Rentetan perjalanan Malaysia bukan sahaja terpapar melalui peristiwa penting, malah terpancar pada landskap fizikal yang memayunginya. Merentasi era yang berbeza, bangunan dan ruang awam telah menjadi pentas kepada perdagangan, pentadbiran, ibadah, perhimpunan dan pembentukan negara. Seni bina setiap zaman mencerminkan fungsi dan cita citanya, sementara kehidupan di sekelilingnya menentukan bagaimana sesuatu tempat terus bermakna. Apabila ruang bersejarah dipulihara dan diberi nafas baharu, memorinya akan terus mekar, mengalir seiring degup nadi kemajuan negara.

Sempena sambutan Hari Kebangsaan ke-69, mari kita telusuri mercu tanda, seni bina dan naratif sejarah Malaysia, dari Fort Cornwallis dan Padang Kota Lama di pesisir George Town, ke Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad di pertemuan Sungai Klang dan Sungai Gombak, hingga Dataran Merdeka dan Stadium Merdeka yang menjadi saksi kepada detik kemerdekaan pada tahun 1957.

A space becomes a place only once people return to it, use it, and build a routine around it. That belief carried through a knowledge sharing session held last week for Institut Latihan DBKL at Pejabat Pos Besar Lama (PPBL), the first session of this kind hosted by Think City and DBKL at the venue.

60 officers attended, primarily from Jabatan Perancangan Bandaraya. Titled ‘Managing Heritage as a Living City Asset: Planning, Conservation and Placemaking in Kuala Lumpur’, the session drew from Dataran Merdeka Heritage Area as a case study: research, city planning, cultural curation, adaptive reuse, and the everyday work of keeping heritage buildings in use.

Dr Ceelia Leong, Mariana Isa, Nina Idris, A’ishah Anam and Justin Khoo of Think City led the discussion, together with Ainnura Sabirin of NTL, PPBL’s facility manager.

Heritage is most secure when it is treated not as something set aside from the city, but as a working part of it: buildings that continue to be used, maintained and valued. The session closed with a technical visit to Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad and Pejabat Pos Besar Lama, where the same idea played out on the ground, conservation and contemporary use sitting side by side.

Sustaining Kuala Lumpur’s heritage assets over the long term rests on the capacity and commitment of those who plan, regulate and care for the city every day. Thank you, Institut Latihan DBKL, for the invitation, and to every officer who joined for a thoughtful and engaged discussion.

Think City Managing Director Dato' Hamdan Abdul Majeed recently joined the River Flooding Adaptation and Resilience (RIFAR) Showcase 2026, hosted by the Securities Commission Malaysia, speaking on the panel "Mobilising Private Capital within Blended Finance Structures for Adaptation." He was joined by Tuan Ahmad Farid bin Mohammed, Undersecretary for Climate Change Division at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, and Mr. Joel Khaw, Head of Group Sustainability, Strategic Management and Governance at RHB Bank Berhad, with the discussion moderated by Datin Nurlin Mohd Salleh, Managing Director of Boston Consulting Group.

The panel centred on a shift that has become increasingly urgent: moving from a long-standing focus on climate mitigation towards adaptation, and accelerating the funding needed to get there. Dato' Hamdan's remarks centred on a simple point, that successful adaptation begins with understanding the climate problem at the ground level, as every location and community carries its own vulnerabilities and needs.

Think City's own work reflects this approach. Our Penang Nature-based Climate Adaptation Programme (PNBCAP), Malaysia's first urban climate adaptation programme of its kind, was built on exactly this ground-up understanding. The same approach now extends to our sponge city model with Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam, using Nature-based Solutions to manage water, reduce flood risk and help mitigate urban heat, an example of adaptation designed for the future rather than for yesterday's climate.

Advancing a resilient future for Malaysia's cities is a shared undertaking, drawing together regulators, government, financial institutions, local authorities, and the communities most affected by climate change. Think City extends its appreciation to the Securities Commission Malaysia and TRAC for the invitation to be part of this conversation, and looks forward to continued collaboration in building climate resilience across Malaysian cities.

A look back at the reopening of Fort Cornwallis and the people who brought it back to life.

Following a decade of conservation, Fort Cornwallis reopened its doors, welcoming families, students and visitors to explore its restored spaces and new interpretation galleries, and encounter the many layers of history that have shaped Penang and Malaysia.

Its reopening marks a new chapter in the wider North Seafront Programme, reconnecting Fort Cornwallis, Padang Kota Lama and the waterfront as part of George Town’s historic civic landscape, bringing heritage back into the life of the city and its people.

As the YAB Prime Minister reflected at the reopening, preserving our heritage is also about understanding the history that shaped us and ensuring its meaning is carried forward by Malaysians. Through conservation, interpretation and renewed public spaces, the North Seafront creates opportunities to understand our shared past, celebrate the diversity that strengthens us, and shape our future together in the spirit of Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu.

The initiative is led by the George Town Conservation and Development Corporation (GTCDC), a partnership between Chief Minister Incorporated and Think City, with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture as Technical Adviser, together with the City Council of Penang Island (MBPP), and Yayasan Hasanah as strategic partner.

Meet Looi Mun Loong of Graffiti Spot, a grantee who aims at bringing colour and energy to the city centre. For Mun Loong, graffiti is more than paint on a wall, it is a form of artistry and self-expression, a visual language through which young people can lay claim to the spaces they move through every day.

By opening up walls as canvases, the project invites young participants to become active contributors to Downtown KL rather than passers-by — learning a craft, finding a voice, and leaving something of themselves in the fabric of the city. It is a reminder that a lively, vibrant city centre is not only built through infrastructure and restoration, but through the creative energy of the people who choose to make it their own.

Selama hampir 240 tahun, Fort Cornwallis telah menjadi saksi kepada perjalanan Pulau Pinang, daripada sebuah petempatan maritim yang berkembang menjadi sebuah bandar raya yang pelbagai budaya dan bertaraf dunia. Setiap lapisan sejarah di sini mencerminkan perjalanan sebuah negeri yang terus berkembang, serta menyumbang kepada pembentukan identiti dan jati diri Malaysia.

Hari ini, Fort Cornwallis memulakan lembaran baharu sebagai sebuah ruang warisan awam, dipulihara dan dihidupkan semula agar rakyat dapat menelusuri sejarah, memahami perjalanan yang membentuk Pulau Pinang, serta menghayati nilai kepelbagaian, daya tahan dan semangat kebersamaan yang terus membentuk negara kita.

Usaha ini merupakan sebahagian daripada Program Pesisir Laut Utara, yang diterajui oleh George Town Conservation and Development Corporation - GTCDC melalui kerjasama Kerajaan Negeri Pulau Pinang dan Think City, serta disokong oleh Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang - MBPP, Aga Khan Trust for Culture sebagai Penasihat Teknikal serta Yayasan Hasanah.
