"Our 💪🏽, Our 🌍"
Earth Day

Our heritage is increasingly threatened by climate change and ecological degradation, just like our natural environments. As vulnerable as a delicate flower, so too is our heritage.

By preserving our heritage, we are also advocating for the protection of the very environments that shaped it. We hold the power to ensure our planet thrives and our heritage thrives for generations to come.

International Day for Monuments and Sites, celebrated annually on 18 April, reflects on the importance of cultural heritage and aims to promote awareness about its vulnerability and the need to protect and conserve it. This year’s theme is “Emergency Response for Living Heritage in Contexts of Conflicts and Disasters.”

Namibia’s heritage is fragile, once lost, it cannot be replaced. From the ancient rock art, built heritage, and indigenous knowledge, safeguarding these treasures requires not just appreciation, but proactive resilience.

Protecting our heritage is a shared responsibility. Whether it’s preserving our cultural narratives or managing sites against the shifting pressures of the environment, we are committed to ensuring these legacies endure for generations to come.

Do your part in preserving today for tomorrow by visiting heritage sites, keeping traditions alive, and getting involved in heritage matters.

Celebrating the Original Art Form!

Today, on , celebrated under the theme “A Garden of Expression: Cultivating Community through Art”, we’re looking back.

While we celebrate creativity in all its modern forms, let’s take a moment to honour Namibia’s greatest open-air galleries, Twyfelfontein /Ui-//aes and Dâures Brandberg.

Long before modern canvases, the valleys of Twyfelfontein and granite shelters of the Brandberg served as sacred spaces of expression. From the iconic "White Lady", the infamous “Lionman”, to intricate scenes of ritual dances and ancient hunts. These paintings and engravings are more than just art; they are the heartbeat of our history.

These sites stand as a testament to our ancestors' desire to tell stories, mark their presence, and share their understanding of the world, reminding us that the impulse to create is what makes us human.

We take pride in preserving these valuable artworks so that the stories told in stone continue to inspire generations to come.

Let’s keep the creative spirit of our ancestors alive.

Connect with history: Share your favourite memory of discovering these ancient stories.

of when the Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Hon. Dr. Sanet L. Steenkamp, delivered a keynote address in Windhoek at a high-profile stakeholder engagement on our nomination for World Heritage listing.

The Minister emphasized that the process strengthened national capacity and empowered heritage practitioners to lead conservation and nomination efforts.

Namibia’s two existing World Heritage Sites, Namib Sand Sea (2013) and Twyfelfontein /Ui-//aes (2007), were referenced to underscore the importance of strengthening the country’s representation on the World Heritage List.
