Work Intensified at Abia Airport Runway, as Media team Tours the Airport Project Siite

Work at the Abia International Airport ,a joint project of the Abia state and federal governments in Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area,is being intensified as work on the runway advances speedily.

Answering questions from Newsmen during an inspection tour of the site by a Team from the state government in collaboration with journalists, in continuation of the inspection tour by members of the Renewed Hope Presidential Media Team, the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr Chaka Chukwumerije, stated that the land for the airport project which occupies one thousand and twenty five hectares of land was acquired by the Abia State Government on behalf of the Federal Government.

He disclosed that the project which was initially conceived as a cargo airport, was subsequently upgraded to an international airport following the intervention of the state government.

According to the Land Commissioner "The initial intention was to build a cargo airport but with the intervention of the Abia State Government it was upgraded to an international airport"

He noted that while the Abia State Government is responsible for the construction of the runway, the Federal Government is expected to handle the terminal building, noting that land owners within the runway have been fully compensated.

"For the land acquisition, we have far gone in the payment of compensation. Compensation for everybody whose land acquired within the runway has been completed.

"The surrounding land around the runway, we are actively paying compensation and will soon complete the process" Mr Chukwumerije noted.

Contributing, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Lands and Housing who doubles as the Airport Coordinator, Pastor Okorougo Aji, explained that the three-kilometre runway had been cleared with extensive construction activities, including cutting, filling and compacting in progress.

Pastor Aji while also noting that earthwork on nearly one kilometre of the runway is nearing completion, expressed optimism that the airport would be completed within the next two years and described the airport project as a dream gradually becoming a reality as many had earlier doubted its feasibility.

Also speaking, the site Engineer, Mr Yusuf Tawk, said work is progressing despite the challenges posed by the rainy season, assuring that the company will work towards realizing the project on schedule.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities Mr Ikechukwu Monday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, and other senior government officials, including the Permanent secretary ministry of Information Sir Chris Onwuegbu joined members of the Media Team on the inspection tour.

The airport project when completed, is expected to contribute in opening the state to investors and expanding the tourism potentials of the state.

Today in Lagos, I had the honour of unveiling two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft by United Nigeria Airlines, named in recognition of two exceptional sons of Nigeria: the late Professor Chinua Achebe, the globally celebrated literary icon, and His Royal Majesty, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, CFR, the Obi of Onitsha.

I commend the Chairman and Founder of United Nigeria Airlines, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, for this thoughtful gesture of immortalising individuals whose contributions have profoundly shaped our society. Honouring excellence and service inspires future generations and strengthens our collective national identity.

The acquisition of these aircraft is a testament to the growing confidence in Nigeria’s aviation sector and the resilience of indigenous enterprises. I also applaud the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, for his reform-driven leadership and commitment to creating an enabling environment for private-sector participation in the industry.

I particularly welcome ongoing efforts to strengthen local airlines through innovative initiatives such as aircraft leasing arrangements, which will enhance competitiveness, improve access to aviation assets, and support sustainable growth across the sector.

I also appreciate the Minister’s continued support for the Abia Airport project. I am pleased to report that work on the runway has reached an advanced stage, and our administration remains fully committed to delivering a world-class aviation facility that will expand economic opportunities, improve connectivity, and position Abia as a strategic hub for commerce and investment.

I congratulate United Nigeria Airlines on this milestone and wish the airline greater success as it continues to contribute to national development, create jobs, and strengthen Nigeria’s aviation industry.

Congratulations once again to Professor Obiora Okonkwo, the management of United Nigeria Airlines, and all stakeholders whose vision and dedication made this achievement possible.

*ENGR CHINEDU ONYEIZU'S DEMOCRACY DAY MESSAGE*

Fellow Nigerians,
As we commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day, I join millions of Nigerians in celebrating the enduring spirit of democracy, freedom, and the collective will of our people.

This day reminds us that democracy is not merely about elections and political offices; it is about justice, accountability, inclusion, and the unwavering commitment to building a nation where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive.

While we acknowledge the challenges confronting our country, we must remain hopeful and united in our determination to create a better future. The strength of our democracy lies in the active participation of citizens, the integrity of our institutions, and our shared commitment to the ideals of good governance.

I urge Nigerians, especially the younger generation, to continue engaging constructively in the democratic process and to uphold the values of patriotism, tolerance, and national unity.

As we celebrate this important day, let us renew our faith in Nigeria and work together to building a nation that reflects the dreams and aspirations of all its people.

Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria.

I am,

Engr. Chinedu Onyeizu
