NGO NETWORKING, ACTIVISTS & INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

SRIKANDI BERSATU MALAYSIA

STANDING IN SOLIDARITY WITH NEPAL AND CHINA

28 August 2026

The Bureau of NGO Networking, Activists & International Relations, BERSATU extends our deepest condolences and heartfelt solidarity to the people of Nepal and China, particularly the communities affected by the devastating flash floods and glacial landslide along the Nepal–China border.

The catastrophic disaster has resulted in significant loss of life, widespread destruction and a large number of people still unaccounted for. Rescue and recovery efforts remain ongoing on both sides of the border.

Our deepest sympathies go to the families who have lost their loved ones, those anxiously waiting for news of missing family members, the injured, displaced communities and all those affected by this tragedy.

We also extend our solidarity to the many foreign nationals caught in the disaster, including Malaysians who may have been affected.

HUMANITY MUST COME BEFORE BORDERS

This tragedy is a painful reminder that natural disasters do not recognise political boundaries.

In moments of humanitarian crisis, our differences must not divide us. What matters most is the preservation of human life, the protection of communities and the collective responsibility to help those in need.

We commend the efforts of the governments and authorities of Nepal and China, emergency responders, security forces, humanitarian organisations, volunteers and local communities who are working tirelessly in search, rescue, relief and recovery operations.

STRENGTHENING CROSS-BORDER HUMANITARIAN COOPERATION

As a bureau responsible for NGO networking, activism and international relations, BERSATU believes that this tragedy highlights the importance of stronger cross-border humanitarian cooperation.

The Himalayas are shared by communities and ecosystems that transcend national boundaries. Disaster preparedness, early-warning systems, emergency communication and humanitarian response therefore require cooperation beyond borders.

We encourage greater collaboration among:

- Governments and emergency response agencies;
- NGOs and humanitarian organisations;
- International relief agencies;
- Civil society and volunteer networks;
- Environmental and disaster-management experts; and
- Communities living in vulnerable border regions.

Such cooperation can strengthen our collective ability to respond to future disasters and protect communities before tragedy strikes.

PEOPLE-TO-PEOPLE DIPLOMACY

We also believe that international relations are not built solely through governments.

They are strengthened through people-to-people relationships — through NGOs, humanitarian organisations, volunteers, activists, professionals and communities standing together during times of hardship.

This tragedy provides an opportunity for Malaysia, Nepal, China and the wider international community to deepen cooperation in humanitarian assistance, disaster preparedness, climate resilience and community-based emergency response.

For BERSATU, humanitarian diplomacy is an important bridge between nations.

MALAYSIA'S ROLE

Malaysia has a strong tradition of humanitarian solidarity and civil-society engagement.

We believe Malaysian NGOs and humanitarian networks can play a constructive role by building partnerships with credible organisations in Nepal and China, while working in coordination with the relevant authorities and international humanitarian mechanisms.

Any humanitarian assistance should be coordinated, transparent and guided by the actual needs of affected communities.

Our role as civil society is not to replace governments or emergency agencies, but to complement their efforts, strengthen community support and build bridges between people.

OUR MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE OF NEPAL AND CHINA

At this difficult hour, our message is simple:

You are not alone.

From Malaysia, we stand with the people of Nepal and China.

We pray for the souls of those who have lost their lives, for the safe recovery of those who remain missing, for the healing of the injured and for strength and courage for every family affected by this devastating tragedy.

May this tragedy strengthen—not weaken—the bonds of cooperation between nations.

May it remind us that while borders may separate countries, humanity connects us all.

Humanity knows no borders.
Solidarity knows no distance.
And in times of tragedy, we stand together.
