NOTICE TO RESIDENTS OF KAMPUNG PORTUGIS
Dear Residents of Kampung Portugis,
We wish to officially inform everyone that due to the recent change in government administration, the current JPKK Kampung Portugis will be stepping down from our positions with effect from 31 July 2026.
As we come to the end of our tenure, we would like to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to all residents, volunteers, supporters, and stakeholders who have stood with us and supported our efforts over the past 32 months. It has been our honour and privilege to serve the Kampung Portugis community, and we are truly thankful for the trust, cooperation, and encouragement given to us throughout this journey.
We would also like to place on record that the current JPKK has fulfilled all financial responsibilities undertaken during our term. All workers' salaries under the responsibility of the current JPKK have been fully paid up to July 2026, while all rental payments, quit rent (cukai tanah), and assessment payments (cukai pintu) involving the MBMB areas under our responsibility have been fully settled up to the end of 2026. There are no outstanding arrears or unpaid commitments left by the current JPKK.
Regarding the utility payments for the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, Kampung Portugis, we have officially written to Rev. Fr. Lionel to inform him that, following our resignation, the current JPKK will no longer be able to continue managing and paying for the chapel's electricity bills, water bills, and related expenses from August 2026 onwards. The final payments under our responsibility have been settled up to July 2026 to ensure a smooth transition.
During our tenure, one of our key missions was to work towards having Festa San Pedro recognised as a Warisan (Heritage) event. We wish to assure all residents that although our term has ended, we will continue to follow up and pursue this matter until we see positive results for our beloved Kampung Portugis community.
Likewise, our commitment to fight for the future of Kampung Portugis residents remains unchanged. We will continue to support efforts towards securing a longer land lease extension of 99 years, or, if possible, an even better outcome such as freehold status, for the benefit and security of future generations.
To ensure these efforts continue beyond our tenure as JPKK, we are pleased to share that we have successfully registered the Persatuan Kebajikan Penduduk Perkampungan Portugis Melaka. Moving forward, many of our community initiatives and advocacy efforts will be carried out through this residents' association, with the aim of safeguarding the best interests of the Portuguese Settlement community. The association will soon hold its first committee meeting to determine its priorities and future plans. We warmly encourage all residents to become members when registration opens, and we look forward to your continued support. Please be assured that, although our roles in the JPKK have come to an end, our commitment to the welfare and future of Kampung Portugis remains as strong as ever.
We sincerely apologise if, throughout our tenure, any of our decisions or actions may have unintentionally caused hurt, misunderstanding, or disappointment to anyone. We have always carried out our responsibilities with the best intentions and with the interests of the community at heart.
As we hand over this responsibility, we sincerely hope and pray that the next JPKK team will continue the good work, uphold transparency, listen to the voices of residents, and serve the community with dedication, commitment, and integrity. We hope they will continue to give their best, and even more, for the progress and unity of Kampung Portugis.
Once again, thank you to everyone who has supported us, worked alongside us, and believed in our efforts. It has been a privilege to serve this community, and although our chapter as the current JPKK comes to an end, our service to Kampung Portugis does not. We remain committed to working alongside the community through the Persatuan Kebajikan Penduduk Perkampungan Portugis Melaka and look forward to continuing our efforts for the benefit of present and future generations.
With sincere appreciation,
JPKK Kampung Portugis Committee
