Conservebyu by Sawit Kinabalu Sawit Kinabalu, a premier investment arm of the State Government in oil palm industry, has allocated 2,632 hectares within its estate in Sungai Pin (Sg.

Pin) Estate, Kinabatangan, as a conservation area of which further known as Sg. Pin Conservation Area A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Sawit Kinabalu and the Sabah Forestry Department in October 2017 during the International heart of Borneo (HoB) Conference which registered the Sungai Pin Conservation area under a European Union REDD+ program. This was the ultimate recognition

of the importance of Sungai Pin Conservation Area for Bornean biodiversity and climate change mitigation. Encouraged by the conservation success at Sungai Pin, Sawit Kinabalu has identified close to more than 7,000 hectares of other conservation areas within our other estates in Kudat, Beaufort, Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Tawau. The identification of these areas were prompted by our on-going efforts to become certified under the RSPO, ISCC and MSPO certification schemes.

๐ŸŒฟ Welcoming the Sabah Society, Sandakan Branch to Sg Pin Conservation Area (SPnCA)

KINABATANGAN: On 1 August 2026, the Conservation and Biodiversity Unit was pleased to welcome members of the Sabah Society, Sandakan Branch and their families to Sg Pin Conservation Area (SPnCA).

The visit provided participants with an introduction to the conservation efforts and biodiversity initiatives being carried out at SPnCA. The group also enjoyed an Orang Sungai-style lunch, accompanied by a cooking demonstration of ikan patin salai masak lemak, which offered an engaging introduction to the local food heritage of the Kinabatangan area.

The programme concluded with a hands-on beading activity, where both adults and children enthusiastically created their own bracelets and necklaces. It was especially encouraging to see the younger participants actively taking part in the cooking demonstration and traditional craft activity.

The visit brought together conservation awareness, local knowledge, traditional food and community-based experiencesโ€”reflecting the type of meaningful and educational nature-based tourism that SPnCA aims to promote.

We sincerely thank the Sabah Society, Sandakan Branch for visiting us and for their wonderful feedback. We look forward to welcoming the group back for more experiences at SPnCA, perhaps including a river cruise and an overnight stay in the future.

Perfectly in sync.

Some moments in nature last only a heartbeat. Two Lesser Adjutants soaring side by side over the skies of Sungai Pin Conservation Area, a breathtaking sight, captured at just the right moment.

The Lesser Adjutant is currently listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. While conservation efforts have helped improve its outlook, protecting wetlands and forests remains essential for its future.

Have you ever spotted a Lesser Adjutant in the wild? Tell us where you saw one! ๐Ÿ‘‡

Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) Meeting | Luboh Estate | 22 June 2026

Luboh Estate successfully conducted its first Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) Meeting with external stakeholders, bringing together representatives from government agencies, local communities, and strategic partners to strengthen collaboration and discuss matters related to estate operations, sustainability, and community engagement.

The programme featured a presentation on the Sg. Pin Conservation Area (SPnCA) presented by SK Green Services & Tours Sdn. Bhd. An exhibition booth by SK Green Services & Tours Sdn. On 23 June 2026, Sandau Estate and Mill, Lahad Datu, welcomed a delegation of 13 students from Oregon State University (OSU) as part of the SK Green Services & Tours Sdn. Bhd., Conservation & Biodiversity Unit (CBU) Educational Tours Package. The delegation was led by Mr. German Vargas Gutierrez, with Ms. Joanna Sara Tan and Ms. Justine Rojas serving as co-leaders, while the group was accompanied by Ms. Erdy from River Ju**ie.

The educational visit was designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the oil palm industry by combining practical exposure to plantation and mill operations with insights into sustainable production and biodiversity conservation.

During the visit to Sandau Estate, the students were introduced to various aspects of plantation management, including harvesting techniques, field maintenance, crop management, and good agricultural practices. As part of the hands-on learning experience, the students participated in a harvesting session where they had the opportunity to collect Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB), allowing them to better appreciate the skills and operational requirements involved in oil palm cultivation.

The programme continued at Sandau Mill, where the delegation was guided through the palm oil milling process, from the reception of harvested FFB to the production of crude palm oil and palm kernel products. The visit provided valuable insights into the operational journey from plantation to mill, highlighting the importance of efficiency, quality assurance, workplace safety, and best management practices throughout the production chain.

As part of the Educational Tours Package, the students also learned about Sawit Kinabalu's commitment to sustainable oil palm cultivation and landscape-level conservation. The session highlighted the company's implementation of good agricultural practices, responsible land management, environmental protection measures, and biodiversity conservation initiatives through the Sg. Pin Conservation Area (SPnCA). Participants were introduced to the role of conservation set-asides, habitat restoration, wildlife protection, and ecosystem connectivity in supporting sustainable palm oil production.

The educational tour reflects Sawit Kinabalu's commitment to providing experiential learning opportunities for universities and educational institutions, promoting a greater understanding of the relationship between sustainable agriculture, responsible natural resource management, and biodiversity conservation. Through this initiative, participants gained a balanced perspective on how modern oil palm plantations can successfully integrate production objectives with environmental stewardship and long-term sustainability.

SK Green Services & Tours Sdn. Bhd. extend our sincere appreciation to the Management and staff of Sandau Estate and Sandau Mill for their warm hospitality, excellent coordination, and invaluable support in making this educational visit a success. Their willingness to share their expertise and operational experience greatly enriched the learning experience for the OSU delegation, and we look forward to continued collaboration in promoting sustainable palm oil education and conservation.
