It is encouraging to see the conversation around local government elections evolving to include important governance outcomes such as efficiency, accountability, and service delivery. The heart of democracy lies in how effectively leadership serves communities at the grassroots.

The 13th National Delegates’ Conference offered space to reflect on ongoing challenges and consider practical ways forward. As a programme, we remain committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen the capacity of State Independent Electoral Commissions and improve local leadership recruitment processes. Strengthening grassroots democracy contributes to a more inclusive and resilient democratic system.

On Friday, we hosted a high-level media and civil society roundtable to mark 14 years of the Freedom of Information Act in Nigeria.

The event brought together key stakeholders to reaffirm the FOI Act as a cornerstone of transparency, citizen participation, and accountable governance.

Chaired by the former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and attended by senior officials and media leaders, the roundtable underscored the urgent need to strengthen compliance and deepen the use of FOI in Nigeria’s democratic process.

A timely and necessary gathering.

What one word describes the EU-SDGN?

For one of our colleagues, it was timely.

We convened a national consultation to strengthen the reporting of women’s issues in elections and democracy.
Why? Because inclusive reporting shapes inclusive governance. With female journalists at the forefront, we are building a media space that reflects the voices, realities, and rights of women in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Today, we celebrate the dreams and voices of Nigerian children. At EU-SDGN, we believe democracy begins with the next generation. Every child deserves a future of inclusion, rights, and opportunity. Happy Children’s Day!

Disability awakening.

That was the choice of a colleague when asked to describe the EU-SDGN. Because inclusive democracy must recognise, amplify and prioritise the voices of persons with disabilities.

We are pleased to support the 13th National Delegates Conference of FOSIECON, where participants are calling for bold reforms to strengthen State Independent Electoral Commissions.
The call? Independence, autonomy, and credibility, not scrapping or replacement.
