The official page of the Sabah Forestry Department, Malaysia The past functions of the department focused primarily on the collection of royalty.

The Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) was established in 1914 when the state was still under the rule of the British Borneo Chartered Company. Starting from a humble beginning of 6 staff, the department has grown over the years and has established 27 District Forestry Offices with a workforce of about 2,000 staff. The department however has evolved over the years and later assumed broader responsibi

lities covering the protection and conservation of forest reserves based on the concept of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM). Since its establishment, the Forestry Department has established forest reserves throughout the state, and is currently the custodian for about 3.6 million hectares or 49.1% of the state’s land mass. Based on the powers vested under the Forest Enactment 1968 and Forest Rules 1969, the department has undertaken various efforts to protect and manage the state’s forests. The crucial turning point which has influenced the department as an organisation is in the late 1980s when SFM was introduced and later adopted for statewide application in 1997. Since then, the department had been restructured and its capacity enhanced to cover the many facets of SFM.

On 20th August 2026, Datuk Zulkifli Suara, Chief Conservator of Forests, delivered a special address at the Borneo Forestry Cooperative 2026 Conference: Designing Sustainable Industrial Tree Plantation Systems & Landscapes, at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Kota Kinabalu. In his speech, he reiterated that Sabah’s forest plantations must be developed as productive and resilient landscapes that support a competitive timber industry, while conserving natural forests, protecting biodiversity, and benefiting local communities, a true essence of the Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) concept. The Conference was organised by BFC and attended by 124 representatives from various backgrounds such as the government agencies, industry leaders, non-governmental organisations, members of the academic, including event sponsors. The conference provided a platform for industry practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to exchange perspectives and strengthen the future direction of the forest plantation sector.

The Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) participated in Tropical Forestry 2026 (TF2026), an international conference organised by the Faculty of Tropical Forestry, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), under the theme “Tropical Forestry and Sustainability for Human Society.”

The Opening Ceremony featured a welcoming speech by YBhg. Professor Datuk Dr. Kasim Hj. Mansor, Vice-Chancellor of UMS. The conference was subsequently officiated by YB Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability.

TF2026 brought together researchers, policymakers, government agencies, industry representatives and other forestry stakeholders to exchange knowledge, research findings and best practices in tropical forestry and sustainability.

The two-day main conference programme featured keynote and invited speaker sessions, as well as concurrent technical sessions covering forest management, forest diversity, nature tourism and recreation, social forestry, biodiversity and conservation, forestry technology and interdisciplinary approaches.

During the Invited Speakers Session on the second day, Mr Indra Purwandita H. Sunjoto, Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests (Planning and Management), represented SFD and shared Sabah’s perspectives on sustainable forest stewardship, the green economy and climate resilience.

The SFD delegation was led by Mr Indra Purwandita H. Sunjoto and comprised Mdm Rosila Anthony, Mr Jarry K. Lajanga, Ms Viviannye Paul, Ms Kristo Henry William and Mr Razy bin Japir.

SFD extends its sincere congratulations and appreciation to the TF2026 Organising Committee and the Faculty of Tropical Forestry, UMS, for the successful organisation of this significant international conference. The Department also commends the organisers for providing a valuable platform for meaningful discussions, professional networking and the strengthening of collaboration among the forestry research, government and industry communities.

SFD remains committed to advancing science-based decision-making, sustainable forest management and the conservation of Sabah’s valuable forest resources.

*Kursus Pengurusan Fail dan Rekod bagi Juruaudit Dalaman ISO*

17 - 18 Ogos 2026, Bahagian Pengurusan Sumber Manusia telah menganjurkan Kursus Pengurusan Fail dan Rekod bagi Juruaudit Dalaman ISO bertempat di Pejabat Perhutanan Daerah Kota Kinabalu.

Kursus ini telah disertai oleh seramai 19 orang peserta, terdiri daripada 15 orang Juruaudit Dalaman ISO dan 4 orang pegawai jabatan.

Kursus ini bertujuan untuk:

• Memberikan kompetensi kepada Juruaudit Dalaman ISO dalam proses am kawalan rekod;
• Meningkatkan pengetahuan mengenai konsep dan amalan pengurusan rekod dalam penyediaan Klasifikasi Rekod Urusan Am (Housekeeping) dan Rekod Fungsian (Functional);
• Meningkatkan kesedaran mengenai kepentingan keselamatan dan kawal selia pemusnahan rekod; dan
• Memantapkan kecemerlangan Hala Tuju Tadbir Urus Rekod Jabatan.

Penguasaan ilmu berkaitan pengurusan fail dan rekod amat penting khususnya kepada Juruaudit Dalaman ISO dalam melaksanakan tanggungjawab pengauditan. Pengurusan rekod yang teratur, sistematik dan boleh dipercayai dapat membantu juruaudit dalam menilai tahap pematuhan terhadap prosedur yang ditetapkan, mengenal pasti ketidakakuran serta membuat penemuan audit berdasarkan bukti yang sahih.

Pengurusan rekod yang efisien, sistematik dan mematuhi peraturan yang berkuat kuasa bukan sahaja dapat menyokong keberkesanan pelaksanaan audit tetapi sekaligus turut ke arah pemantapan tadbir urus dan kecemerlangan pengurusan Jabatan.

15 August 2026. Sandakan - The Sandakan Day Memorial was held at the Sandakan Memorial Park (Sibuga Forest Reserve) in Taman Rimba, this early morning at 7:00 am. to remember the fallen heroes during the war. Organized by Sabah Tourism Board and Sandakan Municipal Council, the event was officiated by YB Datuk Ceasar Mandela Malakun, representing the Chief Minister of Sabah. Foreign dignitaries present included the Australia, British, New Zealand High Commissioners and representative of the US Embassy. Sabah Forestry Department was represented by Jurimin Ebin, Dr Arthur Chung, Rosli S**i, Jonathan Lucas and staff of DFO Sandakan.

Lawatan Kerja Ketua Konservator Hutan, Datuk Zulkifli Suara, ke Sabah Softwoods Berhad, dari 13-14 Ogos 2026, adalah untuk melihat operasi huluan dan hiliran perladangan hutan SSB. Rombongan turut melawat B’Nature yang menawarkan pakej pelancongan berasaskan “Plantation Tourism”. Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif SSB, Datuk Dr Haji Mohd Daud bin Tampokong, menyambut baik rombongan lawatan kerja tersebut yang turut dihadiri oleh Timbalan Ketua Konservator Hutan, Tn Ismailey Ismail, Ketua Bahagian Pengurusan Hutan Lestari, Pegawai Perhutanan Wilayah Tawau, Pegawai-Pegawai Kanan dan Pegawai Penyelidik dari FRC.

𝐒𝐄𝐏𝐈𝐋𝐎𝐊 | 𝟏𝟒 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – The Forest Research Centre (FRC), Sepilok hosted an Industrial Training Presentation involving five (5) students from the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Agricultural Science, Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture (FPL), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Sandakan Campus. The students underwent their industrial training at FRC Sepilok, with placements in the Biotechnology, Soil Science and Seed Sections.

The programme, held at Dewan Selangan Batu, FRC Sepilok, commenced with welcoming remarks by the Deputy Conservator of Forests (Research & Development) Dr Arthur Y.C. Chung, followed by a speech by Dr. Borhan Bin Abd. Haya @ Yahya of UMS-FPL.

During the presentation sessions, the students shared their experiences, knowledge and learning outcomes gained throughout their industrial training. Presentations were delivered by Aurelia Ethel Claudius and Norshahilah Binti Rosmani from the Biotechnology Section, Stephanie Abel from the Soil Section, and Fenny Joseph and Norazrina Binti Julip from the Seed Section. Each presentation was followed by a question-and-answer session.

The programme concluded with the presentation of souvenirs and a group photography session.

The programme provided a valuable platform for the students to present what they had learned and gained practical exposure to a professional working environment. It also contributed towards strengthening knowledge sharing and collaboration between the Sabah Forestry Department, through the Forest Research Centre, Sepilok, and Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

MEETING BETWEEN SABAH FORESTRY DEPARTMENT AND AUSTRALIA’S DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS’ AFFAIRS (DVA)
13 August 2026 | Sandakan
In conjunction with Sandakan Memorial Day on 15 August 2026, the Department welcomed an official delegation from Australia’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), led by Ms. Sarah Kennedy, Assistant Secretary, together with Ms. Lisa Donkin and Ms. Melissa Cooke, to the Forestry Headquarters in Sandakan.
The bilateral meeting was chaired by Tn. Indra Purwandita Sunjoto, Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests (Planning & Management), and focused on the status of the Sandakan Memorial Park Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), as well as opportunities to strengthen future cooperation between the two Parties.
Prior to the meeting, the delegation visited the Heart of Borneo (HoB) Atrium exhibition, which showcases SFD’s conservation efforts and the history of forestry in Sabah.
The engagement reflects the enduring partnership between the two Parties in preserving the legacy of Sandakan Memorial Park, commemorating the sacrifices and suffering of prisoners of war during the Sandakan Death Marches, and supporting the sustainable management and conservation of this significant historical site.

𝟐–𝟗 𝐎𝐠𝐨𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 | 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐨𝐫, 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐬

Delegasi Program Perladangan Hutan di bawah Pusat Penyelidikan Perhutanan (PPP), diketuai oleh Puan Maria Ajik, Ketua Program Perladangan Hutan, Jabatan Perhutanan Sabah (JPS) telah mengadakan lawatan teknikal dan perbincangan penyelidikan berkaitan Meranti Temak Nipis (MTN) bersama Institut Penyelidikan Perhutanan Malaysia (FRIM) dari 2 hingga 9 Ogos 2026.

Program dimulakan di FRIM Kepong dengan sesi pembukaan, pembentangan projek MTN dan perbincangan teknikal, diikuti lawatan ke Field 53, iaitu plot penyelidikan MTN, serta Forest Skywalk. Delegasi telah disambut oleh Dr. Nor Hasnida Hassan, Pengarah Bahagian Bioteknologi Perhutanan FRIM, bersama Encik Dasrul Iskandar Darus, Pegawai Penyelidik dan Ketua Cawangan Silvikultur Ladang, FRIM. Turut terlibat sepanjang program ialah Dr. Farah Fazwa Md Ariff serta pegawai dan penyelidik FRIM yang berkaitan.

Lawatan lapangan kemudiannya diteruskan ke SPF Segamat, Johor, yang melibatkan sesi taklimat oleh Puan Faridah binti Ahmad Azam dan Puan Zawiah Ngah, diikuti lawatan ke plot-plot MTN bagi meninjau perkembangan dan keadaan tanaman di lapangan. Lawatan ini turut memberi peluang kepada delegasi untuk bertukar pandangan serta mendapatkan maklumat berkaitan pengurusan dan penyelidikan spesies MTN di tapak.

Di SPF Mata Ayer, Perlis, delegasi menerima taklimat daripada Puan Noor Syahirah Zulkefli, Pengurus SPF Mata Ayer, bersama Dr. Farah Fazwa Md Ariff selaku Penyelaras SPF Mata Ayer. Lawatan teknikal merangkumi Pusat Rejuvenasi MTN, tapak semaian dan pokok ibu MTN. Delegasi turut berpeluang mengikuti demonstrasi teknikal yang disampaikan oleh Dr. Sures Kumar a/l Muniandy, sekali gus memberi pendedahan lebih dekat mengenai aspek pembiakan, pengurusan bahan tanaman serta pembangunan MTN.

Program kemudiannya kembali ke FRIM Kepong bagi sesi perbincangan dan soal jawab serta majlis penutupan. Delegasi sekali lagi diterima oleh Dr. Nor Hasnida Hassan, dengan kehadiran Dr. Farah Fazwa Md Ariff dan Dr. Rosdi Koter. Program turut diserikan dengan penyerahan cenderahati dan sesi bergambar sebagai tanda penghargaan serta kenang-kenangan antara kedua-dua pihak.

Jabatan Perhutanan Sabah merakamkan setinggi-tinggi penghargaan dan terima kasih kepada pihak FRIM serta semua pegawai dan penyelidik yang terlibat atas sambutan mesra, perkongsian kepakaran, taklimat, demonstrasi teknikal dan kerjasama yang diberikan sepanjang program ini.

Lawatan ini menjadi platform penting bagi pertukaran ilmu, pengalaman dan kepakaran berkaitan penyelidikan serta pengurusan Meranti Temak Nipis, di samping memperkukuh jaringan kerjasama penyelidikan antara Jabatan Perhutanan Sabah dan FRIM ke arah menyokong pembangunan serta pengurusan sumber hutan secara mampan.

𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐀𝐊𝐀𝐍 | 𝟔 𝐎𝐆𝐎𝐒 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – Makmal Ujian Kayu, Pusat Penyelidikan Perhutanan (PPP), Jabatan Perhutanan Sabah (JPS) telah menerima kunjungan Badan Pensijilan Produk Lembaga Perindustrian Kayu Malaysia (MTIB CB) bagi sesi lawatan dan perbincangan kolaborasi teknikal berkaitan pengujian produk berasaskan kayu. Delegasi MTIB CB diwakili oleh Timbalan Pengarah Unit Persijilan Produk MTIB, Puan Siti Aishah Abu Bakar bersama seorang pegawai.

Lawatan pihak MTIB CB ini bertujuan mendapatkan pendedahan awal mengenai kemudahan makmal dalam menjalankan pengujian produk kayu dan kapasiti pengujian yang djalankan di makmal terutama dalam pengujian pelepasan formaldehid, di samping menilai kesesuaian makmal sebagai rakan kerjasama teknikal bagi pelaksanaan Skim Pensijilan MTIB CB.

Sesi ini turut menjadi platform untuk meneroka potensi kerjasama strategik pada masa akan datang, khususnya dalam aspek sokongan pengujian dan kepakaran teknikal berkaitan produk panel berasaskan kayu. Kerjasama antara agensi seperti ini merupakan satu langkah positif dalam memperkukuh kapasiti teknikal, kepakaran pengujian serta sokongan terhadap industri perkayuan di Malaysia, khususnya di Sabah.

Dr. Joseph Tangah, Timbalan Ketua PPP (Pentadbiran & Pembangunan) turut menerima kunjungan ini dan hadir bersama dalam sesi perbincangan. JPS merakamkan penghargaan kepada pihak MTIB CB atas kunjungan dan minat untuk meneroka peluang kerjasama bersama Jabatan yang melibatkan Makmal Ujian Kayu, PPP.

6 & 7 Ogos 2026 -Jabatan Perhutanan Sabah telah menyertai pameran sempena Program Taklimat dan Tinjauan Keselamatan Yang Berhormat Menteri Dalam Negeri, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution bin Ismail bersama Perwakilan Asing ke Zon Selamat Sabah Timur (ESS Zone) yang berlangsung selama dua hari bertempat di Hotel Livingston, Sandakan.

Program ini melibatkan perwakilan asing daripada 14 buah negara, delegasi daripada Kementerian Dalam Negeri (KDN) serta Kerajaan Negeri Sabah, sebagai platform untuk memberikan gambaran secara langsung mengenai aspek keselamatan, pembangunan dan pengurusan kawasan di Zon Selamat Sabah Timur.

Penyertaan Jabatan Perhutanan Sabah dalam pameran ini turut menjadi platform penting untuk memperkenalkan peranan, fungsi serta usaha Jabatan dalam pengurusan hutan secara mampan, pemeliharaan biodiversiti dan pemuliharaan sumber hutan di Sabah kepada para delegasi dan perwakilan asing yang hadir.

Turut hadir pada hari pertama program ialah Setiausaha Kerajaan Negeri Sabah, Datuk Zainudin Aman, yang bersama-sama menyokong pelaksanaan program tersebut.
