ENVIRONMENTAL INFRACTIONS -OGUN SHUT THREE MORE INDUSTRIES.

As part of its continued efforts at laying solid foundation for environmental best practices in the state, Ogun State government has shut three companies for various environmental infractions.

The companies are Ruili Recycling Limited,Mowe, Robust International PTE Limited also in Mowe and Star Pipe Limited, Sagamu.
In ordering their closure, Commissioner for Environment,Ola Oresanya said Ruili Recycling- pet bottles recycling company was found guilty of discharging its wastes and storm water into their immediate environment especially in the premises of Christopher University which exposed the students to avoidable danger as well as its refusal to obtain a drainage approval to properly channel the unwanted water to appropriate place

Aside from this, the company was also discovered to be burning all its solid wastes within its premises contrary to the state's Environmental Laws thereby exposing its workers and residents of its immediate communities to toxic and hazardous pollution as well as operating in filthy environment.
For Robust International PTE, Oresanya said the company illegally demolished a fence bounding them with the same Christopher University so as to reclaim some portion of land and subsequently divert all storm water to the premises of the institution as well as their failure to heed government's directives for proper remediation.

He therefore said the state government will not fold its hands and watch the two industries expose the students of the institution and residents of their immediate communities to suffer from their careless environmental infractions while they feel unconcerned.
For Star Pipe Limited, Sagamu,Oresanya said the company was shut after they refused entreaties to install effluent treatment plants into their facilities as they discharge raw and hydrolic acid into their immediate environment.
This he said has led to contamination of ground water of these communities which has made the water unsafe and unhygienic.

The Commissioner added that the three companies will remain shut until they correct all the lapses detected...

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION,OGUN SHUT ANOTHER INDUSTRY.

As part of its continued efforts at enthroning proper environmental governance in the state, the Ogun State government has shut an agro- processing company, Supreme Agro Limited in Igbesa, Ado Odo Local Government Area for serious industrial pollution that have destroyed the ecosystem of their host community.

In ordering the closure of the company after several complaints from the Igbesa Community and subsequent verification and warnings by the Ogun State Environmental Task Force, Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya said the company despite their earlier denial was found guilty of industrial pollution as it discharges its untreated waste water into the community which has greatly affected the well-being of residents of the area.
According to the Commissioner, rather than installing effluent plants that would contain the waste water and remove the hazardous components and restore it back to a safe level before discharging them to surrounding water bodies, the company bye- passed the plant and discharge the waste water directly into the community which not constitute an eyesore but impacted negatively on the environment.
"This is a very selfish and callous behavior on the part of the company because these waste water have hazardous components such as heavy metals in them as well as carcinogenic materials and chemicals which when they get to the environment becomes injurious to the people leading to unwarranted deaths "
"The state government will not look away from such behavior which will impact on the well-being on the residents of their host community " Oresanya submitted.
He therefore said that the company will remained shut until it restores the environment back to normal and be more responsible in their production processes and carry their host community along with their level of remediation.

The Commissioner also praised the Igbesa Traditional Council for notifying the state government of the unethical environmental practices of the company urging other councils, communities, residents and public spirited individuals to join the state government in enthroning proper environmental governance statewide.

Oresanya also used the opportunity to warn companies operating in the state that while the government will continue to provide enabling environment for them to operate as the industrial capital of the country,it will not tolerate any carelessness in their production processes adding that they must be straight and do the right things all the times as the state government will always reward companies that operate in accordance to global environmental best practices.

The , through on Friday, 27th October, 23 had shut a recycling company, Maths Metal Recycling Limited, in the Sagamu area of Ogun State, for deliberate industrial pollution which exposed residents to danger.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said the company was issued several warnings for polluting the environment with contaminated oil but they refused to seek caution.

The recycling company punctured a passage at the back of its premises to discharge the waste to the environment instead of installing retention tanks within the company, where the bad oil and other solvents were supported to be treated.

Oresanya said, “By doing this, the management of Maths Metal has not only caused pollution but has also committed a criminal act that is punishable under the Ogun State Environmental Sanitation Laws as their deliberate action has adversely affected residents of community living around them.
The state government will now have to establish the extent of damage done to the well-being of members of the community especially the percolation of the contaminated oil on their underground water”, Oresanya added.

According to him, the state government will determine if the situation of the polluted environment can be corrected after strict assessments and the recycling company will foot the bill for the course, while other disciplinary actions may be considered as a deterrent.

He also reiterates government resolve to backlist consultants that connived with the company to commit the infractions and threatened to report them to the Federal Government authorities for possible nationwide sanctions.

Oresanya also warned other industries and environmental violators to desist from the illegal act as it would not be business as usual again in the state. He made it known that the state government would not shy away from protecting her residents especially the vulnerable ones from any environmental hazards.

The release of toxic chemicals in the environment disturbs the ecological balance and badly affects flora and fauna in the large area.
Chemicals in gaseous form in the environment give rise to problems of air pollution and health issues if inhaled, acid rain, monumental corrosion, etc.
A chemical spill in water bodies is a major threat to aquatic/marine life.
Let's Act Rightly Now!

27/11/2022

The importance of understanding of safety handling of chemicals helps to improve knowledge and adherence to safer practices and reduces exposure to chemicals. Chemical safety training is essential for protecting human health from potential hazards posed by chemicals, in manufacturing or other industries.
It also helps to protect communities from releases of toxic or flammable chemicals that are prone to cause immediate, serious harm to public and environmental health.
