The National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) is a body corporate established under the NICRAT act of 2017 in recognition of the need for a more coordinated and multi-sectoral response to the growing cancer burden in Nigeria. Vision
To build a Cancer Prevention, Treatment and Control Hub of international repute. Mission
To provide leadership, regulatory framework with coordinat

ed awareness campaigns in cancer prevention and control through prompt diagnosis and treatment, research and development by mobilization of highly motivated and trained Human Resources while maintaining the National Cancer Registry. The Institute Shall
Provide national leadership in cancer research, treatment and control. Guide scientific improvement to cancer prevention, treatment and cure. Coordinate and liaise within the wide range of groups and health care providers with interest in cancer. Make recommendations to the government about cancer policies and priorities. Assist with the implementation of Government policies and programmes in cancer control. Provide financial assistance, out of money appropriated by the National Assembly for research and treatment and for the implementation of policies and programs mentioned in (F) of this subsection. The Institute may carry out such other activities as are necessary or expedient for the full performance of any of the functions of the Institute under this Act. Objectives of the Institute
The strategic focus of the Institute as enshrined in the Act are as follows;

Regulating and Enhancing Access to Cancer Care in Nigeria
Research and Development in Cancer Prevention and Control
Resource Mobilization for Cancer Prevention and Control
Establishing and Maintaining a Cancer Registry
Public Education and Awareness Creation in Cancer
Capacity Development in Cancer Prevention and Control.

Today, the Director-General/CEO of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, held a strategic meeting with the National Coordinator of the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC), Dr. Abdu Mukhtar, to discuss pathways for strengthening cancer care and advancing healthcare transformation in Nigeria.

The meeting focused on deepening collaboration in key areas critical to improving cancer outcomes nationwide, including:
🔹 Leveraging data-driven decision-making to strengthen cancer control efforts
🔹 Expanding access to quality prevention, diagnosis, and oncology treatment services
🔹 Reducing dependence on medical tourism through improved local healthcare capacity
🔹 Strengthening local manufacturing and innovation across the healthcare value chain

These priorities align with the four-pillar health sector agenda championed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships, collaboration, and coordinated action in transforming Nigeria’s healthcare system and reducing the growing cancer burden across the country.

𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹, 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲.

That was the message Nigeria brought to the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, where our Director General, Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, chaired a high-level panel session on Financing Cancer Care alongside Ministers, policymakers, and global health leaders like UICC President elect Dr. Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu.

The panel tackled one of the most urgent questions in global health today: how to sustainably finance cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment in an era of shrinking fiscal space and competing priorities.

Nigeria's leadership highlighted practical pathways already being implemented:
• Financial protection mechanisms for cancer patients
• Expansion of screening services
• Innovative access partnerships
• Nigeria's HPV vaccination campaign one of the largest HPV vaccine introductions globally, and the largest single-round HPV vaccination campaign in Africa.

A key message from the discussion was clear: cancer financing must no longer be treated as optional, but as an essential pillar of Universal Health Coverage.

The dialogue also reinforced the importance of stronger collaboration across Governments, development partners, and the Commonwealth to drive pooled procurement, technical support, and sustainable financing solutions for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Grateful for the leadership, vision, and commitment being demonstrated to advance equitable cancer care globally.
