ASUP GAMES 2023 KICKOFF
...As Communication Arts FC and Environmental FC ends in a stalemate.

As the maiden edition of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Akwa-Ibom State Polytechnic Chapter Games kick-start with a football encounter, the School of Communication Arts and School of Environmental Studies playout ended in an entertaining 1-1 draw.

The event which took place on Wednesday, May 24th at the school's football pitch resulted in a stalemate with bragging rights on the line and the fear of defeat to each other.

Idorenyin Umoh of the School of Communication Arts gave his team the lead when he hit the back of the net with a long shot 25 minutes after the commencement of proceedings while Stone Itiat of the School of Environmental Studies equalized from the spot-kick before the half hour mark following a penalty that was awarded for a minor infringement by the center referee.

Both teams had, however, created few notable chances in a drab performance amidst the heavy downpour, without a clear goal and victory.

BREAKING: ASUP Threatens To Go On Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has warned state governments owing lecturers several months of salaries to pay up immediately or face industrial action.

The President of the union, Anderson Ezeibe, at the 106th meeting of the National Executive Council held in Abuja on Wednesday, vowed to ensure that all members owed by the government are paid before the expiration of their administrations on May 29.

Speaking in an angry tone, the president condemned the governors, noting that it is a sad commentary that academics are owed salaries in the current economic dispensation.

The president specifically mentioned that its members in Abia state institutions are currently owed salaries for over 40 months.

He also noted that its members are also owed in Plateau, Osun, Benue, Edo and Ondo state polytechnics.

He said, “As a union, our responsibility to our employer is to come to work, perform our duties, and leave with the hope that at the end of the month, our employers will behave themselves and pay us our emoluments in full.

“The union is unhappy with the situation and requests that salaries are paid immediately or face massive industrial actions or shut down the institution till the state is ready to fund the polytechnics.”

ASUP May Extend Strike By Another Two weeks – President

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) may extend its ongoing two-week warning strike by two weeks if the government fails to meet its demands.

ASUP President, Anderson Ezeibe, who disclosed this recently, said the government had met only two of the five key demands of the union.

Demands met by the government are the payment of minimum wage arrears for the polytechnic lecturers and the release of a normative instrument for institutional accreditation, a policy document for international standards.

Key demands not met, according to him, are the release of the N15 billion revitalization fund, which he said President Muhammadu Buhari approved last year, and the release of a scheme of service.

He also said the government was yet to respond to the group’s outcry against the victimization of ASUP members in the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu.

“If the government doesn’t meet all the demands within these weeks, we’ll declare a two-week indefinite action. Our next NEC meeting is in June. When we meet in June, we’ll take the next line of action.”

Polytechnic Lecturers Plan Indefinite Strike From June

___________

The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Anderson Ezeibe has said if the Federal Government fails to meet the union’s demands by June, it may declare indefinite strike action.

Anderson said the National Executive Council would meet in June after the expiration of the union’s two-week warning strike and may declare a total strike.

The ASUP President lamented that the government failed to honour its agreements almost one year after it signed a Memorandum of Action with the union.

He said, “We call the attention of the Nigerian government and the public to the level of irresponsibility being displayed by agencies of government and functionaries of government in these agencies on our issues. What we are seeing is a clear absence of commitment by the government.

“The meeting was more or less for mobilisation as you know we are on strike, and our members need to get the right perspective on the issue.

“So, the meeting essentially was to raise the morale of our members, explain the issues with them and encourage them to stand firm.

“Our members should be prepared for more strikes; this is just a two-week definite strike; it also means that we can recommend the strike, depending on the government’s decision. That is why I am telling my members to be ready.”

JUST IN: ASUP Set To Embark On Nationwide Strike May 11

Less than 12 hours after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) extended their ongoing strike action by three months, its Polytechnics counterpart, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, (ASUP) has announced its plan to commence a nationwide strike action from May 11, 2022.

The action, according to the union, is based on the Federal Government’s failure to implement the Memorandum of Action (MoA) reached with the union in May, 2021.

Mr Precious Nwakodo, the Zonal Coordinator of Zone D which comprises of South South and South East, announced the planned action at a press conference held at the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo
state on Monday.

Nwakodo said the planned strike action was hinged on the yet to be met demands among which are the non release of the N15 billion Revatilization Fund approved over a year for the sector to address infrastructural deficit as contained in the 2014 Needs Assessment Report.

According to him, “Following the discouraging response of the government to the one month notice of ultimatum which ended five days ago, 4th of May precisely, the NEC of the union will be meeting in two days time at Abuja to review the situation and take a decision on the planned strike,”.

We Are Close To The Declaration Of A Fresh Round Of Trade Dispute With The Government – ASUP President

He said;

“As we all know, we are currently at the table, renegotiating our 2010 agreement to principally secure better compensation packages for our members, as well as secure a future for the sector through the mist in our tertiary education landscape.

We will not be deterred by the series of betrayals by governments at different levels as seen in the culture of non respect for signed agreements as we shall continue to explore creative ways of holding to account, an increasingly conscienceless ruling political class on their social obligations to Nigerians particularly in the area of skill based education.

This is the principal reason why we are once again close to the declaration of a fresh round of trade dispute with the government. This process we shall pursue with utmost sense of responsibility.

As we continue to engage the government, we appeal for your continued support and prayers as this has been the source of our strength and motivation in times past.”
