Some projects begin with a plan.
This one began with a message.
โXD, can you join a Zoom call at 3:50 pm today?โ
It was from Dr Choy on 7 April.
We thought she wanted to discuss something for later in the year.
Instead, she said, โThis event will start soon. When can you co-host?โ
Soon.
As inโฆ less than a month.
Not paid.
With a new venue.
A new audience.
A new agenda.
And a dream that felt too big for the time we had.
But we said yes.
Because when the work is about real people and real inclusion, you do not walk away.
What people do not see are the long nights, the redesigning of materials, the rewriting of scripts, the rebuilding of workflows, the endless visits to Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, the quiet prayers that the weather would hold, and the hope that our small team would somehow stretch enough to carry everything.
What people do not see is the courage of a motherly leader like Dr Choy, who fought behind the scenes to secure the venue when the first door closed.
What people do not see is Teacher Jessica coaching thirteen neurodiverse youths and their parents with so much love that it softened all our hearts.
What people do not see is the financial strain, the emotional weight, the exhaustion that comes from choosing to do things the right way instead of the easy way.
But what people will see is the picture we post, smiling, not exhaustion,
is the joy on the faces of our youths,
the pride in their parents' eyes,
the beauty of a community learning together,
and the quiet truth that inclusion is not a concept.
It is a commitment.
Was it worth it?
Yes.
Because some paths are meant to be walked even when they cost us more than we expected. The uncertainty about how we are going to recover the huge costs of carrying out this event.
We might not have loads of funds, but that does not displace our courage and confidence to make a difference.
Especially when they lead to moments that remind us why we do this work in the first place.
Thank you, dear friends, for supporting the work we do with your in-kind and cash contributions. Your periodic financial support has brought relief to our work when we needed it most. Thank you for standing with us.
