NHRC CONCLUDES TWO-DAY TRAINING ON DRUG PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND CARE

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has concluded a two-day training on Drug Prevention, Treatment and Care (DPTC) for staff of the Commission, organised in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Education As a Vaccine.

The training provided an opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding of drug-related challenges in Nigeria and examine appropriate responses through a human rights-based approach.

Across the two days, discussions covered Nigeria’s evolving drug situation, drug dependency, causes and consequences of drug use, stigma, prevention and harm reduction. Participants also examined the experiences of vulnerable populations, advocacy, human rights and drug users, complaints relating to rights violations, treatment and care, and the relevant legal framework.

The engagement further strengthened the capacity of NHRC staff to recognise and respond to human rights concerns affecting people who use drugs, while promoting approaches that uphold human dignity, non-discrimination, access to care and fundamental rights.

The Commission appreciates the partnership and knowledge shared throughout the training, and looks forward to applying the lessons gained in strengthening its human rights protection and promotion mandate.

NHRC CONTINUES TRAINING ON DRUG PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND CARE

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today continues the second and final day of its two-day training on Drug Prevention, Treatment and Care (DPTC) for staff of the Commission.

Building on the discussions from Day One, which examined the drug situation in Nigeria, emerging trends, drug dependency, the causes of drug use, stigma and approaches to demand and harm reduction, Day Two takes a deeper look at the people affected by drug use and the human rights dimensions of prevention, treatment and care.

Participants are exploring the particular circumstances and vulnerabilities of different groups of people who use drugs, while considering how advocacy can contribute to better protection, access to services and meaningful support.

The training is also strengthening participants' understanding of the relationship between human rights and drug use, including the role of the Commission in receiving, documenting and responding to complaints relating to possible violations of the rights of people affected by drug use.

Discussions further examine treatment approaches and the applicable legal framework, with emphasis on responses that promote dignity, access to appropriate care and respect for fundamental rights.

The two-day engagement reinforces the importance of moving towards a balanced, humane and rights-based approach to drug prevention, treatment and care, while strengthening the capacity of NHRC staff to respond effectively to emerging human rights concerns in this area.

NHRC PARTICIPATES IN TWO-DAY TRAINING ON DRUG PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND CARE

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is participating in a two-day training on Drug Prevention, Treatment and Care (DPTC), which commenced today, 31 August 2026.

The training is designed to strengthen participants' understanding of drug use, prevention, treatment and care, while examining emerging trends and appropriate responses to drug-related challenges in Nigeria.

Day One sessions are focusing on the current situation of drug supply and use in Nigeria, new drug trends, drug dependency, the causes of drug use and the stigma associated with people who use drugs. Participants are also exploring approaches to demand reduction and harm reduction, including their rationale and practical application.

For the National Human Rights Commission, the response to drug-related challenges must remain firmly anchored in human rights, dignity, non-discrimination and access to appropriate treatment and care. People affected by drug use and dependency remain rights-holders and must be treated with dignity and without stigma.

The NHRC will continue to engage in initiatives that promote a balanced, humane and rights-based approach to drug prevention, treatment and care in Nigeria.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is receiving the Long Life Health Awareness Initiative (LOLI), led by Dr. Patrick Ouyanne, on a courtesy visit to explore collaboration in emergency preparedness, first-aid and emergency response training, public safety, ambulance services and medical event coverage. The engagement seeks to strengthen partnerships that promote human dignity, public safety and the protection of fundamental human rights, while supporting the Commission’s mandate.
