EMPOWER would like to express our sincere appreciation to the High Commission of Canada in Malaysia for their support through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI). We are grateful for the trust and support extended to us as we work towards advancing women’s political participation in Malaysia. Looking forward to putting this support into meaningful action.

New partnerships, fresh ideas, and a shared commitment to positive change!✨

Last Thursday, we were thrilled to welcome our new Canada Fund for Local Initiatives partners at a hybrid networking session. High Commissioner Jodi Robinson opened the event with an inspiring remarks and partners also had the opportunity to meet our new Counsellor for Political, Economic and Public Affairs, Leigh McCumber.

To all our shortlisted partners: Congratulations and thank you for being part of this year's CFLI community. We look forward to working alongside you to support meaningful local initiatives and make a lasting impact together.

The Projek30% team from Empower , Association of Women Lawyers and Penang Women's Development Corporation-PWDC met with SUHAKAM (Human Rights Commission of Malaysia) recently to share where we are with the campaign and discuss our next steps in pushing for Akta Projek30% (Gender Parity in Political Participation Act).

A big thank you to the Suhakam team for meeting with us and to Commissioner Melissa Akhir for her continued support and guidance toward Projek30%.

The last 3 state elections have seen a decline in the number of women elected as state representatives. It is clear that representation cannot depend on voluntary commitments and promises. We need Akta Projek30% to secure meaningful representation for women in politics.

This weekend, Negeri Sembilan voters will head to the polls. However, the representation of women among candidates remains a concern.

Only 9 out of 103 candidates (8.7%) contesting are women, despite women making up the majority of eligible voters in the state at 50.23% (446,747 voters).

Women are active participants in Malaysia's democracy as voters, yet they remain significantly underrepresented among those given the opportunity to contest and shape decisions in elected office. As we look towards GE16, increasing women's political representation must remain a top priority.

At EMPOWER, we continue to advocate for greater women's political representation and a Malaysia. However, meaningful change takes sustained advocacy and that is only possible with the support of people like you. If you believe in a more representative democracy, swipe through to learn more about EMPOWER's work and how you can support our efforts.

The recent Johor state elections has delivered a strong reminder about the importance of keeping pressure on political parties and the government to ensure fair and equal representation of women in politics. The number of women elected to the Johor State Assembly has declined significantly from 25% to just 17.9%.

The decline in women representatives means fewer voices advocating for policies that reflect the needs and experiences of women and girls. There is urgent need for stronger commitment from political parties to field more women candidates and ensure they have a fair opportunity to lead.

At EMPOWER, we continue to advocate for greater women's political representation and a Malaysia. However, meaningful change takes sustained advocacy and that is only possible with the support of people like you.
