Behind every hard hat, uniform, apron, or time card is a mother carrying burdens far heavier than any workload: rising prices, low wages, unsafe workplaces, work contractualisation, discrimination, and the daily struggle to balance work and care responsibilities. Yet despite these challenges, working mothers continue to organise, fight, and stand in solidarity for dignity, decent jobs, living wages, maternity protection, childcare, safe workplaces, and equal rights.

Trade unions recognise that the struggle for workers’ rights is also a struggle for women’s rights and mothers’ rights. A just workplace cannot exist while mothers are overworked, underpaid, and undervalued.

To all mothers who labour tirelessly at work and at home; your sacrifices build nations, your courage strengthens movements, and your love inspires generations.

Today and every day, BWI stands with you.

Happy Mother’s Day in solidarity. ❤️💪☮️✊

Our Global Union, BWI, is built through international solidarity. It was created from the understanding that workers are stronger when they stand for one another across borders, industries, and political pressures. Our history and every victory we have achieved come from that principle. At a time when rights and freedoms are under renewed attack, that solidarity must be strengthened and defended.

May Day should be a celebration of victories, but also a reminder of responsibility.

No step back on rights. No step back on democracy. No step back on peace.

The balance of power will not change by itself. It depends on our capacity to organise, to act together, and to defend what generations before us fought to build.

United we stand. Divided we fall.

Happy May Day.

Belém, 9 November 2025 — As COP30 opens in Belém under Brazil’s presidency, the Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI) is calling for worker protection and decent work to be placed at the heart of climate action.

The summit’s focus on adaptation, forests, and people-centred climate solutions resonates strongly with BWI’s two flagship priorities: defending construction and forestry workers from rising temperatures and extreme heat, and advancing decent work in the Amazon rainforest.

BWI urges governments to make legally enforceable heat-stress protections part of national adaptation plans, guaranteeing workers’ rights to water, shade, rest, and safe work stoppages, and to include these commitments under the Global Goal on Adaptation.
