Why accreditation makes Namibia’s measurements internationally trusted

Happy World Accreditation Day!
You might wonder: who checks the NSI? The answer is accreditation.
NSI’s metrology and calibration services are accredited, which means independent Regional bodies have assessed our laboratories and confirmed that our measurements meet global benchmarks.

This accreditation connects Namibia’s measurement system to the global measurement infrastructure through AFRIMETS and SADCMEL, ensuring that a measurement made in Windhoek is trusted in Johannesburg, Frankfurt, or Beijing.

In trade, health, and safety, internationally recognised measurements open doors.

The Namibian Standards Institution - National committee TC 16 Working group on Menstrual products, participated in the 8th ISO/TC 338 Menstrual Products Meeting held in Accra during the period 20/04/2026 to 24/04/2026.

The work of ISO/TC 338 focused on the development of international standards for menstrual products to ensure safety, quality, performance, and accessibility.

The committee aims to harmonize requirements and best practices across countries, thereby ensuring that menstrual products meet globally accepted levels of safety and effectiveness.

The work of ISO/TC 338 is crucial in promoting inclusive and equitable access to safe menstrual health products worldwide. Namibia’s participation in this global initiative is important as it provides an opportunity to contribute national perspectives and experiences while aligning national standards with international best practices.

Such participation further supports the strengthening of public health systems, promotes consumer protection, empowers communities, and contributes towards improved access to essential hygiene products for all.

Here’s a question: how do you KNOW your morning coffee mug holds exactly 250ml?

Or that the 1kg of mince at your butcher really weighs 1kg?
The answer is METROLOGY, the science of measurement and at NSI, it’s one of our most critical services.

The NSI Metrology Department is Namibia’s official metrology agency, mandated under the Metrology Act to ensure every measurement in Namibia is accurate, fair, and traceable to international standards.

Drop a comment: what measurement do you rely on most in your daily life?

The National Workshop on the ePing SPS and TBT Platform has officially commenced!

Hosted by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Secretariat in collaboration with the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy, and proudly coordinated by the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI), this vital three-day engagement kicks off in Windhoek at the Avani Hotel and will conclude at the NSI Testing and Inspection Centre in Walvis Bay on 22 May.

Delivering the opening remarks on behalf of Mr. Moses Pakote, Executive Director at the Ministry of Industries Mines and Energy, was Mr. Penda Nghaamwa, the Director General Services at the Ministry of Industries Mines and Energy. His address set a strong foundation for the sessions ahead. We are also honored to have Camille Fléchet from the WTO Secretariat facilitating and guiding these important trade discussions.

This workshop is designed to train and engage both public and private sector stakeholders including SMEs on leveraging the ePing platform. Jointly established by the WTO, ITC, and UNDESA, ePing is an essential global tool designed to help businesses track and navigate evolving Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) and Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) requirements.

Funded by the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF), this initiative aims to enhance clarity, predictability, and regulatory coordination. By increasing the uptake of the ePing platform, we are working to improve transparency for market access and ultimately strengthen Namibia’s position in international trade.
