VICE CHANCELLOR VISITS THE LAST DAY OF THE MASTER TEACHER TRAINER (MTT) PROGRAMME WITH TABLET ACADEMY UNITED KINGDOM

40 UTHM Academics Successfully Complete the UNESCO Global Skills Academy (GSA) Training

Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) marked another significant milestone in advancing digital and AI driven teaching competencies with the successful completion of the Master Teacher Trainer (MTT) Programme under the UNESCO Global Skills Academy (GSA). The final day of training, held at the Collaborative Virtual Learning (CVL) Centre, was visited by the Vice Chancellor of UTHM, Professor Dr. Mas Fawzi Mohd Ali, underscoring the institution’s strong commitment to digital empowerment and international collaboration.

A total of 40 academic staff from various faculties successfully completed the intensive two day, in person training, delivered in two cohorts by experts from Tablet Academy United Kingdom, Mr. Ross Hunter and Ms. Samantha O’Leary. The sessions, conducted over four hours each day, offered a highly interactive and hands-on learning experience, with a key focus on AI enhanced pedagogy and effective Copilot prompting strategies to support future focused teaching practices.

The training formed a crucial component of UTHM’s Phase 1 implementation under the UNESCO GSA initiative, following the earlier Digital Skills Review (DSR) briefing and institutional engagement held on 23 February 2026. Over the two days, participants engaged in collaborative activities, real world AI use cases, and guided exercises designed to strengthen digital competencies aligned with global education standards.

During his visit on the last day of the training, the Vice Chancellor highlighted the importance of strengthening TVET focused practical teaching, noting that UTHM’s academic delivery must continue to emphasise hands-on, real world learning experiences for students. He commended the dedication and active participation demonstrated by the academic staff throughout the training and expressed confidence that the newly certified Master Teacher Trainers will play a significant role in elevating AI informed teaching practices across the university.

Representatives from the UNESCO Chair and UNEVOC Centre at UTHM—including Prof. Emeritus Dr. Jailani bin Md Yunos, Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair for TVET Educators; Prof. Badaruddin bin Ibrahim, Director of MyRIVET; Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Lai Chee Sern, Deputy Director of MyRIVET; Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Affero Ismail, Project Lead I and Manager of the UTHM UNEVOC Centre; and Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. D’oria Islamiah Rosli, Director of the Collaborative Virtual Learning (CVL) Centre—were also present to witness the culmination of the training. Their presence signified strong institutional support for digital capacity building initiatives.

With Phase 2 now underway, the newly certified MTT cohort is expected to champion the integration of ethical AI use, AI‑informed instructional design, digital tools for personalised learning, and scalable training models for academic staff development within UTHM and beyond. Their role will be instrumental in supporting the wider GSA Learning Pathway toward institution‑wide digital transformation.

The successful completion of the MTT training represents a major step forward for UTHM as it strengthens its global positioning in innovative education, digital capability building, and impactful international collaboration—particularly through its ongoing partnership with UNESCO Regional Office Jakarta and Tablet Academy United Kingdom, which continues to support the development of capable, future‑ready educators.

CHARTING PROGRESS: STRENGTHENING AI AND DIGITAL SKILLS THROUGH THE UNESCO GLOBAL SKILLS ACADEMY (GSA) WITH TABLET ACADEMY UNITED KINGDOM

The UNESCO Chair and UNEVOC Centre at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) successfully hosted a dynamic and forward-looking briefing on the Digital Skills Review (DSR) and Master Teacher Trainer (MTT) programme at Dewan Jemaah, UTHM Tunku Tun Aminah Library, Level 5, on 23 February 2026.

Implemented under the UNESCO Global Skills Academy (GSA), this strategic initiative strengthens institutional capacity in digital competencies and the meaningful integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in teaching and learning at UTHM. The programme is delivered in close collaboration with Tablet Academy United Kingdom and UNESCO Jakarta, reflecting a robust international partnership for educational innovation.

Representing Tablet Academy United Kingdom were two highly experienced and engaging trainers, Ms. Samantha O’Leary and Mr. Ross Hunter. The session was further honoured by the presence of Mr. Hiromichi Katayama and Ms. Yuniasih Purwanti from UNESCO Jakarta.

UTHM management was represented by Prof. Ts. Dr. Abdul Mutalib bin Leman, Acting Provost of UTHM Pagoh Campus. Also in attendance were Prof. Emeritus Dr. Jailani bin Md Yunos, Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Educators; Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Lai Chee Sern, Deputy Director of the Malaysia Research Institute for Professional Education and Training (MyRIVET); Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Affero Ismail, Project Lead I and Manager of the UTHM UNEVOC Centre; Ts. Dr. ‘Aisyah binti Mohamed Rehan, Project Secretary I; and Dr. Siti Noor Fauziah Abd Rahim, Communications Officer for the UNESCO Chair for TVET Educators. The session also brought together Deans, Heads of Centres, senior university officials, and newly appointed trainers for the MTT programme.

The programme commenced with an insightful introduction and UTHM overview delivered by Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Affero Ismail. This was followed by the presentation of the Digital Skills Review (DSR) findings by Mr. Ross Hunter, while Ms. Samantha O’Leary shared interim results from a survey involving 270 respondents out of approximately 1,300 UTHM academic staff. These findings provide a robust evidence base to guide the next phase of programme implementation.

The presentation sparked lively and constructive discussions among participants, yielding valuable insights to inform Phase 2 of the initiative. The post-break session shifted focus to the Master Teacher Trainer (MTT) Programme, including the upcoming in-person bootcamp (1–2 days) to be conducted by Tablet Academy trainers throughout the week, involving approximately 40 UTHM academic staff.

Deliberations centred on key contemporary themes, including AI-informed pedagogy, ethical and responsible AI use, personalised learning access, bias in digital tools, and strategies to scale MTT engagement both nationally and internationally.

The four-hour session concluded on a purposeful note, with clear next steps identified—most notably encouraging broader faculty participation in the ongoing questionnaire and advancing preparations for Phase 2 of the GSA Learning Pathway towards wider digital empowerment.

The briefing reaffirmed UTHM’s steadfast commitment to innovative AI integration, digital skills advancement, and impactful international collaboration in education. With strong momentum in place, UTHM now looks ahead to launching the first and second cohorts of the Master Teacher Trainer (MTT) programme with Tablet Academy United Kingdom in the coming days!
