A welcoming dinner reception was held this evening at Ormond Hotel, Sandakan, in conjunction with the Sandakan Day Memorial 2026. Hosted by the Sandakan Municipal Council, the reception brought together dignitaries, international representatives, families and relatives of prisoners of war, and invited guests ahead of tomorrow’s solemn memorial service.

The evening was graced by YB Datuk Ceasar Mandela Malakun, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister of Sabah, representing the Chief Minister of Sabah, as Guest of Honour.

Also in attendance were YB Dr. Andi MD Shamsureezal bin Mohd Sainal, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah; Her Excellency Ms. Danielle Heinecke, Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia; His Excellency Mr. Ajay Sharma CMG, British High Commissioner to Malaysia; His Excellency Mr. Michael Wehi Mailetonga Walsh, New Zealand High Commissioner to Malaysia; Mr. David H. Gamble Jr., Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Malaysia; Ms. Sarah Kennedy, Assistant Secretary, Department of Veterans’ Affairs; Mr. Farizal Setoh, Deputy President, representing the President of the Sandakan Municipal Council; and Ms. Josephine Chai, Chief Marketing Officer, representing the CEO of Sabah Tourism Board.

The presence of the families and relatives of the prisoners of war gave particular significance to the evening, reflecting how the history of Sandakan continues to be carried through generations by those whose families were forever connected to the events that unfolded here more than eight decades ago.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Farizal reflected on the importance of honouring those who lost their lives and the families who have carried their memories across generations. He also highlighted Sandakan as a destination where history, nature, culture and warm hospitality come together, while expressing hope that remembrance would continue to strengthen friendship and understanding among communities and nations.

In his address, YB Datuk Ceasar Mandela Malakun acknowledged the deeply personal journeys undertaken by descendants who had travelled from afar to Sandakan, many carrying memories, photographs, letters and stories preserved within their families for generations.

He paid tribute to the Allied prisoners of war who suffered and perished during the Sandakan tragedy, as well as to the courage and compassion of local people who risked their own safety to assist those in need. He emphasised that behind every historical record and number was a person who was known and loved, and that preserving these stories ensures the history of Sandakan continues to be remembered with accuracy, dignity and humanity.

Tomorrow, 15 August 2026, the Sandakan Day Memorial Service will be held at Sandakan Memorial Park at 7:00 AM, commemorating the Allied prisoners of war who perished during the tragic Sandakan Death Marches of World War II.

Members of the public are invited to attend and pay tribute to their courage, sacrifice and memory.

Last Saturday, July 25th, marked the official flag-off of the 14th annual Coalition Duchenne Expedition Mt Kinabalu at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort.

This powerful annual climb raises important global awareness for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a rare genetic disorder that primarily affects boys. Over the past 14 years, the expedition has united more than 700 climbers from around the globe in a shared mission of hope.

The welcoming speech by YB Datuk Jafry Ariffin, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah, was delivered on his behalf by Mr Julinus Jeffery Jimit, CEO of the Sabah Tourism Board, who flagged off the expedition.

Sabah is proud to host a positive movement that fosters human connections, promoting cross-cultural understanding, and driving meaningful change within local and international communities.

Founded in 2011 by Sabahan, Catherine Jayasuriya and her son Dusty Brandom, Coalition Duchenne is a US-based non-profit dedicated to funding research and accelerating access to treatments for Duchenne. What began as Catherine’s vision in 2010, has grown into a powerful movement integrating adventure with rare disease advocacy across the Asia-Pacific region.

We wish them a successful and smooth expedition!
