【Consul-General’s Visit to the ROSE Senior Centre of ROSE Charities 】

On September 2nd, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, visited the ROSE Senior Centre operated by ROSE Charities Malaysia, where he toured the Centre’s activities and exchanged views with its representatives. Established in 2009, ROSE Charities Malaysia is a non-profit organisation that conducts a wide range of activities, particularly for senior citizens, including health promotion, sports, education, social engagement and community support.
　　　
Representatives of ROSE Charities Malaysia introduced various activities conducted at the Centre, including table tennis, qigong, line dancing, cooking classes and handicrafts, as well as initiatives to improve digital literacy among senior citizens and to explore the use of AI for elderly monitoring and communication support. A digital literacy class for senior citizens organised by Digital Penang was also being held on the day of the visit. Mr. Machida learned about the Centre’s efforts to ensure that senior citizens are not left behind by digitalisation and can continue to maintain connections with the wider community.
　　　
Mr. Machida introduced the official chef accompanying him, as well as representatives involved in Japanese culture and the Japanese Saturday School, and exchanged views on possible future activities involving Japanese cuisine, Japanese sweets, tea ceremony and the Japanese language. Referring also to Japan’s experience as an ageing society, he expressed his hope that Japan and Penang could share experiences and learn from each other in creating a society in which senior citizens can remain connected to their communities and live active, enjoyable and meaningful lives.
　　　
During the visit, Mr. Machida also met Dato’ Peter Cheah, former Chairman of Seh Tek Tong Cheah Kongsi and currently Museum Advisor to the Straits & Oriental Museum, and exchanged views on Penang’s Chinese cultural heritage and history. The Consulate-General of Japan in Penang will continue to deepen exchanges with ROSE Charities Malaysia and other local community organisations, and to promote people-to-people exchanges between Japan and Penang through a broad range of areas including Japanese culture, senior citizen exchanges and education.

In the medical field, it has become possible to detect early-stage gastric cancer with over 90% accuracy through endoscopic examinations. This introduces AI technology born in Japan.

【Consul-General Attends the TKR Merdeka Run 2026 Ceremony 】

On August 30th, Mr Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, attended the ceremony of the “TKR Merdeka Run 2026”, organised by the Penang Forward Sports Club at BSG Galleria in Penang. The event was held on the eve of Malaysia’s 69th National Day and attracted approximately 3,000 participants. TKR is a free community running event held regularly to promote health and interaction through sports.
　　　
The ceremony was attended by YB Mr Steven Sim, Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives; YB Mr Daniel Gooi, Penang State Executive Councillor for Youth, Sports and Health; Prof Tan Sri Dr Tan Khoon Hai, Chairman of the Penang Chinese Town Hall; Dato’ Tom Khoo, Advisor of the Penang Forward Sports Club; Dato’ Lim Choo Hooi, Chairman of the Penang Forward Sports Club; as well as representatives from the government, sports organisations and the local community.
　　　
Dato’ Lim emphasised that sports serve as an effective bridge connecting people of different ages, races, professions and backgrounds, and stressed the importance of building a healthier and more united community. YB Sim noted that one of the important meanings of independence is “freedom”, including the freedom to cherish one’s own culture and religion, to choose one’s own friends, and to improve oneself. YB Gooi also highlighted the importance of mutual respect and of maintaining peace and unity within the community for Malaysia’s continued development.
　　　
Mr Machida interacted with the organisers and other participants at the ceremony and joined them in celebrating Malaysia’s National Day. The Consulate-General of Japan in Penang will continue to promote friendship between Japan and Malaysia, as well as with the people of Penang, through a wide range of opportunities for exchange, including sports and community-based activities.

【Consul-General Attends MOU Signing between Blue Santa Malaysia and MMI Care Association 】

On August 29th, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, attended the MOU signing ceremony between Blue Santa Malaysia and MMI Care Association held in Teluk Bahang, Penang, and witnessed the signing. The MOU aims to promote environmental awareness and encourage greater youth participation in environmental conservation activities.
　　　
MMI Care Association is an organisation engaged in the empowerment and educational support of young Malaysian Indian women and operates Miss Malaysia Indian Global. Through this MOU, participants in the programme are expected to take part in activities organised by Blue Santa Malaysia, a marine environmental conservation initiative originating in Japan, and deepen their understanding of marine environmental conservation and sustainability.
　　　Following the signing ceremony, participants of Miss Malaysia Indian Global took part in a beach clean-up activity, which Mr. Machida also observed. He also exchanged views with representatives of MMI Care Association and the Director of the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), on youth participation in environmental conservation activities and possible future exchanges and cooperation with Japan.
　　　
The Consulate-General of Japan in Penang will continue to support marine environmental conservation initiatives, including those of Blue Santa Malaysia, while encouraging the participation of young people and the wider community and further promoting exchanges and cooperation between Japan and Malaysia.

【Bunka Festival 2026 】

On August 29, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, attended the “Bunka Festival 2026” at Gurney Walk, co-organized by Gurney Walk, Bunka Sai, and JAGAM (Japan Graduates’ Association of Malaysia) Northern Branch. Mr. Machida, together with YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, delivered remarks at the festival’s official opening ceremony. 　

Mr. Machida introduced Japan’s school cultural festivals, known as “bunka-sai,” and expressed his appreciation that Japanese culture is warmly embraced in Penang’s diverse cultural environment. YB Wong highlighted Penang’s multicultural character and expressed his hope for the further expansion of tourism exchanges with Japan. He also stated that possibilities for air connectivity between Japan and Penang, including charter flights, were being explored.

The event featured a wide range of programs, including an Aikido demonstration, a choral performance by students, a live performance by Mr. Kenichi Yamasaki, an exhibition of itasha (anime-decorated cars), an ikebana display, a matcha tea experience, and cosplay activities.

The venue also featured a Japanese food corner and booths offering Japan-related goods, attracting large crowds well into the evening. The Consulate-General also set up a cultural exchange booth, where visitors could participate in origami and kirigami workshops and view various Japanese cultural items.

Looking ahead to the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Malaysia and the 50th anniversary of the decision to establish the Consulate-General in Penang in 2027, the Consulate-General will continue to deepen cooperation with JAGAM and other local partners and further promote exchanges through Japanese culture.
