This September, we are inviting young explorers and their families to spend a weekend in the Garden with our friend, Lincoln Khoo, an experienced outdoors facilitator who has spent over 20 years living and learning alongside Orang Asli communities in our forests.

Over two days and one night, you will set up your own campsite, build bamboo gadgets, cook outdoors, gather around a campfire, fish at the beach and dig for clams at the shoreline. 

The kind of weekend that stays with them long after the tent is packed away.

JUNGLE RUMBLE FEATURE, 15 AUG — Richard D is a Penang-based DJ, drummer, and bedroom producer deeply rooted in the underground. A key figure in Penang’s DIY and punk scenes, he is also the founder of BagiJadi, a platform pushing raw, left-field sounds that blur the lines between techno, house, acid, and rave.

Mostly found in the studio cooking up rough, understated tracks, Richard D’s sound thrives in the spaces between genres-raw, unpolished, and always grounded in a no-frills, underground ethos. Whether behind the decks or the drum kit, his approach stays true to his roots: gritty, honest, and ever-evolving.

JUNGLE RUMBLE FEATURE, 15 AUG — I M MJN (pronounced “Imagine”) is a Penang-based graphic designer and artist with a deep love for straight lines, geometry, and grids-elements that define his distinctive visual style. Originally from Penang, he spent several years in Kuala Lumpur before returning to his roots in 2012.

Formerly a Junior Art Director he now works as a freelancer while actively participating in art shows. His works explore the potential of rigid, flat-color geometric shapes, reflecting his training in graphic design and mastery of grids and visual hierarchy. Known for his meticulous approach, IMMJN often embraces the challenge of perfecting color schemes in his creations.

In recent years, he has sh***ed focus toward painting, striving to move away trom digital tools and embrace more tactile, hands-on methods of producing art, furthering his evolution as a creative.

Meet the fruit of the Fish Killer Tree (Barringtonia asiatica), known in Malay as Putat. Those green fruits hanging in clusters beneath the drooping leaves have very unexpected uses.

The seed inside the fruit is poisonous, containing toxic saponins. Local fishermen have long grated the pulp and thrown it into freshwater streams, releasing toxins that stun nearby fish, causing them to float to the surface where they can be easily netted.

But here is the interesting twist. The fleshy outer skin of the fruit is perfectly edible for humans. It turns up in local salads and is eaten dipped in sambal belacan, the classic Malaysian spicy paste of chilli, lime and toasted shrimp.

Poisonous seed. Edible skin. A fruit with two very different stories.

CHAI & CHAT: SEKOLAH MAIN WAYANG, 12 AUG — “This is shadow puppetry by the marginalised. Their shadows are beautiful. Their reality isn’t.”

Tomorrow evening, we invite you to the Gardens as we have a cosy, nighttime conversation over chai with Fairuz Sulaiman of Sekolah Main Wayang (SMW) - fresh off their performance at the George Town Festival.

Fairuz reflects upon SMW’s decade-long journey; sharing the inner workings of using play and art as a tool to nurture self realisation and critical consciousness, and takes a closer look at the past five years spent with Orang Asli communities through Wayang TEKtek. You’ll also have the chance to try your hands at shadow puppetry!

JUNGLE RUMBLE FEATURE, 15 AUG — Simon Schmieder aka Simon Schmieder left Berlin and his former DJ life behind four years ago, trading the club lights for a new chapter in Asia. His compositions traveled with him on his hard drive and were never forgotten. The urge to get behind the decks again became bigger.

After falling in love with the Garden and the community, Simon kept finding his way back to the Red Grove Deck for these special nights.

This Saturday, expect a carefully crafted journey through fresh sounds, unexpected gems, and original compositions born in another time, on another continent. Blending past and present, the jungle heat and city memories, Simon’s sets constantly shape-shift with one intention: to create something truly unique, just for that moment.

We thought the macaques were taking all the passionfruit! But no, it was our fellow community gardener!

Jokes aside, growing edibles on the forest edge is a lesson in humility, adaptation and creativity.

The conditions are challenging. The macaques are opportunistic — and yes, they do take much of the passionfruit if we don't get to it first. The soil is forever being reclaimed by the forest and rains. Yet things grow. Slowly, stubbornly, beautifully.
Every session in the community garden is part harvest, part soil work, part negotiation with nature and usually, a proper workout.

Come sweat it out with us. Get your hands in the soil, learn what thrives on the forest edge, exchange notes with other community gardeners and leave with a little more respect for everything the forest gives and takes in equal measure.

Our sessions run on Friday mornings. They are free for Spice Fam members and require the purchase of a Garden Entry ticket for Public/non-members. Find more information at tsgspicefam.com/calendar.

It sounds simple. But what does it mean? How do you do it? Where do you start?

Our weekly Forest Bathing Walks are an opportunity to come and explore what that means.

Move through the Garden without a destination. To listen to the rustle of leaves, feel the cool of the shade, observe the light filter through the forest canopy and let nature do what it has always done — restore us to our natural balance.

In a world that pulls us in every direction, choosing to slow down, to sit with the forest, to actually listen takes intention.

“Visited for a chill activity to do in between enjoying the beaches. This garden is an absolute gem. The information provided is interesting but not too much so that it’s boring. There’s lots of cute winding paths so each section feels calm and secluded. There’s a number of things to enjoy, like a tea service, bamboo swing with garden views, the tropical spice section, waterfalls and more. The gift shop also had lots of cute options of spices, soaps, tea and essential oils which would make great souvenirs. Would definitely recommend for a tranquil little afternoon escape.”
