NCCIM APPOINTS DPMM PRESIDENT AS NEW PRESIDENT, MARKING A NEW CHAPTER FOLLOWING 50TH AGM

KUALA LUMPUR, 27 July 2026 – The National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Tuan Norsyahrin bin Hamidon, President of the Dewan Perniagaan Melayu Malaysia (DPMM), as the new President of NCCIM for the 2026–2028 term.

The appointment was made following the conclusion of NCCIM's 50th Annual General Meeting (AGM), a significant milestone in the history of the organisation. The Golden Jubilee AGM marked not only NCCIM's 50th AGM but also celebrated the organisation's long-standing contribution to Malaysia's business community
throughout its 64-year journey since its establishment in 1962.

The 50th AGM held on Saturday, 25th July 2026 was officiated by YB Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani Minister Investment Trade and Industry (MITI).

The new appointment reflects NCCIM's established practice of leadership rotation among its five constituent chambers, namely DPMM, the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM), the Malaysian Associated Indian
Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (MAICCI), the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI), and the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturing (FMM).

The rotational arrangement underscores NCCIM's commitment to collective leadership, inclusiveness and consensus, ensuring that the diverse perspectives of Malaysia's business community are represented at the highest level of the organisation. Under NCCIM's structure, the President is drawn from among the presidents of its constituent chambers, while the presidents of the other constituent
chambers serve as Vice Presidents, reinforcing the spirit of shared responsibility and unity.

NCCIM congratulates Tn Norsyahrin Hamidon on the appointment and looks forward to his leadership in advancing NCCIM's role as the collective voice of Malaysia's business community. His leadership will build upon the strong foundation established by previous Presidents and further strengthen NCCIM's engagement with the Government, industry stakeholders and the wider business community.

NCCIM also expresses its appreciation to the outgoing President, Dato’ Seri N.Gobalakrishnan, for his leadership and contributions during his tenure. NCCIM acknowledges his efforts in strengthening the organisation's role as a platform for constructive engagement between the business community and the Government, as well as in advancing initiatives that support Malaysia's economic development and competitiveness.

The 50th AGM represents an important milestone in NCCIM's history and provides an opportunity to reflect on the organisation's achievements while looking ahead to the challenges and opportunities facing Malaysia's economy. As NCCIM enters its next chapter under the leadership of DPMM, it remains committed to working collectively with all five constituent chambers to promote a resilient, competitive and inclusive business environment.

NCCIM will continue to serve as a unified platform for the Malaysian business community, advocating policies and initiatives that support sustainable economic growth, strengthen business competitiveness and contribute to the nation's long-term prosperity.

National Economic Forum (NEF) 2026

Kuala Lumpur, 2 July 2026 – The National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM) successfully organised the National Economic Forum (NEF) 2026 at the KLGCC Convention Centre, bringing together nearly 600 policymakers, business leaders, diplomats, academics and industry stakeholders. Held under the theme, "A World in Transition: Securing Malaysia's Economic Future in an Era of Disruption," the forum served as a platform for dialogue on strengthening Malaysia's resilience and competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global economy.

The forum was officially opened by YB Liew Chin Tong, Deputy Minister of Finance, who delivered the keynote address on strengthening Malaysia's resilience, confidence and competitiveness amid global economic transformation.

In his welcoming remarks, Dato' Seri N. Gobalakrishnan, President of NCCIM, emphasised the importance of close collaboration between the Government and the private sector to ensure Malaysia remains competitive and future-ready. Datuk Dr. A.T. Kumararajah, Organising Chairman of NEF 2026, expressed his appreciation to all speakers, partners, sponsors and participants for their support in making the forum a success.

NEF 2026 reaffirmed NCCIM's commitment to fostering meaningful public-private dialogue and advancing practical solutions that will strengthen Malaysia's economic resilience, competitiveness and sustainable growth.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia needs to develop alternative financing models that rely less on physical collateral and better support technology-based businesses, says Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Seri Liew Chin Tong.

He said discussions were ongoing with Syarikat Jaminan Pembiayaan Perniagaan (SJPP), Credit Guarantee Corporation (CGC) and Bank Negara Malaysia on new financing approaches, although the matter remained at an early stage.

"We are still very early in the discussion stage but nonetheless we welcome new ideas and possibilities to move away from these physical collateral requirements.

The forum, organised by the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM), carried the theme A World in Transition: Securing Malaysia's Economic Future in an Era of Disruption.

It drew nearly 600 participants, including business leaders, policymakers, diplomats, economists, academics, investors and industry representatives.

Liew's keynote address, titled Securing Malaysia's Future in a World in Transition: Strengthening Resilience, Confidence and Competitiveness, set the tone for discussions on Malaysia's long-term economic priorities amid global uncertainty.

The forum also featured a keynote presentation by Malaysian Inclusive Development and Advancement Institute (Minda) director Professor Tan Sri Dr Noor Azlan Ghazali, alongside three plenary sessions covering institutional resilience, workforce readiness, geopolitical developments, trade realignment, investment competitiveness and innovation.

Liew said industry proposals to strengthen non-traditional credit assessment would be welcomed.

"If there are suggestions on improving alternative borrowing and credit reporting, we are happy to study them because this is an area we are actively working on," he said.

Responding to a question on intellectual property (IP)-based financing, he said Malaysia must move beyond conventional collateral-backed lending.

"There is a need to shift away from purely collateral-based lending towards financing models that recognise intellectual property and innovation," he added.

Liew said that Malaysia must also strengthen its private equity and venture capital ecosystem to support technology firms. "In more technologically advanced economies, venture capital plays an important role in financing innovation," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must increase women's participation in the workforce if it hopes to accelerate income growth and achieve high-income nation status, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Seri Liew Chin Tong said today.

Citing the latest figures released by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Liew said women now make up almost 60 per cent of Malaysia's civil service, with about 43 per cent holding leadership positions among the highest rates globally for a Muslim-majority country.

However, he said female labour force participation in the broader economy remained comparatively low, representing one of Malaysia's biggest untapped opportunities for economic growth.

"For a Muslim-majority nation, these are very high numbers. But when we compare them with female labour force participation, especially with our regional neighbours, there is still a considerable gap that we need to address," he said.

Liew called on the private sector, particularly business chambers, to take the lead in creating workplaces that encourage more women to enter and remain in formal employment.

"The quickest way to raise household income is to have two income earners instead of one. We need to find ways to ensure more Malaysian women participate in the workforce and remain in the formal economy longer."

He cited Japan as an example, saying its higher female labour force participation over the past 15 years had contributed significantly to the country's economic expansion.

Liew delivered the opening keynote address at the sixth National Economic Forum (NEF 2026), organised by the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM) at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club Convention Centre.

Held under the theme, A World in Transition: Securing Malaysia's Economic Future in an Era of Disruption, the forum attracted nearly 600 participants, including business leaders, policymakers, government officials, diplomats, economists, academics, investors and industry representatives from across the country.

His keynote address, titled Securing Malaysia's Future in a World in Transition: Strengthening Resilience, Confidence and Competitiveness, set the tone for discussions on Malaysia's long-term economic priorities amid an increasingly uncertain global landscape.

The forum also featured a keynote presentation by Malaysian Inclusive Development and Advancement Institute (Minda) director Professor Tan Sri Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azlan Ghazali, alongside three plenary sessions covering institutional resilience, workforce readiness, geopolitical developments, trade realignment, investment competitiveness and innovation.

Responding to questions from participants after his speech, Liew said Malaysia must place greater emphasis on ensuring foreign direct investment (FDI) generates tangible benefits for local businesses and workers instead of focusing solely on attracting investment commitments.

He said the government's new investment incentive framework, introduced on March 1, aims to evaluate investments based on measurable outcomes, including technology transfer, quality employment, local supply chain participation and the development of Malaysian companies.

"For many years, we focused on attracting investment. Going forward, we must also nurture these investments and monitor whether they create value for Malaysian companies, Malaysian workers and the broader economy," he said.

Liew said foreign investment should not be viewed as an end in itself but as a catalyst for developing stronger Malaysian enterprises, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and future multinational corporations.

Now in its sixth edition, the National Economic Forum has become NCCIM's flagship annual platform for dialogue between the government and the private sector, bringing together policymakers and industry leaders to deliberate on Malaysia's economic challenges and opportunities, as well as contribute recommendations to national policymaking.
