NEW YEAR CELEBRATION: CORPS MARSHAL SHEHU MOHAMMED COMMENDS STAFF, CALLS FOR STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP IN THE NEW YEAR

As the year 2024 winds down to the end, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Shehu Mohammed has commended the staff for their commitment to the campaign for safer road environment which led to the outstanding successes recorded in the outgoing year. He called for strategic partnership with relevant stakeholders in the joint campaign for sustained aggression against the menace of road traffic crashes in the country.

Corps Marshal Shehu in his new year message further noted with satisfaction the high performances by the staff in the outgoing year and gave assurances that Management is committed to enunciating welfare policies that could boost their morals for sustained productivity and improved service delivery to the people. While praying for a more successful new year for all staff and Nigerians at large, the Corps Marshal enjoined everyone to be prepared for the tasks ahead by joining hands to tackle the menace of road traffic crashes with greater aggression in 2025.

The Corps Marshal expressed his Management's appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his morale and logistics support for the FRSC which he said, created the enabling environment that made the successes recorded by the Corps in the outgoing year possible. He however, appeals to the strategic stakeholders to continue to rally support for the FRSC, saying road safety is a shared responsibility which no single organization, individual or government agencies can tackle effectively alone.

While recalling some of the challenges encountered by the Corps in the outgoing year to include fatal crashes recorded in parts of the country, resulting in loss of many lives and valuable property and failure of some drivers to observe some basic traffic rules and regulations as well as violence against personnel of the Corps in parts of the country, the Corps Marshal restated his commitment to measures that could address such challenges in the new year. According to him, beliefs that make people to ignore the basic traffic rules and regulations and penchant for showing militant behaviours towards the personnel of the corps would not be condoned in the new year.

"We have said it several times that road traffic crashes don't just happen, they are caused and can be averted. That's why we elevated our public enlightenment programs this year to town hall meetings for conversation with cross sections of the people and strengthened the powers of the passengers to talk to drivers whenever they noticed something going wrong in any vehicles they are in.

"We have also enjoined our operatives to continue to show restraint in the face of provocations through our civil approach to the management of traffic," the Corps Marshal stated.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed assures Nigerians of the commitment of the FRSC to greater vigilance on the nation's highways and wishes all greater prosperity and safer motoring experiences in 2025.

CORPS MARSHAL SHEHU MOHAMMED WARNS PASSENGERS AGAINST BOARDING VEHICLES WITH COMPROMISED SAFETY STANDARDS

As end of the year travels keep gathering expected momentum making the roads busier than they were in the previous months, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has stepped up its advocacy and sensitisation campaigns as Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed urges commuters to be at alert and mindful of drivers who show signs of recklessness and drunkenness, before embarking or during their journeys.

This has become overly imperative in view of the recent crashes that occurred in Jebba, Kwara State on Thursday 26 December, 2024 and the other that happened on the Owo-Ikare route, before Ose bridge on 28 December, 2024.

Pursuant to this, the Corps Marshal has observed that the recorded road crashes occurred due to the negligence or recklessness of drivers and the inability of passengers to checkmate them, call them to order or even report them to FRSC or other security agencies along their routes.

To mitigate this risk of preventable crashes on the nation's highways, commuters are advised to exercise caution when boarding vehicles, be aware of their surroundings and always ensure that their drivers are not under any influence before or during the trips.

While sympathizing with the victims and the families of those involved in the crashes, he emphasized that the safety of all road users is of utmost importance, the Corps Marshal, urged commuters to take responsibility for their safety. This effort is to support all the necessary interventions that the Corps has put in place.

He further highlighted some of the roles of the passengers which include but not limited to checking the driver's behaviour and attitude before boarding, assessing the vehicle's condition, including tires, brakes, and lights system.

By taking these simple precautions, the Corps Marshal believes that commuters can significantly reduce their risk of being involved in road crashes.

NIGERIANS APPLAUD FRSC AS CORPS MARSHAL URGES SUSTAINED VIGILANCE ON THE HIGHWAYS

As the first phase of the end of year special patrol by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) ends with the Christmas celebration, and the second phase of the exercise commences towards the new year, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed has urged the personnel to sustain their vigilance and rededicate themselves to the assignment of keeping the roads safer. The Corps Marshal commended the staff for demonstrating commitment and resilience towards ensuring safer road environment during the Christmas, but enjoined them not to rest on their oars as the second phase of the exercise is equally very critical.

Meanwhile, Nigerians who experienced obstruction-free roads during their journeys home for Christmas have continued to applaud the FRSC for ensuring effective traffic management and called for more support to enable the organization tackle the menace of road traffic crashes more effectively during yuletide. According to Mallam Ibrahim Audu, who operates regularly between Abuja and Lokoja, the traffic situation during this year's Christmas was more orderly with less cases of obstruction and hold-ups. This, he attributed to more orderly conduct of the drivers and the overwhelming presence of the FRSC personnel at the various points to direct traffic.

In the same vein, another motorist, Doc Bee who traveled from Bauchi to Yola on the eve of Christmas, and Mr Saeed Lateef, a resident of Ibadan, Oyo state who gave impressions of traffic situations in their various areas gave kudos to men of the FRSC for a job well done. While Doc Bee stressed the need for people to criticize and appraise in order to create a balance, he disclosed that he drove from Bauchi to Yola and was impressed by the organization of the FRSC officers and men directing and coordinating traffics at different points. According to him, what caught his attention most was the presence of Ambulance services at regular points from Bauchi to Yola.

"It's a commendable work. I believe the presence of Ambulance services strongly suggested budgetary improvements. Well done," he stated.

Reacting to the reports of the first phase of the special operations, Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed stated that the strategy of mobilizing the entire workforce and deploying all the logistics to the roads within the period was to give special attention to effective traffic management at this period of the year. The Corps Marshal further noted that while the review of the operations is still ongoing, preliminary reports indicate that so far,, the first phase of the exercise was a huge success and all hands will remain on the decks to ensure that the remaining parts of the exercise is not compromised.

"The morals of the personnel have been boosted through various welfare measures, and their commitment to the goals of freer road environment was what became manifest during the first phase of the exercise" he stated. "Furthermore, our collaboration with relevant stakeholders as well as massive road construction and rehabilitation carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works and FERMA also assisted in making the roads passable," the Corps Marshal added.

It would be recalled that as part of the 2024 end of year special patrol codenamed, "Operation Zero Tolerance," the entire workforce of the FRSC as well as the logistics have been mobilized to the nation's highways from 15 December, 2024 and would remain till 15 January, 2025.

CORPS MARSHAL SHEHU MOHAMMED ADMONISHES MOTORISTS ON SAFE DRIVING DURING CHRISTMAS, RESTATES COMMITMENT TO ENSURING SAFER ROAD ENVIRONMENT

As Christians in Nigeria join the rest of the world to mark the 2024 Christmas celebration, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC}, Shehu Mohammed has called on motorists to adhere strictly to road traffic rules and regulations to make the celebration a peaceful and hitch-free one.

The Corps Marshal gave the admonition in his Christmas message in which he restated his earlier commitment to creating safer road environment during the Yuletide. The Corps Marshal appealed to Nigerians to be reflective at this period of heightened human and vehicular movements to avoid any road mishaps that could undermine the annual celebration.

He also tasked personnel to ensure free flow of traffic and a zero-death Yuletide celebrations. The entire workforce and logistics have been mobilised to all the identified black spots and would remain there untill 15 January 2025. This is to ensure that all those that travelled home for Christmas and new year return safely.

The Corps Marshal called on Nigerians to join the FRSC in the ongoing campaign for safer road environment. He further urged Christians to offer special prayers at their various Churches as they celebrate the birth of Christ. Stating that as they worship in various Churches, it's imperative that prayers are made specially for peace and safety.

The Corps Marshal admonished road users to tune into the FRSC National Traffic Radio, 107.1 FM for traffic alerts and updates. And in cases of emergency, he implored Nigerians to dial the FRSC Emergency number:122 as the Call Centre will remain opened throughout the festive period and beyond to attend to all distress calls.

It would be recalled that annually, FRSC deploys human and material resources along the major corridors in the country to manage the expected traffic surge during the Yuletide and the New Year. This year's special operation codenamed, "Operation Zero Tolerance" which commenced on December 15, 2024 is expected to last till January, 15, 2025.
