Course Participants (CPs) of the Malaysian Armed Forces Defence College Cohort 46/2026 successfully conducted the Economic and Security Field Studies (ESFS) Northern Region and Southern Thailand Visit from 20 to 24 July 2026. The programme was organised to enhance participantsโ€™ strategic understanding of the relationship between economic development, border governance, regional connectivity and national security within Malaysiaโ€™s Northern Region and neighbouring Southern Thailand.

The visit focused on several strategic themes, including land and border security, border governance, economic resilience, regional connectivity and inter-agency cooperation. Through engagements with military formations, border-control agencies, regional development institutions, diplomatic representatives and strategic industries, participants gained practical exposure to the opportunities and challenges affecting the Malaysiaโ€“Thailand border region.

During the programme in Butterworth, Penang, participants attended a series of official briefings delivered by the 2nd Infantry Division Headquarters, Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA), Malaysiaโ€“Thailand Border Coordination Office (MTBCO) and Lumut Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd (LUNAS). The briefings provided valuable perspectives on military preparedness, border-security coordination, socio-economic development and the role of the domestic defence industry in supporting Malaysiaโ€™s national security interests.

The delegation also visited the Headquarters Integrated Area Defence System (HQIADS) at RMAF Butterworth Air Base. Participants received a briefing on the role of HQIADS within the Five Power Defence Arrangements and its contribution towards strengthening interoperability, operational readiness and regional defence cooperation. Courtesy calls were also conducted on the Deputy Commander of HQIADS and the Commander of RMAF Butterworth Air Base.

At Bukit Kayu Hitam, participants received a briefing from the Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) on integrated border management, enforcement coordination and the control of people and goods entering or leaving Malaysia. The delegation subsequently crossed the Malaysiaโ€“Thailand border and attended a briefing by Thai authorities at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex in Sadao. These engagements provided first-hand exposure to the operational processes, coordination mechanisms and security challenges associated with managing one of the regionโ€™s busiest international land-border crossings.

In Hat Yai, participants attended briefings by a lecturer from Prince of Songkla University, the Consulate General of Malaysia in Songkhla and Trans Thai-Malaysia (Thailand) Limited. The engagements provided broader perspectives on the political, socio-economic and security environment in Southern Thailand, Malaysiaโ€™s diplomatic and consular responsibilities in the region, and the strategic importance of cross-border energy cooperation.

The visit to Trans Thai-Malaysia (Thailand) Limited further enhanced participantsโ€™ understanding of the relationship between energy infrastructure, economic development and national security. The companyโ€™s cross-border natural-gas facilities demonstrate the importance of sustained bilateral cooperation in ensuring energy security, industrial development and the continuity of energy supplies for both Malaysia and Thailand.

Overall, the ESFS Northern Region and Southern Thailand Visit provided valuable first-hand exposure to the complex relationship between border security, economic resilience, diplomacy, defence cooperation and regional connectivity. The programme reinforced the importance of integrated inter-agency and bilateral cooperation in addressing transnational security challenges while facilitating legitimate trade, investment and people-to-people connectivity.

The visit contributed significantly to the professional development of MAFDC Cohort 46/2026 participants by strengthening their strategic awareness and enhancing their appreciation of the economic-security nexus in safeguarding Malaysiaโ€™s sovereignty, national resilience and long-term strategic interests.
