Meeting with Sabah Society for the Deaf (SSD) Sabah Society For The Deaf

A meaningful meeting with the Sabah Society for the Deaf (SSD) — Persatuan Bagi Orang-Orang Pekak, Sabah.

Established in 1975, the Sabah Society for the Deaf has been serving Sabah’s Deaf community for more than five decades, with the aim of promoting their general welfare and supporting the community.

During our meeting, we learned more about the challenges faced in sustaining their work. As a non-profit organisation, SSD relies mainly on public donations to support its operating costs and continue its services for the Deaf community in Sabah.

As part of their fundraising efforts, SSD will be organising the SSD Charity Bazaar on 23 August 2026, from 8:00am to 3:00pm, at Car Park – SSD, Jalan Khidmat.

They are seeking support through cash contributions, contributions in kind, or the purchase of bazaar coupons, with the funds raised helping the Society sustain its operations.

We appreciate the opportunity to hear directly from SSD about the work they have been carrying out and the needs of the community they serve.

An inclusive Sabah means ensuring that every part of our community has the opportunity to participate, contribute and be supported.
We are glad to support efforts that strengthen our communities and help organisations such as Society For The Deaf to continue the important work they have been doing for many years. We also encourage the community to learn more about their work and support the upcoming Charity Bazaar where possible.

Meeting with SMJK SHAN TAO

We had a meaningful meeting with SMJK Shan Tao Kota Kinabalu. During our meeting, we had the opportunity to hear about an exciting opportunity for the SMJK Shan Tao Marching Band, which will be participating in the Thailand World Music Championships (TWMC) 2026 in Sisaket, Thailand, from 16–19 December 2026.

This international competition will give the students an opportunity to step beyond their usual environment, gain valuable international exposure, strengthen their skills and confidence, and experience competing on an international stage.
The team consists of 27 students, and preparing for an international competition comes with significant costs.

The school is currently raising funds to help cover expenses including accommodation, transportation, uniforms, Colour Guard equipment, competition registration fees, food, travel insurance and other related costs. However, the flight expenses will be covered by the students themselves.

We recognise that opportunities like this can play an important role in a young person’s development. It is not only about competing or winning; it is about giving our students the opportunity to learn, grow, build confidence and represent Sabah and Malaysia to the best of their ability. In addition, their participation can help strengthen their co-curricular record, which may be beneficial when they apply for university in the future.

We are glad to support initiatives that give our young people meaningful opportunities to develop their talents and broaden their experiences.

We wish the SMJK Shan Tao Marching Band every success as they prepare to represent their school, Sabah and Malaysia on the international stage. Empowering our young people, developing their talents and building a better future for Sabah.

Meeting with Sabah Literacy Circle (SLC) Sabah Literary Circle

A meaningful meeting with Sabah Literary Circle (SLC), an initiative established through a partnership between Borneo History and the Sabah State Library.

Our discussion centred on an important question: How do we preserve Sabah’s history, literature and stories, and make sure they remain accessible to our future generations?

Sabah has a rich literary and historical heritage, from historical and colonial-era writings to contemporary works by local authors. Yet much of this heritage remains underexplored and deserves greater public awareness, discussion and preservation. The Sabah Literary Circle aims to help change this by creating a platform that brings together literature, history and the community.

Sabah Literacy Circle objectives:

1. To promote awareness and appreciation of literature connected to Sabah and Borneo, including historical texts, colonial-era writings, and contemporary works by local authors;

2. To organise public programmes — discussions, readings, and lectures — that bring this literature into meaningful conversation with present-day audiences;

3. To support the documentation and publication of literary and historical materials pertaining to the region; and

4. To cultivate a culture of reading, critical thinking, and intellectual discourse among the people of Sabah.

During our meeting, we also discussed efforts to make relevant books and materials, including works by Dr Shari Jeffri, more accessible through the library so that members of the public can learn more about Sabah’s history and heritage.

SLC is seeking support for two main areas: programmes and events, including literary talks, public discussions, readings, venues, speakers and outreach; and publications and printed materials, including curated reading materials, documentation and future publications arising from its programmes.

We are pleased to support this initiative and its efforts to promote greater awareness and appreciation of Sabah’s history and literature for Sabahans as well as people from all around the world. Moreover, we would like to contribute in some small ways to the creation of something that has long term effect.
Preserving our history is not simply about looking back. It is about helping the next generation understand our roots, the stories that shaped Sabah, and the identity we carry forward.

We are encouraged to see initiatives that create more opportunities for Sabahans to read, learn, discuss and engage meaningfully with our own history and literature.

When we preserve our stories, we preserve a part of Sabah for the generations that come after us.

Meeting with All Saints' & St Agnes' Schools Alumni Associan of Kota Kinabalu.

We had a meaningful meeting at our Service Centre with the All Saints’ & St Agnes’ Schools Alumni Association Kota Kinabalu.
During the meeting, we had the opportunity to hear about some of the challenges faced by the school. For decades, these classrooms have served generations of students.

However, after many years of continuous use, a number of facilities have deteriorated and are now in need of refurbishment and modernisation in order to create a safer, more comfortable and conducive learning environment for students and teachers.

We also discussed the proposed All Saints’ School Classroom Refurbishment Programme. With the support and endorsement of the School Administration, School Board of Management and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), the All Saints’ & St Agnes’ Schools Alumni Association has initiated this programme to progressively refurbish and upgrade selected classrooms within the school.

During our discussion, we were informed that six classrooms have been identified as being among those in the worst condition and in need of priority attention, with some of these classroom conditions having been a concern for approximately 6–7 years.

The proposal highlighted several existing issues, including damaged flooring and uneven surfaces, crack lines, a damaged beam, broken air-conditioning units and broken curtain railings.

The refurbishment programme aims to go beyond basic repairs. The proposed works include upgrading the ceilings, flooring, windows, doors, lighting, electrical facilities and ventilation, together with new student desks, chairs and whiteboards. The proposal also includes optional improvements such as air-conditioning and smart classroom facilities.
With the first phase estimated at approximately RM1 million, the Alumni Association is seeking support from alumni, organisations and friends of the school to help make this refurbishment possible.

We are glad to support this meaningful initiative, which aligns with our commitment to supporting community initiatives that can create lasting impact for our community and a better future for Sabah.

A better classroom is more than just a better building. It provides our students with a safer, more comfortable and conducive environment to learn, grow and prepare for their future.

We look forward to seeing these classrooms given a new life for the next generation of students.

Meeting with Supernova Rhythmic Gymnastics Club Supernova RG Club.

We had a very inspiring meeting with Supernova Rhythmic Gymnastics Club, together with the young gymnasts and their mothers. We are incredibly proud to see these young Sabah athletes taking a big leap forward by stepping onto the international stage at the Taiwan International Rising Star Cup 2026.

Three young gymnasts – Trisha Chan Yue Ern, Duvan Fay Sagidon and Cayra Leia Wong Xin Ru, have been selected to represent Supernova Rhythmic Gymnastics Club at the competition in Taiwan.

For these young athletes, participating internationally is more than just another competition. It is an opportunity to experience a higher level of competition, develop their technical and artistic abilities, build confidence and learn alongside athletes from outside Malaysia. We are happy to support their journey and hope that this opportunity will encourage them to continue pursuing their passion and reaching even greater exposure and confidence.

Our discussion also highlighted a bigger challenge facing rhythmic gymnastics in Sabah. There are currently limited competition opportunities locally, while access to a suitable and consistent training venue remains a challenge for the club. The gymnasts currently train four times a week, at the rented court in Likas complex. For a sport that requires consistent training, space and specialised routines, having access to an appropriate training environment is important for these young athletes to continue developing.

Moving forward, we hope to explore ways to help. One immediate step is to explore whether a suitable school hall, could be made available for rental so that the girls have a more consistent place to practise.
We also discussed the longer-term aspiration of fundraising towards a multipurpose training facility that could provide rhythmic gymnasts and other young athletes with a proper space to train and develop.
Beyond facilities, we would also like to explore how Sabah can create more opportunities for competition locally.

One possibility discussed is making use of venues such as SICC to host future competitions and potentially attract international participants to Sabah.

Our young athletes should not have to leave Sabah every time they want greater competitive exposure. We hope that one day, Sabah can also become a place where athletes from other countries come to compete.

To Trisha, Duvan and Cayra; we are proud of you for having the courage to take this big step. Keep training, keep learning and give your very best in Taiwan!

Supporting our young athletes is not only about supporting one competition. It is about building an environment in Sabah where their talent has the space and opportunity to grow.

Meeting with Persatuan Panitia Bahasa Cina Sekolah-Sekolah Menengah Sabah. 沙巴州中学华文教师联谊会

We had a purposeful meeting with Persatuan Panitia Bahasa Cina Sekolah-Sekolah Menengah Sabah (沙巴州中学华文教师联谊会).
During our discussion, we learned more about their upcoming Program Strategi Mentaksir Soalan, Teknik Mengolah Jawapan: Ke Arah Kecemerlangan Bahasa Cina SPM Tahun 2026, jointly organised with the Unit Bahasa, Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Sabah.

The programme is designed to support 2026 SPM students taking Bahasa Cina, particularly students from secondary schools in the Kota Kinabalu and Penampang districts.
Through this 2026 SPM Chinese Language Programme, students will be guided on strategies for understanding and assessing examination questions, as well as techniques for structuring and developing effective answers towards excellence. The goal is to help improve students’ performance in SPM Bahasa Cina while building greater confidence as they prepare for their examination.

The programme is expected to involve approximately 300 students and teachers, with an estimated expenditure of food and refreshments. The Association has therefore reached out for financial support to help make this programme possible.

We are pleased to support initiatives that invest directly in the education and development of our young people. Helping students prepare well for an important examination is not only about achieving better results, it is also about giving them greater confidence and opportunities as they move into the next stage in life.

Every effort we make to strengthen education today is an investment in the future of Sabah. Thank you, Persatuan Panitia Bahasa Cina Sekolah-Sekolah Menengah Sabah for sharing this initiative with us, and we wish all participating students and teachers a meaningful and successful programme.

Meeting with Persatuan Ibu Bapa & Guru (PIBG) Sekolah Kebangsaan Inanam Laut.

During our discussion, we had the opportunity to learn more about their upcoming SKIL Uniform Camp 2026, a State-Level Uniformed Unit Camp organised by the Co-Curricular Unit of SK Inanam Laut.

The two-day programme will be held on 14 &15 August 2026 at SK Inanam Laut, bringing together 170 students from nine schools, including schools from outside the Kota Kinabalu district.

More than just a camping programme, this initiative is designed to develop students in areas such as leadership, teamwork, discipline, character, communication, problem-solving, and physical, mental and emotional resilience.
Throughout the camp, students will take part in practical activities including knot-tying skills, tent and campsite management, marching, basic first aid, cultural activities and an Explore Race. These activities give students the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge and skills they have learned through their uniformed units.

Importantly, participation in this programme will also be recorded in the students’ PAJSK as district/state-level participation, helping them strengthen their co-curricular achievement and obtain the points needed as part of their overall school development.

This is one of the reasons we see value in supporting this initiative. Education is not limited to what students learn inside the classroom. Programmes like this provide opportunities for them to develop leadership, discipline, confidence and teamwork while strengthening their co-curricular records.
We are glad to support SK Inanam Laut and its PIBG in creating more meaningful opportunities for our young people to grow and develop.

Meeting with JCI Kota Kinabalu JCI Kota Kinabalu:

We had the opportunity to meet with Junior Chamber International (JCI) Kota Kinabalu to learn more about their upcoming community initiative, “Pulse for Life” Adopt An AED: CPR & Life-Saving Community Movement.

The initiative, jointly organised by JCI Kota Kinabalu and Lions Club Kota Kinabalu Vintage, aims to build safer and more resilient communities by increasing access to Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) while equipping members of the public, especially young people, with the knowledge and confidence to respond during cardiac emergencies.
During our discussion, JCI Kota Kinabalu shared their plans to install AED machines within the community alongside CPR and AED awareness programmes. The initiative recognises that cardiac emergencies can happen unexpectedly, and that timely CPR and access to an AED can make a critical difference.

What we appreciate about Pulse for Life is that it goes beyond simply placing AED machines in the community. It also focuses on education and empowerment, giving ordinary members of the public the knowledge and confidence to respond when a life is at risk. A safer community is built when people are prepared to help one another.

This initiative also contributes towards several Sustainable Development Goals, including

SDG 3: Good Health & Well-Being,
SDG 4: Quality Education,
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities & Communities and
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

We are encouraged to see young leaders taking initiative to address real community needs and creating practical solutions that can have a lasting impact.

Meeting with Junior Chamber International (JCI Tanjung Aru) JCI Tanjung Aru 丹容亚路国际青年商会 for a meaningful discussion on youth development, sustainable development and their upcoming initiatives towards the JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award (SDA) 2027 Bidding Project.

During the meeting, JCI Tanjung Aru shared their vision to bring the 2027 JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Awards to Sabah, creating a platform that connects young leaders, entrepreneurs, organisations and different sectors of the community. The proposed initiative also aims to showcase Sabah’s culture and tourism while creating opportunities for local economic development.

Sustainable development is not only about environmental protection; it also involves economic growth, social development, innovation, community empowerment and creating opportunities that can benefit future generations. For Sabah, with its rich natural resources, unique culture, tourism potential and diverse communities, there is tremendous potential for sustainable development projects that can create meaningful social and economic impact.

In fact, when young people are equipped with the knowledge and skills to identify challenges and develop sustainable solutions, they can turn ideas into initiatives that benefit not only their communities, but also contribute to Sabah's future development.

This as well resonates with our vision as we believe young people should also be given the space and guidance to discover what they are truly passionate about, their gifts and how they can use their abilities to contribute meaningfully to society. Youth development is more than preparing young people for employment. It is about helping them discover their purpose, strengths, interests and potential, while giving them opportunities to turn those passions into meaningful contributions within their communities.

JCI Tanjung Aru’s initiative reflects this spirit. Their SDA 2027 bid aims to create more leadership and development opportunities so that they will be empowered to discover their passion, develop their leadership capacity and becoming contributors, innovators and change-makers in the future.

Our Service Centre is encouraged by JCI Tanjung Aru’s commitment to youth leadership, community development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and we look forward to seeing how we can continue to support and collaborate with young people and organisations that are committed to creating positive social impact.

Supporting “Wheels of Love” – Bringing Mobility, Dignity & Hope to Our Community 🦽❤️

We were pleased to meet with representatives of JCI Malaysia Senate 马来西亚国际青商参议院 to learn more about the upcoming “Wheels of Love” fundraising initiative — a meaningful community project dedicated to bringing greater mobility, dignity and independence to those in need.

🦽 Wheels of Love is jointly organised by JCI Malaysia Senate 马来西亚国际青商参议院, JCI Kota Kinabalu and Lions Club Luyang Ace in aid of Sabah Cheshire Homes & Services.

The initiative aims to raise funds to provide wheelchairs to persons with disabilities (OKU) and senior citizens who require mobility assistance, while also helping to ease the responsibilities of their caregivers.
A wheelchair is more than a means of transportation. For someone with limited mobility, it can provide greater independence, improve access to everyday activities and restore a sense of dignity and confidence.
We commend the organisers and volunteers behind this initiative for turning compassion into meaningful community action.

As we celebrate the spirit of Merdeka, let us remember that patriotism is not only about celebrating our nation — it is also about caring for one another, strengthening our communities and ensuring that no one is left behind. 🇲🇾
