Reef Check Malaysia

Reef Check Malaysia An organisation committed to healthy oceans. There are some 3,600 km2 of reef around the country, including fringing reefs and offshore islands.

We create impact by partnering with local communities, government agencies and the private sector to protect and conserve marine ecosystems. Malaysia is part of the “Coral Triangle”, the area of the world’s oceans recognized by scientists as having the highest biodiversity. Coral reefs therefore represent an economically important ecosystem and are the foundation of a significant percentage of the

country’s tourist industry. Over 350 species of hard coral have been identified in Malaysian waters. However, a lack of comprehensive management programmes is leading to degradation of this important economic resource. This situation is exacerbated by inadequate information on the status and location of the reefs, further hindering management efforts. In 2001, Reef Check Foundation appointed a National Coordinator for Malaysia, to promote Reef Check and carry out training and surveys. While there were some successes, lack of funding and support prevented the coordinator from having a major impact on marine conservation in Malaysia. In 2006, the British Government provided funding for a one year project to establish a more sustainable Reef Check programme in Malaysia. That project culminated with the registration of Reef Check Malaysia Bhd as a non-profit company in August 2007.

Join the OCEAN Grants Programme for the OCEAN Global Exchange Series 2026, taking place online from 29 September - 1 October.

Over three days, participants will explore how locally led initiatives are advancing marine conservation, sustainable ocean management and poverty alleviation.

Each session will feature project presentations, panel discussions and opportunities to exchange ideas.

The students at SMK Adela continued their Marine Ecosystem Awareness journey!

This time, students get to do an interactive activity that encouraged students to put their knowledge into action.

Working in groups, students developed their own marine awareness campaigns through A2 posters, focusing on marine ecosystems, the importance of protecting them, and the need for greater awareness and care.

Each group then presented their campaign, sharing the key messages behind their posters and what they believe can be done to encourage greater appreciation and protection of marine ecosystems.

Beyond creating posters, the activity gave students a platform to turn what they had learned into messages that can be shared with others, encouraging young voices to play a role in spreading marine conservation awareness.

The Qube Apps Solutions Sdn Bhd team, our Bronze ICC sponsor, showed up with great enthusiasm to make sure Pantai Kelanang is clean. 🧹

This beach cleanup was especially meaningful as the whole team, including the company’s founders, took part in the cleanup! Not only that, they also made individual pledges to protect the environment and become Shoreline Heroes. We applaud their commitment to protecting our environment!

The passionate team cleared 350.3 kg of trash from Pantai Kelanang. The top three items they found were 334 pieces of other plastic bags, 277 pieces of plastic beverage bottles and 222 pieces of cigarette butts. It is a reminder that much of the waste that ends up in our oceans comes from everyday items that can be reduced, avoided or disposed of responsibly.

It’s important for the CMCGs to be equipped with marine conservation skills in order to carry out the work effectively.

The Kunak Darvel Marine Conservation Group were trained to conduct coral bleaching monitoring, Crown-of-thorns starfish (COTs) and ghost nets removal, coral rehabilitation and underwater cleanup.

Similar to the training that Mantanani Marine Conservation Group had, the KDMCG team also went through both classroom sessions and practical training.

The team is now ready to respond to threats to our marine ecosystems and help protect it.

Data collection is just one part of reef monitoring! 🪸💻

Our CMCGs in Sabah recently took part in a Computer Literacy Training session, where they learned how to record the Reef Check data using a computer.

CMCG members from Larapan, Kulapuan, Selakan and Mabul practised entering data in the required format and learned the importance of checking their entries to ensure accuracy.

By strengthening their digital and data management skills, the CMCGs are better equipped to support ongoing reef health monitoring efforts in their communities.

Using real seagrass specimens, the students SK Kampung Baru Pasir Gogok explored seagrass morphology while learning to recognise species found in their local area. The students showed their understanding by drawing, labelling and identifying the species they had observed.

Hands-on learning continued at the school’s tank nursery, where students monitored the cultured Enhalus acoroides seedlings by measuring leaf length as an indicator of growth and recording their observations. They also carried out water quality measurements to assess the conditions supporting healthy seagrass growth.

Thank you to the volunteer representative from Pengerang Independent Terminals Sdn. Bhd. (PITSB) for participating and assisting throughout the session.
