Abeokuta Export Assistance Office has adopted Export Incubation Facility [EIF] as a strategy for upscaling export performance in Ogun state. Pursuant to that, advocacy visit were embarked in september 2019 to Technology Incubation centres in Abeokuta, Odogbolu and Owode in Ogun state to seek collaboration of the Management and Staff in the realisation of the objective.

In order to kick start the process, the Trade Promotion Advisor [Abeokuta Export Assistance Office], S.A. Idowu with TPO1 [PMD] Juwon Iranloye paid a working visit to Technology Incubation Centre, Abeokuta. The main purpose of the visit was to outline the immediate and long term action plan for ensuring transition of operators from the centre to domestic & export market and vice versa. the meeting laid foundation for achieving low hanging fruits.

The Trade Promotion Advisor [Abeokuta Export Assistance Office], S.A. Idowu with TPO1 [PMD] Juwon Iranloye paid a working visit to Technology Incubation Centre, Abeokuta.

Cashew

Cashew tree produces two main edible products; Cashew nut and Cashew apple
The nut is composed of kernel and pericacarp or shell.
Cashew nuts are the world’s second widely traded dessert nuts
Africa utilize about 6% of about 6 million MT produce per year

CASHEW POST-HARVEST HANDLING

HARVESTING
Harvesting starts mainly in February or March
Harvest period occupies about 16 weeks
For quality, nuts are allowed to drop to the ground and hand picked
Nut and apple are separated with a twisting action during collection

DRYING
Nuts are dried in the sun for 2 to 3 days, to 12 % moisture content
Drying on concrete/slate drying yards.
Uniform drying achieved by constantly turning over the nuts.
Remnants of the apple flesh adhering to the nuts removed with sharp knife

GRADING/SORTING
Nuts are sorted according to the weight;
Jumbo Nuts; 16 and above g/nut
Extra Large; 12 -15.9g/nut
Large nuts; 8 – 11.9g/nut
Medium nuts; 4 – 7.9g/nut
Small nuts; 2 – 3.9g/nut
Madras; < 2.0g/nut
