Taman Negara

Taman Negara The largest national park in Peninsular Malaysia. "Taman Negara" literally means "National Park" in malay language.

It was established at the Titiwangsa Mountains, Malaysia, in 1938-1939 as the "King George V National Park" when Malaysia was still a British colony, thus making it the oldest national park of the country. It is also the largest, with a total area of 4343 square kilometers across three Malaysian states (Pahang - with the largest portion - Kelantan and Terengganu).

- One of the World's oldest rai

nforests

The tropical rainforest contained in the park has a reputation as one of the World's oldest, estimated to be more than 130 million years old, alongside with Belum. The park also hosts, apart from caves, rivers and rapids, the highest point of the Malay Peninsula, the Gunung Tahan.

- Fauna and flora

Taman Negara is the home of some rare mammals, such as the Malayan Tiger, Crab-eating macaque, Sumatran Rhinoceros, Malayan Gaur (seladang) and Asian elephant. As well as birds such as the Great Argus, Red Junglefowl, and the rare Malayan Peacock-Pheasant are still found here in some numbers. Tahan River has been preserved to protect the Malaysian mahseer (ikan kelah in Malay), a type of game fish. All visitors to the park must get permits from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks.
