Swallow Reef, Layang Layang is an oceanic atoll of the Spratly Islands. It is administered by Malaysi

a, and situated 300 kilometres+ (190 mi) northwest of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The atoll is about 7 km long and 2 km wide with a central lagoon. It had an original land area of approximately 6.2 hectares (15 acres). Malaysia has a naval base on the reef since 1983 and an airfield which can operate passenger jets and Hercules C130s transports. As with all of the Spratly Islands, the ownership is disputed; it is also claimed by China, Taiwan and Vietnam. The reef is a scuba diver's paradise. Layang Layang is especially known for the hammerhead sharks during the May mating season. Schools of dolphins also reside here as well. Unfortunately in recent years sightings of the big schools have been elusive in recent times due to overfishing. There is only one resort on the island. This page is not affiliated with it. Visibility underwater is 50 to 100m. The fish ad coral life here is healthy, it's a great place to free dive too.
