On 26 August, Ms. TAKAHASHI Misako, Director-General and Assistant Minister of the African Affairs Department at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and H.E. Ambassador SUZUKI Hideo paid a courtesy call on Ms. Beatrice Eyong, UN Women Nigeria Country Representative 🤝

They discussed Nigeria’s gender equality priorities, UN Women’s efforts on women’s leadership, economic empowerment, and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention, as well as collaboration with Japanese private sectors. Ms. TAKAHASHI expressed appreciation and noted Japan’s continued cooperation with UN Women Nigeria to advance Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda for women and girls in Nigeria and beyond. 🇳🇬 🇯🇵 🌍📈

On the 22nd of August 2026, the 5th Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Tournament 🥋 was successfully concluded.

At the closing ceremony, remarks were delivered by H.E. SUZUKI Hideo, Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria, and Dr. Dimkpa Chukwudi, President of the Karate Federation. The ceremony also featured the presentation of medals and certificates to outstanding athletes across the Gold, Silver, and Bronze categories.

On 26 August, Ms. TAKAHASHI Misako, Director-General, Assistant Minister of African Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and H.E. Ambassador SUZUKI Hideo paid a courtesy call on Ms. Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef, UNICEF Nigeria Country Representative.

They exchanged views on the humanitarian situation in Nigeria, UNICEF’s work on the ground and successful partnership models between the Japanese private sector and UNICEF in other African countries.

Ms. TAKAHASHI expressed appreciation for UNICEF’s dedicated work in support of women and children, commended the Japanese Junior Professional Officer (JPO) who is attached to UNICEF Nigeria for her contributions, and encouraged her to make the most of this valuable opportunity at UNICEF Nigeria. She underscored Japan’s commitment to working closely with UNICEF to strengthen resilience and deliver brighter futures for crisis-affected populations in Nigeria.

[Kick-off Meeting for Japan-Supported Yam Research Project at IITA]

🇯🇵🇳🇬 On 12 August, Deputy Head of Mission KOZAKI Hitoshi attended the kick-off meeting of the project “Improving Food Security and Nutrition in Africa: Advancing Yam Productivity and Nutritional/Functional Traits” at IITA in Ibadan.

In his remarks, DHM Kozaki highlighted the importance of translating research outcomes into tangible benefits for farmers and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting food security and sustainable agricultural development in Nigeria.

Following the ceremony, he visited IITA’s farmland and laboratories to learn more about ongoing research and innovation in yam production. 🌱🔬

Japan has been working closely with IITA for more than 30 years to promote agricultural productivity and improve livelihoods in Nigeria. 🤝

{Japan Supports Rice Seed Production and Agricultural Mechanization in Nigeria}

On 10 August 2026, H.E. Ambassador Suzuki Hideo participated in the Official Handover Ceremony of the Project for the Enhancement of Rice Seed Production System in Nigeria, held at the National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI) in Badeggi, Niger State.

Supported by Japan through Grant Aid, the project provides agricultural machinery and equipment to strengthen rice seed production, promote mechanisation, and contribute to food security. Ambassador Suzuki reaffirmed Japan’s commitment, expressed at TICAD 9, to supporting African countries in achieving sustainable economic growth, food security, and resilient agricultural systems.

The handover marks another milestone in the longstanding Japan–Nigeria partnership.😊

For four consecutive years, the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria and the Karate Federation of Nigeria have co-hosted the Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Tournament. This has brought together karate athletes, coaches, officials, and enthusiasts in celebration of discipline and sportsmanship.

As we prepare for this year’s competition, we look forward to another exciting showcase of talent and dedication, while continuing to strengthen the friendship between Japan and Nigeria through sport.
