Mr Chief Minister, When was Sarawak governed by a non-Sarawakian? Historically Sarawak was governed by the Sultan of Brunei, then under the Brooke Rajahs and finally under the British Colony before the formation of Malaysia. After gaining independence and self rule, your late father Tun Openg was installed as the first local Governor, followed by Tun Tuanku Hj Bujang your late father-in-law, followed by Tun Sallahuddin, then Tun Rahman followed by Tun Ahmad Zaidi, followed by Tun Salahuddin and the reigning Tun Taib Mahmud. On the other hand the Chief Ministers have always been a Sarawakian, Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan as the first CM, followed by Datuk Tawi Sli, then Tun Rahman, Tun Taib Mahmud, Tan Sri Adenan Satem and now your Rt Hon self. The full Sarawak Cabinet has always been filled by Sarawakians, the State Secretary has always been Sarawakians. Interestingly, SKN was removed primarily because he fought for the Sarawak cause and for promoting "Sarawak for Sarawakian" as SNAP's battle cry. Since the formation of Malaysia the Federal Government has always been the "Alliance" which was renamed Barisan Nasional in 1973. Interestingly too it was PBB which led the other component parties of BN from Sarawak to pledge "We will swim and sink" with BN. Are you, Rt Hon CM, envisaging that non-Sarawakians will be Sarawak's Governor, Chief Minister and fill the Cabinet posts? Will Sarawakians accept a non-Sarawakian to contest in Sarawak? I don't think so. To me heaven forbids. So I should say that we should never cast a shadow of non-Sarawakian governing Sarawak. It never will, and what can only happen in the future is Sarawak becoming an independent nation by itself.
Abang Johari Openg says to ensure the 'future of the state’, it should be governed by Sarawakians, adding he is satisfied with talks on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 with the federal government.
