The establishment of the Sultan Mizan Antarctic Research Foundation or the Yayasan Penyelidikan Antartika Sultan Mizan (YPASM) was approved by the Cabinet on 6 June 2012. Subsequently, on 18 July 2012, YPASM was registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee and not having share capital, under the Companies Act. 1965. YPASM was officially launched by Ke Bawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Al-Wathiqu Billah Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, Sultan of Terengganu on 19 July, 2012 in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia

During the SCAR Delegates meetings in Oslo, the Malaysian Delegation took the opportunity to share the YPASM Antarctica Day 2025 Celebration Book - Malaysia's Legacy in the Land of Ice that was published by UNITEN Press with our international partners.

The publication was presented to countries with which Malaysia has established Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs), including the United Kingdom, Türkiye, Chile and Ukraine.

We were also pleased to share the book with Costa Rica and Colombia, in appreciation of their support in providing opportunities for Malaysian researchers to participate in Antarctic expeditions.

Beyond sharing a publication, these exchanges represent the relationships that continue to connect Malaysia with the wider Antarctic community.

YPASM looks forward to strengthening and expanding research collaboration, knowledge exchange and opportunities for Malaysian researchers to engage in Antarctic research alongside our international partners.

Together, we continue to build stronger bridges between Malaysia and the global Antarctic research community. 🤝❄️🇲🇾

Malaysia at the SCAR Delegates Meeting 2026 | Oslo, Norway

Following the SCAR Open Science Conference 2026, Malaysia was represented at the ###IX SCAR Delegates Meeting, held from 17–19 August 2026 in Oslo, Norway.

The Malaysian Delegation comprised:

The meeting brought together representatives from SCAR member countries to discuss the future direction of Antarctic and Southern Ocean research and international scientific cooperation.

Among the key highlights were discussions on the SCAR Strategic Plan, the upcoming Antarctic and Southern Ocean Horizon Scan, and preparations towards the 5th International Polar Year (IPY-5).

These discussions are particularly important as the global polar research community looks towards emerging scientific priorities and identifies opportunities for greater international collaboration in the years ahead.

For Malaysia, participation in the SCAR Delegates Meeting provides an important platform to stay connected to global polar science priorities, contribute to international discussions, strengthen partnerships, and position Malaysian polar research for future opportunities. 🇲🇾❄️🌏

YPASM at the SCAR Open Science Conference 2026 | Oslo, Norway

The Yayasan Penyelidikan Antartika Sultan Mizan (YPASM) participated in the SCAR Open Science Conference 2026 in Oslo, Norway, joining researchers and polar science communities from around the world.

Our participation provided an important opportunity to engage in scientific workshops, exchange knowledge and perspectives, and gain valuable insights into the current global polar research landscape, emerging research priorities and opportunities for international collaboration.

We were also proud to see four YPASM-funded researchers present their research findings at the conference, showcasing the breadth of Malaysian contributions to polar science:
