NEMA DG ACTIVATES NATIONAL EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTRE FOR 2026 FLOOD RESPONSE

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has activated the Agency’s National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) to enhance the coordination, collation and processing of reliable data and information on the 2026 flood situation across the country, with a view to strengthening preparedness, planning and response efforts.

Speaking during the activation and inauguration of members of the NEOC at the NEMA Headquarters in Abuja, Mrs. Zubaida Umar charged the team to be diligent, professional and proactive in the discharge of their responsibilities.

She emphasized the importance of ensuring that information generated and disseminated from the Centre is factual, timely and reliable to support effective decision-making and efficient management of flooding and other climate-induced disasters in the country.

The Director General stated that the activation of the NEOC is part of NEMA's proactive measures to strengthen national preparedness and ensure effective coordination of stakeholders during the 2026 rainy season. She noted that timely access to credible information is critical to early action, deployment of resources and protection of lives and livelihoods in communities at risk.

The Deputy Director, Planning, Research and Forecasting of NEMA, Mr. Tony Ephraim assured the Director General that members of the Centre would work diligently to ensure effective monitoring, data collection, analysis and information management to support timely decision-making and coordinated response to flood emergencies and other climate-related hazards.

The National Emergency Operations Centre will serve as a central hub for monitoring the 2026 flood situation, harmonising information from relevant sources and supporting coordination among stakeholders for effective preparedness and response throughout the rainy season.

NEMA Abuja Operations Office Coordinates Reception of 32 Nigerian Returnees from Türkiye

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Abuja Operations Office (AOO), on Monday coordinated the reception of 32 Nigerian nationals returned from the Republic of Türkiye at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The returnees arrived aboard a chartered aircraft following an official notification from the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the Federal Government's ongoing efforts to facilitate the safe, orderly, and dignified return of Nigerian citizens.

In line with its statutory mandate, NEMA activated a coordinated reception process involving relevant government agencies and humanitarian partners to ensure the returnees received immediate support upon arrival.

The reception exercise included documentation, profiling, medical screening, and the provision of humanitarian assistance before the returnees were handed over to the appropriate authorities for further reintegration.

Speaking during the exercise, the Head of NEMA Abuja Operations Office, Pharm. Zakari Abubakar, reaffirmed the Agency's commitment to protecting the dignity and welfare of vulnerable persons through effective inter-agency collaboration.

He noted that every returning Nigerian deserves to be received with dignity, compassion, and respect, while encouraging the returnees to embrace the opportunity to rebuild their lives and take advantage of available government reintegration programmes.

Pharm. Abubakar also commended the strong collaboration among participating agencies, describing coordinated action as essential to ensuring seamless reception and sustainable reintegration support for returning migrants.

Stakeholders involved in the exercise included the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, airport authorities, security agencies, and other relevant partners.

The reception underscores the Federal Government's commitment, through NEMA and its partners, to ensuring the humane treatment and successful reintegration of returning Nigerian nationals.

NEMA Distributes Relief Materials to Armed Banditry Victims in Isa/Sabon Birni Federal Constituency, Sokoto State

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), through its Sokoto Operations Office, has distributed relief materials to persons affected by armed banditry in Isa/Sabon Birni Federal Constituency of Sokoto State as part of the Federal Government's humanitarian intervention to support victims of insecurity.

The distribution exercise was conducted in Sokoto metropolis due to the prevailing security challenges in the affected communities. It was carried out in the presence of traditional rulers, community representatives, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure a transparent, orderly, and accountable distribution process.

The relief materials distributed included bags of rice, beans, spaghetti, vegetable oil, tomato paste, seasoning cubes, mosquito nets, blankets, and mattresses. The intervention is aimed at alleviating the hardship faced by affected households, improving their living conditions, and supporting their recovery.

Speaking during the exercise, the Sarkin Gobir-Isa, Alhaji Nasiru Usman Ahmad, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government through NEMA for the timely intervention. NEMA Intensifies Flood Preparedness Campaign with Church Sensitization in Kaduna

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Kaduna Operations Office, has continued its nationwide disaster risk reduction campaign with a flood sensitization and awareness programme in churches across Kaduna Metropolis as part of efforts to enhance public preparedness during the 2026 rainy season.

The sensitization exercise, led by the Head of the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Unit, Mrs. Ikramat Umar, was designed to educate worshippers on flood risks, promote disaster preparedness, and encourage proactive measures to safeguard lives and property.

During the engagements, participants were enlightened on the five phases of disaster management—prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery—and the critical role individuals and communities play in reducing disaster risks.

The worshippers were also briefed on the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) released by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), which identified parts of Kaduna State as being at risk of flooding during the rainy season.

NEMA highlighted major causes of flooding, including indiscriminate waste disposal, blocked drainage systems, construction on natural waterways, and settlement in flood-prone areas. The Agency also outlined the potential impacts of flooding, such as loss of lives, destruction of homes and infrastructure, displacement of residents, and outbreaks of waterborne diseases.

As part of the sensitization, worshippers were encouraged to adopt preventive measures such as proper waste disposal, regular clearing of drainage channels, compliance with early warning advisories, and timely evacuation from flood-prone areas when necessary. Emergency response telephone numbers were also shared to facilitate prompt reporting of disaster incidents.

The campaign covered ECWA Church, High Cost Narayi; First Nasara Baptist Church, Unguwan Rimi; and Grace Baptist Church, Unguwan Rimi. NEMA noted that the exercise builds on its earlier flood awareness campaign conducted at Sultan Bello Central Mosque and Abba 33 Mosque in Kaduna.

The Agency reaffirmed its commitment to sustained public enlightenment and strengthened collaboration with religious institutions, community leaders and other stakeholders to build safer and more resilient communities.

NEMA Distributes Relief Materials to Fire and Windstorm Victims in Kwara State

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), through its Minna Operations Office, has distributed relief materials to households affected by fire and windstorm disasters across nine Local Government Areas of Kwara State as part of the Federal Government's humanitarian intervention to support disaster-affected communities.

The flag-off and distribution exercise, held on 1st August, 2026, at the Desert Herald Premises in Ilorin, was carried out in collaboration with the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency (KWASEMA) and other relevant stakeholders.

The exercise was led by the Head of Relief and Rehabilitation Unit, Mr. Usman Abdulaziz, who represented the Head of Operations, Mr. Hussaini Isah. Speaking during the event, he said the intervention was aimed at alleviating the hardship experienced by affected households and reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment, through NEMA, to providing timely humanitarian assistance and strengthening community resilience.

The distribution was witnessed by the Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency (KWASEMA), Mr. Moshood Sa'ad Magaji, representatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), affected Local Government Councils, community leaders and other stakeholders, ensuring a transparent, orderly and accountable exercise.

Relief materials distributed included rice, beans, maize, vegetable oil, tomato paste, seasoning cubes, detergent, mosquito nets and iodized salt.

In separate remarks, representatives of the Chairmen of Ilorin West and Edu Local Government Areas expressed appreciation to the Federal Government through NEMA for the timely intervention. They commended the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, for providing much-needed support to affected households.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Awoyele Veronica from Oke-Ero Local Government Area expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and NEMA, describing the intervention as timely and impactful in helping victims recover from the disasters.

The intervention underscores the Federal Government's continued commitment, through NEMA, to providing prompt humanitarian assistance and bringing relief to communities affected by disasters across the country.

NEMA Responds to Smoke Detection Incident at Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Operations Office, responded to a smoke detection incident at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on 2nd August, 2026, following the activation of emergency response protocols.

Upon receiving the alert, emergency procedures were immediately activated, resulting in the deployment of firefighting teams, airport emergency services and other relevant response units. Six automatic fire suppressors were triggered as part of the airport's fire protection system while responders swiftly isolated the source of the smoke and prevented any escalation.

The Head of NEMA Lagos Operations Office, Mr. Mohammed Olatunde, visited the scene and met with the Terminal 2 Manager, Abdullahi Umar, and the Head of Safety, MMA2, Mrs. Charlie Ndukuba. They confirmed that the smoke originated from the terminal's Air Handling Units (AHUs).

The incident was successfully contained without any reported casualties, and all activated fire suppressors were fully accounted for. Emergency response teams remained at the terminal to conduct comprehensive post-incident assessments, including inspections of the Air Handling Units, evaluation of any residual hazards and verification of the facility's overall safety.

As a precautionary measure, access to Terminal 2 remained restricted pending the completion of safety evaluations, while preliminary assessments of the incident's impact on airport operations continued.

NEMA reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with airport authorities and other emergency response agencies to ensure the safety of lives, property and critical infrastructure through prompt and coordinated emergency response.

NEMA Coordinates Response to Fire Outbreak at Federal Mortgage Bank Building in Abuja

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) coordinated the emergency response to a fire outbreak at the Federal Mortgage Bank building in the Central Business District, Abuja, following a distress alert received at about 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, 1st August 2026.

Upon receiving the alert, NEMA activated the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service and other critical response agencies, while deploying its Kubwa Emergency Response and Ambulance Bay (ERAB) team to coordinate response operations at the scene.

Under the supervision of the Director of Search and Rescue (DSAR), emergency responders successfully contained the fire and prevented its spread to adjoining structures. Although no lives were lost, the incident resulted in significant damage to property and official documents.

The fire was completely extinguished at about 11:45 p.m., while damping-down operations continued to eliminate residual heat and prevent a secondary ignition.

Agencies that participated in the response included the Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service, Nigeria Police Force, and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Fire Unit, whose coordinated efforts ensured the successful containment of the incident.

On behalf of the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, the Director of Search and Rescue commended the responding agencies for their professionalism, swift action and collaboration, reaffirming NEMA's commitment to strengthening coordinated emergency response and building national resilience against disasters.

NEMA Distributes Relief Materials to Flood-Affected Communities in Bauchi State

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Gombe Operations Office, has distributed relief materials to households affected by flooding in Ningi/Warji Federal Constituency of Bauchi State as part of the Federal Government’s humanitarian intervention to support disaster-affected communities.

The distribution exercise was conducted in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure transparency, accountability and the equitable distribution of relief items to verified beneficiaries.

The exercise was witnessed by Legislative Aides to the Honourable Member representing Ningi/Warji Federal Constituency, officials of the Ningi and Warji Local Government Councils, community leaders, security agencies and members of the media, who monitored the process to ensure fairness and orderliness.
