Botswana has been listed among countries whose nationals will be required to post a visa bond when applying for certain US visas, starting 1 January 2026. This is according to a notice issued by the US Department of State and published on 17 December 2025.
The policy affects travelers applying for B1/B2 visas, typically used for business and tourism. A visa bond, which is a refundable financial guarantee, aims to ensure that visitors comply with visa terms, particularly that they leave the US before their visa expires.
Citizens from Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Sao Tome and Principe, The Gambia, Zambia, Mauritania, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Turkmenistan, and Bhutan, will now be required to pay a bond of $5,000 (P70 000), $10,000 (P140 000), or $15,000 (P200 000), depending on individual circumstances.
The US government says the measure is part of efforts to improve compliance with immigration laws and reduce visa overstays.
