SRDC’s researchers continue to play their key role in advancing research and capacity building through a two-day technical training programme for the SaraCarbon team under the Marudi Peat Swamp Forest Conservation & Restoration Project.

The training, titled “Principles & Practices of Water Level, Peat Subsidence & Rain Gauge Monitoring Systems”, was recently held at Wisma Samling, Miri, bringing together participants to strengthen their knowledge and skills in effective peatland monitoring.

Throughout the programme, participants built a better understanding of how water levels, peat subsidence, and rainfall are connected to peatland condition, carbon storage, and fire risk. They were also exposed to the installation of monitoring equipment, highlighted on the importance of good data practices and given guidance on basic data analysis.

Thank you to the SaraCarbon team and everyone involved for the strong collaboration and commitment in making this programme a success.

This morning, we held the 1st Press Conference of the Sarawak SHInE International Conference 2026: Advancing Science, Health, Innovation and Engineering at the Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute. The event was graced by our Guest of Honour, The Honourable Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Sarawak.

Also present were The Honourable Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, Deputy Minister II for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (Talent Development); Ts. Dr. Peter Morin Nissom, General Manager of the Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC) and Organising Chairman of SHInE 2026; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ivan K. S. Yap, Chief Executive Officer of the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC) and Organising Chairman of SHInE 2026; Dr Faustina Elfrida anak Sangok, representing YBhg. Datu Haji Adana bin Haji Jed, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak; and Madam Anielia anak Siam, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak.

This milestone event marks the official lead-up to SHInE 2026, a multidisciplinary conference that brings together experts, researchers, industry leaders, and innovators to exchange ideas, foster collaboration, and explore solutions across science, health, innovation, and engineering.

The Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC) and its subsidiary, the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC), will organise the Sarawak SHInE International Conference 2026 (Science, Health, Innovation and Engineering) from 9 to 11 September 2026 at Imperial Hotel Kuching. SHInE 2026 carries the theme “Advancing Science, Health, Innovation and Engineering”, and will highlight Sarawak’s commitment to strengthening research excellence, driving innovation, and creating real-world impact across science, technology, engineering, and healthcare.

Over the three days, the conference is expected to attract more than 300 participants, featuring over 30 expert speakers and 30 sessions. Invited speakers will not only come from within Malaysia but also from countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Cambodia, Singapore, and Taiwan. Attendees will hear from leaders across government, academia, and industry, and will have the opportunity to explore an exhibition showcasing the latest innovations and initiatives from over 30 participating organisations.

Another highlight will be the SRDC BrightSparX Programme, which nurtures young talent, alongside the Premier’s BrightSparX Innovation Award, recognising outstanding solutions from emerging innovators.
