The Federal Character Commission welcomed Dr. (Mrs.) Funke Femi Adepoju, Director General of the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), on a courtesy visit on Friday, 28 August 2026.

With ASCON’s longstanding role in public-sector training, research and management development, the visit opened a valuable exchange on building stronger institutions, developing capable public servants and translating administrative excellence into better service for citizens.

The Federal Character Commission received Mr. Akinola Odeyemi, MD/CEO of Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET), who led a delegation of senior officials on a courtesy visit to the Commission on Friday, 28 August 2026.

The visit brought NBET and the Commission together for an exchange on institutional priorities, collaboration and the role of equitable representation in building stronger public institutions.

The Federal Character Commission successfully convened its 327th Plenary Session on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, under the leadership of the Executive Chairman, Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran.

The session reviewed key institutional activities, strategic initiatives, upcoming engagements and priorities for strengthening the Commission’s mandate.

The meeting also reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to effective service delivery, digital transformation, equity and continuous improvement in its operations.

Across two days in Abuja, the Federal Character Commission, in partnership with the Progressive Governors Forum, brought Local Government Chairmen together for critical conversations on strengthening grassroots governance through fairness, equity and inclusion.

From national unity and equal opportunities to equitable access to government services, resources and infrastructure, the workshop explored what it takes to make the Federal Character Principle work where governance meets the people.

The message throughout was clear: fairness cannot remain a principle on paper. It must be reflected in how communities are governed, how opportunities are shared and how citizens experience government.

A stronger Nigeria begins with fairer communities.

At the Federal Character Commission and Progressive Governors Forum National Workshop, Prof. Wahab O. Egbewole, SAN, of the University of Ilorin, shared practical insights on implementing the Federal Character principle within local government administration.

He noted that Nigeria’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths, but the real challenge is ensuring that policies promoting national integration are reflected in how governance is experienced at the grassroots.

He outlined practical guidelines to help Local Government Chairmen navigate recruitment, administration and equitable development, while addressing issues such as political patronage, indigene-settler tensions and resource limitations.

The goal is clear: turning the principle of fairness into everyday governance.

Government may operate across different levels, but to the citizen, it is one experience.

At the PGF-FCC National Workshop, Folorunso S. Aluko, Director General of the Progressive Governors Forum, stressed that the true measure of governance is not where responsibility sits, but whether the citizen is served.

Cooperative autonomy strengthens that connection, allowing local authorities to function effectively while working together to deliver development where it matters most.

Because governance is ultimately measured by what people can see, access and experience.

Represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, CON, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu charged Local Government Chairmen to uphold fairness, equity and inclusiveness in appointments, administration, and the distribution of opportunities and resources.

The President emphasized that Nigeria’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths and urged Local Government leaders to rise above sectional interests, placing national unity, fairness and inclusion at the centre of governance.

As the tier of government closest to the people, Local Governments have a critical responsibility to ensure that governance is representative, transparent and equitable.
When every segment of society feels represented and valued, we strengthen social cohesion, reduce conflict and create an environment where economic growth, innovation and shared prosperity can thrive.

The workshop reinforced the need to move Federal Character from principle to practice, ensuring that fairness and inclusion are reflected in governance where it matters most , at the grassroots.
