🌍🤝 Strengthening humanitarian partnerships in Benue State

As part of his final field mission in Nigeria, former Ambassador Pieter Leenknegt joined a UNHCR-led mission to Benue State, alongside European partners, to gain first-hand insight into the challenges faced by displaced communities and the humanitarian response supporting them.

The mission included visits to communities affected by displacement, where the delegation engaged with humanitarian actors and saw efforts aimed at providing protection, assistance and opportunities for vulnerable women, men and children.

Belgium remains committed to working with Nigeria, UNHCR and international partners to support humanitarian action, protect dignity and promote sustainable solutions for displaced communities.
Together, partnerships make a difference. 🇧🇪🇳🇬

🌍 International Youth Day 2026

From Nigeria to Belgium and beyond, young people may face different realities, but their hopes are often the same: access to quality education, decent work, opportunity, inclusion and a voice in shaping the future.

Young Nigerians continue to demonstrate remarkable creativity, resilience and ambition, contributing to innovation, entrepreneurship and positive change in their communities.

Today, we celebrate their potential and reaffirm the importance of partnerships that create opportunities for young people to learn, connect and lead, while strengthening cooperation between Belgium and Nigeria.

Belgian is a participating country in the Coordinated Maritime Presences, a flexible diplomatic and operational tool launched as a pilot in the Gulf of Guinea in January 2021 to align member states’ naval assets , boost maritime situational awareness and partner with regional coastal states.

On 21 July, our Embassy took part in the handover ceremony for two semi-rigid inflatable high-speed patrol boats to the Nigerian Navy in Lagos. The boats are part of a larger set of 50 (and a program to the tune of 50 million euro) which the European Union hands over to over a dozen countries in the West African region. Fighting piracy and all types of smuggling and trafficking is central to this endeavor.

Ambassador Leenknegt joined EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot and his Portuguese counterpart Paulo Santos, as the handover is part of the EU funded Support to West Africa Integrated Maritime Security program, and as it involved training activities by the Camoes Institute and the Portuguese navy to their Nigerian counterparts in handling these boast (including on the Açores Islands!), with which they are already eminently familiar in their own daily practice.

Our ambassador was proud to participate in the certificates awarding ceremony in the presence of Force Commander Shettima of the regionally oriented and Nigeria-led Common Maritime Task Force, freshly set up at the 70th anniversary celebrations for the Nigerian navy last June.

Later that day, the Portuguese navy guests joined us for the celebration of the Belgian National Day on the mainland in Yaba, Lagos.
