PDP National Youth Movement Assistant Secretary Eric Fung said recent remarks and political attacks by SUPP Dudong Branch Chairman Wong Ching Yong appear to be little more than an attempt to manufacture political relevance while deflecting attention from years of unremarkable performance and unresolved local issues.
He stressed that the people do not judge an elected representative merely based on how often they appear publicly, how long they have remained in a constituency, or how visible they are at events. What truly matters is whether they are capable of delivering tangible results, solving long-standing problems, and improving the daily lives of the people.
“Being constantly seen around town does not automatically translate into effectiveness, competence, or achievement. The rakyat are not interested in political theatrics or manufactured visibility. They are interested in outcomes,” he said.
Eric added that when certain individuals continuously emphasise being “long rooted locally” or “always present on the ground”, while attempting to portray such visibility as proof of service and achievement, the public will inevitably begin asking a far more important question - during the many years they previously held influence and representation, what actual transformative development did they bring to Dudong?
“Politics is not about who appears most frequently, who talks the loudest, or who dominates headlines. Politics is ultimately about whether problems are solved, whether development progresses, and whether the people genuinely benefit,” he said.
He further pointed out that Wong’s repeated criticisms regarding representatives attending functions on behalf of elected leaders, or attempts to politicise the absence of certain leaders from specific events, only reflect a shallow understanding of how effective governance and political administration actually function.
“Since when does delegating representatives equate to not working? A mature and effective political team operates through coordination, division of responsibilities, and institutional efficiency. The real issue is whether public complaints are responded to, whether follow-up actions are carried out, and whether the people’s concerns are ultimately resolved,” he said.
Eric added that based on Wong’s logic, a person who appears publicly every single day, continuously issues political statements, and remains physically present in the constituency, while long-standing issues remain unresolved for decades, could somehow still be considered an effective representative.
“That is precisely the kind of outdated political mentality the people are increasingly rejecting,” he said.
He stressed that since taking office, the current elected representative has actively pushed forward various infrastructure and people-centric improvement initiatives involving flood mitigation, drainage systems, road connectivity, public amenities, and broader local development planning, while maintaining continuous engagement and coordination with the relevant authorities.
“Many long-neglected issues affecting Dudong and the wider Sibu area are now finally being brought onto the agenda and gradually entering stages of implementation and improvement,” he said.
Eric also noted that many structural and developmental issues affecting Sibu today did not emerge overnight, nor can they realistically be resolved within a single term.
“What matters most is whether there is sincerity to confront these issues seriously, consistency in pushing for solutions, and the ability to secure coordination, resources, and policy support necessary to move development forward,” he added.
He said the people are far more concerned about whether roads improve, drainage issues are resolved, flood mitigation progresses, economic opportunities expand, and overall quality of life improves, rather than endless political narratives about who appears more frequently or who claims to have been around the longest.
“Therefore, if Wong Ching Yong wishes to continue criticising others, he must also be prepared to answer the people’s most direct question: during the years his side previously held influence and representation, what truly impactful and lasting development did they actually deliver for Dudong that the people can clearly see and feel today?” he said.
“Because at the end of the day, politics cannot deceive the people forever. Whether someone has genuinely served the rakyat is something the people themselves can judge very clearly.”
