MINING MARSHALS RALLY KADUNA COMMUNITY AGAINST ILLEGAL TIN MINERS

* Deploys Community Engagement, Diplomacy to Dislodge lllegal Operators

In a deft move, the Mining Marshals have successfully shut down an illegal mining site in Damau, Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna State, using a blend of community engagement and diplomacy.

The operation focused on a tin-rich site legally owned by Trobell Minerals Limited, which had been occupied by illegal miners for several months. Community members reported that the activities had caused significant economic losses, environmental degradation, and heightened insecurity in the area.

Departing from the norm of confrontational enforcement, the Marshals prioritized dialogue—consulting with traditional leaders and mobilizing local support. This approach led to the peaceful exit of the illegal miners under official supervision without incident.

“The diplomatic approach is commendable. The activities of the dislodged illegal miners posed a serious threat to lives, livelihoods, and investment. This intervention brings long-awaited relief,” a respected community leader stated.

Speaking during commemoration of the first anniversary of the Mining Marshals' recently, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to empowering the squad for greater effectiveness. “The reward for hard work is more work,” he told the operatives, pledging additional resources and operational support.

The peaceful resolution in Damau contrasts with previous clashes at illegal sites in other parts of the country, where enforcement operations have often turned confrontational.

The minister urges communities across the country to support efforts of the federal government to stamp out illegal mining, suing for cooperation with the mining marshals to fish out culprits.

" The Kaduna operation could serve as a model for future interventions if we get the buy-in of locals and community leaders. Illegal mining and insecurity remain major obstacles to the development of the mining sector. However, the outcome in Damau offers a glimpse of how a mix of enforcement and dialogue can turn the tide. I urge communities to cooperate with us to deal with this menace and restore investor confidence in the sector, " Dr. Alake added.

FG TO BOOST VALUE ADDITION WITH MORE JEWELRY MAKING CENTRES - ALAKE

The federal government has reiterated its commitment to establishing more gemstone and jewellery-making centres across the country to boost entrepreneurship in the mining industry and support the local value addition policy.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake made this disclosure during a tour of the Laurel School of Mines in Abuja. He commended the centre for leading the way in training jewelry and gemstone makers, expressing satisfaction with the quality of the jewelry produced. He emphasized that the products are comparable to the best on the international market.

According to him, "From our raw materials such as gold, sapphire, gemstones, and the likes, we are now seeing finished products—jewelry—being created at this centre. That is value addition. This is a significant contribution to our mining industry, which has the potential to provide employment for our youth, drive industrialization of the sector, and generate more revenue for the country."

The Minister reiterated the Federal Government's commitment to strengthening production at the centre and assured that more such centres will be established across the country once the 2025 budget implementation begins.

He also highlighted the importance of increasing jewelry production, not just to meet local demand, but also for export purposes, noting that this sector has the potential to become a major foreign exchange earner for the country.

In his remarks, the MD/CEO of Laurel School of Mines, Tope Adebanjo, expressed gratitude to the Ministry for its support, stressing that the ongoing Batch 4 Advanced Master Class training would not have been possible without the Ministry's assistance.

He also outlined plans to further develop entrepreneurs in Nigeria’s gemstones and jewelry industry and requested continued support from Dr. Alake to ensure maximum utilization of the centre’s equipment to foster the growth of mining entrepreneurs who will create wealth and employment opportunities for the nation's youth.

The Minister welcomed the initiative and directed Mr. Adebanjo to submit a detailed proposal to the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Mary Ogbe, for further action.

The Laurel School of Mines is a professional training facility dedicated to the development of the gem and jewelry industry. It focuses on mining, exploration, and manufacturing of high-quality gemstones and jewelry, with support from the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development (MSMD).

MINING MARSHALS DISMANTLE ILLEGAL MINING STRONGHOLD IN NASARAWA

In a significant step towards curbing illegal mining, the Mining Marshals have successfully dismantled a heavily fortified illegal mining site in Rafin Gabas, Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The site, which had long evaded law enforcement, was reportedly protected by compromised security personnel.

However, following a strategic and well-coordinated operation, the Mining Marshals penetrated the stronghold, leading to the arrest of three foreign nationals involved in the nefarious activities. Several other suspects managed to flee, allegedly with the help of security operatives.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake commended the operation, calling it a major breakthrough in the government's ongoing fight against illegal mining. "This is a crucial milestone in our tireless efforts to sanitize the mining sector. We are committed to cracking down on illegal mining operations and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable," Alake stated.

ACC. John Attah Onoja, Commander of the Mining Marshals, confirmed that the site has been sealed off following the raid. "A manhunt is currently underway for the suspects who escaped, and investigations are ongoing to identify any security personnel involved in facilitating these illegal activities," he added.

Onoja further disclosed that the company behind the illegal operations, along with some of the suspects on the run, have pending criminal charges in the Federal High Court, Abuja.

It is worth noting that during the one-year anniversary of the Mining Marshals recently, the Minister reiterated the government's commitment to eradicating illegal mining. He announced plans to enhance the operational capacity of the Mining Marshals through satellite monitoring of mining sites, as well as the provision of state-of-the-art equipment, amongst others.

PRESS RELEASE

FG LIFTS BAN ON MINERAL EXPLORATION IN ZAMFARA

After more than five years of security restriction, the Federal Government has lifted the ban on mining exploration activities in Zamfara State, citing significant improvements in the security situation across the state.

Making the announcement during a press briefing at the weekend, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake stated that the nation has a lot to gain from reawakened economic activities in a highly mineralised state like Zamfara that is imbued with vast gold, Lithium, and copper belts. He noted that the previous ban, which was good intentioned, inadvertently created a vacuum exploited by illegal miners to fleece the nation of its resources. He emphasized that the state’s potential for contributing to national revenue is enormous.

It will be recalled that in 2019, the federal government imposed a total ban on mining activities in Zamfara State due to the escalating security concerns, particularly the links between banditry and illegal mining.

Since the beginning of the Tinubu administration, however, intelligence-driven, coordinated security operations have resulted in the neutralization of key bandit commanders, significantly reducing incidents of insecurity. A recent success was the capture of one of the most wanted bandit commanders, Halilu Sububu, in a covert operation in Zamfara.

"The existential threat to lives and properties that led to the 2019 ban has abated. The security operatives' giant strides have led to a notable reduction in the level of insecurity, and with the ban on exploration lifted, Zamfara’s mining sector can gradually begin contributing to the nation’s revenue pool," Alake asserted.

The minister added that the lifting of the ban would also facilitate better regulation of mining activities in the state. This will enable more effective intelligence gathering to combat illegal mining and ensure the country benefits from the state’s rich mineral resources.

Commending members of the fourth estate of the realm for championing the propagation of reforms and initiatives of the ministry in 2024, Alake noted that the press have been key allies in efforts to sanitise the mining sector, and promote market reforms which have made the industry attractive to indigenous and foreign investors.

On the recent controversy surrounding the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with France, Alake reaffirmed the Federal Government's position that the agreement does not imply Nigeria is relinquishing control over its mineral resources or entering into any military pact with France. He emphasized that Nigeria’s military remains fully capable of safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity.

"The high point of the MOU is on training and capacity building for our mining professionals. We need all the assistance we can get in terms of capacity, technical, and financial support from abroad, and that wasn't even the first we are signing. We've signed similar ones with Germany and Australia. Deliberate peddling of misinformation, despite facts to the contrary, is uncalled for, "the minister emphasised.

Dr. Alake also urged the media to continue to play its crucial role in educating the public about government policies in order to prevent ignorance, mischief, and the spread of misinformation.

Looking ahead to 2025, the minister hinted at upcoming policy initiatives aimed at revitalizing the mining sector. He revealed that the ministry plans to further consolidate reforms, enhance the enabling environment for investments, and continue efforts to reposition the sector for long-term, sustainable growth.

ALAKE COMMISSIONS STATE-OF-THE-ART MINERALS ANALYSIS LAB*

* Says Lab Aligns with FG's Local Value Addition Policy_

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake has described African Natural Resources and Mines Limited (ANRML) as a valuable partner in the federal government's efforts to promote local value addition in the mining sector.

Speaking at the commissioning of the ultra-modern mineral analysis laboratory in Sabon-Wuse, Niger State, Alake emphasized that the lab, the first of its kind in Nigeria, aligns with the key objectives of repositioning the mining sector in line with his 7-point agenda.

"You are not only aligning with the President's Renewed Hope Agenda but also contributing to our ministry’s 7-point agenda, with local value addition being a critical component. This internationally certified lab will significantly benefit the sector, as it will handle mineral samples that were previously sent abroad for testing, positioning Nigeria as a key player in global mineral analysis," the minister stated.

Commending ANRML’s initiative, the minister urged the company, which also operates an iron ore mining and processing plant, to sustain its investment efforts, pledging the support of the Federal government for investments that will generate jobs for teeming youths in the country.

In his remarks, the Group Managing Director (GMD) of ANRML, Alok Gupta, expressed his gratitude to the minister for commissioning the laboratory and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to partnering with the ministry to revolutionize the country’s mining landscape.

"The world-class laboratory commissioned today will be used to analyze solid mineral samples. Recognizing the need for such a facility in Nigeria, we decided to establish this laboratory using the latest technology. I am proud to announce that we are the only company in Nigeria certified with the prestigious ISO 7025 from the Canadian Association of Laboratory Abbreviations and other internationally recognized accreditation bodies for testing laboratories," Mr. Gupta asserted.

The ANRML laboratory, equipped with cutting-edge WDXRF machines, offers a comprehensive range of geochemical services tailored for the exploration and mining industries.

PRESS RELEASE

NIGERIA, FRANCE SIGN MOU ON CRITICAL MINERALS

Nigeria and France have agreed to develop joint projects to promote and diversify the critical minerals value chain in the solid minerals sector of both countries.

Critical minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, and rare earth elements are essential to clean energy technologies.

In the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by both countries on the sidelines of the official visit to France by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently, both countries agreed to collaborate on research, training and Franco-Nigerian students exchanges for knowledge and skills transfer.

A key component of the MOU is the promotion of sustainable mining activities by executing projects and programmes that reduce the environmental impact of mining on carbon emissions, water consumption, and climate change.

It also includes the establishment of joint excrative and processing projects through co-financing by public and private entities to diversify and secure the supply of critical minerals and decarbonise energy projects critical to the value chain.

Dr. Alake signed for Nigeria while the Inter-Ministerial delegate for Critical Ores and Metals of the Republic of France, Mr Benjamin Gallezot, signed on behalf of France.

Both nations agreed to adopt international best practices in the ex*****on of projects conceptualised to improve the conditions of the local populace affected by mining whilst placing premium on transparency.

The MOU is expected to open new opportunities for the remediation of over 2,000 abandoned pits in the country through its plan to intervene in environmental rehabilitation and post-mining projects.

Through regular bilateral and multilateral training, seminars, and events, administrators of institutions in the critical metals sector are expected to improve their capacity to manage the sector's value chain.

Describing the deal as a boost to the efforts of the Tinubu administration to reposition Nigeria's solid minerals sector for international competitiveness, Alake stressed that the ministry would leverage the partnership to open up the mining sector to French investors.
