The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) is one of Sarawakโ€™s leading state government agencies in research and development (R&D). SBC is established under the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre Ordinance and is committed to documentation of Traditional Knowledge among the indigenous communities of Sarawak and implementation of a R&D/Biodiscovery programme to discover novel therapeutic/useful compounds from

Sarawakโ€™s unique biodiversity. As stipulated in the Sarawak Biodiversity Ordinance 1997, Sarawak Biodiversity Regulations 1998 and Sarawak Biodiversity (Amendment) Ordinance 2003 and Sarawak Biodiversity (Amendment) Ordinance 2014, SBC carries out the following core functions:

- implementing bioprospecting programmes on the State's indigenous biodiversity
- facilitating the documentation of Traditional Knowledge on communities' management and utilization of biodiversity
- propagating Sarawak's indigenous plants for conservation and appreciation
maintaining biodiversity related databases
- conducting biodiversity-biotechnology awareness and appreciation programmes
- regulating biodiversity-related research with commercial potential in Sarawak through the Research Permit System
- networking with organizations with similar interests

Look what we spotted in the forest! ๐Ÿ„

โ€‹This fascinating find is commonly known as a Stinkhorn Mushroom, but because of its unique look, some people call it a "Witch's Skirt".

โ€‹You can easily see where it gets that spooky nickname. It has a beautiful, delicate white net that drops down from the cap, looking just like a tattered, lacy skirt. A less ominous name that is is known as is "Bridal Veil" Mushroom.

โ€‹But be careful if you get closeโ€”itโ€™s called a "stinkhorn" for a very good reason! The greenish-brown top is covered in a sticky slime that smells quite bad.

โ€‹While people might want to plug their noses, flies and other insects absolutely love the stinkhorn's smell! They land on the cap to feed on the slime and end up helping the mushroom spread its spores around the jungle. It's a clever trick of nature!

On 25th May 2026, we held a discussion with Mr. Akihiko Kushioka, Managing Director of Tokyo Byokane (S) Pte Ltd., and Mr. Yusuke Hoshi, Marketing Manager of Byokane (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., both overseas affiliated companies and subsidiaries of the Japanese industrial fastener manufacturer TOKYO BYOKANE CO., LTD., which intends to expand its business operations into Sarawak.

Established in 1941, TOKYO BYOKANE CO., LTD. is involved in the manufacturing, sales, and trading of industrial parts, including automotive, office equipment and electronics components, high-quality precision equipment, as well as fasteners of various sizes ranging from world-class JCIS standard products to customised parts.

Tokyo Byokane (S) Pte Ltd., based in Singapore, was established to support the wider ASEAN supply chain and distribution network. Meanwhile, Byokane (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., established in 2012 and operating from Petaling Jaya, Selangor, serves Malaysiaโ€™s growing manufacturing and electronics industries.

The discussion focused on potential business expansion opportunities and future collaborations in supporting Sarawakโ€™s industrial and manufacturing ecosystem.

On 22nd May 2026, we received a courtesy visit from Mr Riki Mochida, Deputy Department Head of the Administration Department, and Ms Shafura Ariff, Assistant Manager of the Human Resource and Administration Department, Mitsubishi Corporation Kuala Lumpur Branch.

The visit provided an opportunity to explore potential corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in sustainable nature conservation. Mitsubishi Corporation had previously collaborated with SBC in 2012 on the establishment of a microalgae collection from various ecosystems across Sarawak.

We extend our appreciation to Mr Riki and Ms Shafura for their visit and look forward to future collaboration.
