Chief Obafemi Awolowo won accolades as an innovator and welfare- state builder as premier. He left indelible marks as his legacy which are still visible for succeeding generations to admire. His accomplishments as head of government have been unmatched since he left office in Ibadan in 1959. His outstanding performance as a federal minister of finance, 1967-1971, consolidated his sterling reputation and contributed immensely to the rapid conclusion of the civil war in 1970. He was envied and he attracted many political foes across Nigeria because he worked so tirelessly for the uplift of Yoruba people who elected him to the office. Chief Obafemi Awolowo is a preacher of socialism, he regarded the whole multi-ethnic country as his parish. They tried to eclipse his political career by framing him with treasonanle felony in 1962. Because he was firm and immovable on principles, some of his contemporaries said he was dogmatic and rigid. In spirit and in pursuit of his political objectives, he was truly indefatigable. His party was the first to publish its political manifesto in Nigeria and earned his reputation as the man with the plan. He was a charismatic leader who commanded great respect among his followers. He was the most outstanding stateman of his era. He will remembered for his democratic credentials, his outstanding vision, sagacity and as a beacon of good hope to future generations for his statemanship, consistency, doggedness, steadfastness, transparency, dedication to duty and honesty of purpose.
Nigeria has been a country of many nations where the tribe and tongue ( rather than ability ) determine political fortunes since inception in 1914. Chief Awolowo knew sound education was the bedrock of development for any egalitarian society. Awolowo was a prudent manager of the economy and he was in love with technological advance and science.
I expect those in position of power in this country to emulate from Awo's school of political economy of positive transformation by avoiding practicing of culture of impunity that led our beloved nation to where we are today. I expect our political office holders to consider a good political acumen as a yardstick of promoting our national value through formulation and implementation of good policies that will redeem our national image globally and put food on table of citizenry.
Therefore, say no to corruption and imbibe chief Obafemi Awolowo political ideology.
