STRENGTHENING EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT AND FAMILY SUPPORT IN KAVANGO WEST REGION

Nkurenkuru | 4 September 2026

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, delegation led by Ms. Loide Velishavo, Acting Director: Community Development, paid a courtesy visit to the Office of the Governor of Kavango West Region as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration and advance programmes aimed at improving the wellbeing and development of children and families.

The delegation engaged Hon. Verna Sinimbo, Governor of Kavango West Region, to brief the Regional Leadership on the Family, Early Childhood Development (ECD) and Start Right Programme, initiatives designed to strengthen families and promote positive development during the critical early years of a child’s life.

Hon. Governor Sinimbo warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed her appreciation to the Ministry for taking the initiative to engage the Region and share information on programmes that have the potential to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children, families and communities.

The engagement provided a valuable platform for dialogue, information sharing and stronger coordination between the Ministry and the Regional Leadership. Discussions highlighted the importance of investing in children from the earliest stages of life, strengthening families as the foundation of society, and ensuring that communities are adequately supported to create safe, nurturing and enabling environments for children.

The Governor emphasised that the development of children is a shared responsibility that requires concerted efforts from Government, families, traditional and community leadership, civil society and other stakeholders.

She welcomed the Ministry’s continued engagement with the Region, the importance of taking programmes directly to communities where their impact can be felt most meaningfully.

Following today’s stakeholder engagement, the delegation will proceed to engage stakeholders at constituency level, providing an opportunity to take the discussions closer to communities, gather grassroots perspectives and further strengthen the implementation and understanding of the Family, ECD and Start Right Programme.

The visit demonstrates the Region’s commitment to putting children and families at the heart of development and ensuring that national programmes are effectively translated into meaningful interventions at community level.

When we invest in our children today, we invest in the future of Kavango West Region and Namibia.
