The Africa Leadership Institute (ALI) requested various institutions in the Kunene Region, specifically from the Opuwo, Sesfontein, and Puros jurisdictions, to participate in the Major Team-Building and Culture Transformation Workshop held at Rock Lodge near Okahandja from 14–16 August 2026.

The workshop formed part of the six-month Opuwo, Puros, and Sesfontein Transformation Project, an evidence-based leadership and culture transformation programme designed to equip local authority leaders, officials, and key community stakeholders with the mindset, skills, and systems required to drive sustainable town-wide transformation.

The handing over of 24 commenced but not completed houses under the Mass Housing Development Programme at the Betonstein Construction Site in Opuwo, Kunene Region, took place on 06 August 2026 at 11h00 at the project site in Opuwo.

The keynote address was delivered by the Honourable Minister, James Sankwasa. The vote of thanks was presented by the Chairperson of the Management Committee of the Kunene Regional Council, Honourable Western Uakaisiua Muharukua.

The event marked an important milestone in the implementation of the Mass Housing Development Programme in the Kunene Region.

The Day of the African Child (DAC), commemorated annually on 16 June, was observed in Kamanjab, Kunene Region, under the theme: “Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa.”
This theme aligns with the African Union Theme of the Year 2026: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.” The theme was adopted by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government during its 38th Ordinary Session held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 2025, and reaffirmed during the 39th Ordinary Session held on 14 February 2026 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The theme was selected to raise awareness among children about the importance of access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene. It also serves to mobilize all stakeholders, including government institutions, development partners, civil society organisations, community leaders, families, and the media, to work collectively towards ensuring that every child in Africa enjoys these fundamental rights.
As parents let’s promote and protect the rights and welfare of children in Africa.🫶🏼🫶🏼

The National Disability Council of Namibia, in collaboration with various sponsors and stakeholders, hosted the National Disability Week celebrations from 09 to 11 June 2026 in the //Karas Region. The award ceremony took place on 11 June 2026 at the Waterfront in Lüderitz.

The event brought together government institutions, development partners, organizations of persons with disabilities, and community members to celebrate the achievements, rights, and inclusion of persons with disabilities in Namibia.

A proud and remarkable moment for the Kunene Region was the recognition received by Mr. Kupi Elganan Kozohura, Coordinator of the Kunene Community-Based Rehabilitation Organisation (CBR) in Opuwo, and Mr. Kaupetua Tjiharuka, Team Leader. The duo received a prestigious Disability Award for being recognized as the Best Service Provider for Persons with Disabilities in the Kunene Region.Their recognition not only brings honor to their organization but also serves as a source of pride and inspiration for the entire Kunene Region.

The stakeholder engagement meeting between NAMWATER and the Kunene Region, held on 04 June 2026 at 09h30, was attended by Mr. George Pieter Kamseb, Chief Regional Officer; Ms. Trully Gau-Goas, Acting Director: General Services; and Mr. Ino Namwoonde, Deputy Director: Planning and Development. The meeting took place at the Kunene Regional Council VIP Boardroom and was productive .

The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism invited the youth and the entire public in Opuwo to attend an information-sharing session as part of the awareness programme leading to the commemoration of the International Day for Biological Diversity on 18 May 2026 at the Ministry of Health and Social Services Hall, Kunene Region.
The programme aimed to raise awareness on the importance of protecting biodiversity, conserving natural resources, and promoting environmental sustainability for present and future generations.
Members of the public were encouraged to attend in large numbers and take part in this important educational initiative. The event was successful

Chairperson Western Muharukua and Deputy Director Finance- Ms. Truly Gau-goas of Kunene Regional Council attended the Official Handover of Decentralized Functions from the Ministry of Youth and Sport to the Regional Councils, which took place from 11–13 May 2026 in Otjiwarongo, Otjozondjupa Region.

During the 4th Special Council Meeting, all Heads of Delegated Functions from various Directorates and Divisions presented reports on their respective activities at the Kunene Regional Council VIP Boardroom. The Directorates represented include DAPEES, MICT, MWT (Maintenance), DEIYSAC, Planning, Human Resources, Finance, and Procurement. Overall, the meeting has been productive and informative.
