BEM INTRODUCES NEW ACCREDITATION FRAMEWORK FOR COMPUTING AND IT-FOCUSED ENGINEERING PROGRAMMES
The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), through the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC), is due to conduct its first accreditation under the framework for engineering programmes focused on Computing and Information Technology (IT), creating a new route for eligible programmes to be recognised within Malaysia’s engineering accreditation framework.
Introduced under Addendum B (1), Accreditation of Engineering Programmes with a Focus on Computing and Information Technology (IT), the initiative responds to the growing convergence of engineering and digital technologies. Eligible programmes, including Software Engineering, will be evaluated based on engineering knowledge, skills, competencies and learning outcomes.
The move comes as computing and digital technologies become increasingly integral to engineering practice, from design and analysis to system development and digital solutions for complex engineering challenges. It reflects the changing profile of engineering graduates, who are increasingly expected to combine engineering fundamentals with digital capabilities.
For graduates, accreditation provides a potential route to register with BEM as Graduate Engineers, subject to the applicable requirements, with opportunities to progress towards registration as Professional Engineers and Professional Engineers with Practising Certificates upon fulfilling the relevant requirements.
The initiative is also aligned with international practices in the United States and Australia, where certain programmes combining computing with engineering fundamentals are assessed under engineering accreditation frameworks.
The framework is voluntary and application-based. Accreditation of engineering programmes is undertaken by the EAC at the request of the IHL. Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) will be able to submit eligible programmes for assessment.
Through this initiative, BEM aims to ensure that engineering education keeps pace with technological change while maintaining the professional standards and competencies expected of the engineering profession.
