The National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non- Formal Education (NMEC) , is a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Education established in 1990 and charged with the responsibility of eradicating illiteracy from the Country. Its National Headquarters is located in the FCT, Abuja and the Six (6) zonal offices are spread across the geo-political divide of the country: North Central Zo

nal office at Minna; North East Zonal Office at Bauchi; North West Zonal Office at Katsina, South-South Office at Benin City; South East Zonal Office at Owerri and South West Office at Ibadan. Apart from our National Documentation Centre at Kano, we are in close collaboration with State Agencies for Mass Education (SAMEs), statutory bodies set up by respective states to combat scourge of illiteracy in the Country.

We must all contribute our efforts to erradicate illiteracy in our mist. Sensitization and mobilisation of the out of school children to see the importance of education as well the right political will to mobilize resources from both public and private sources are very crucial to get our teaming population educated.

Beyond theoretical and methodological intruments, NMEC must have a paradigm shift in her approach at getting people educated. We must make concerted effort to get to reach out to artisans and technicians in Nigeria to get enlightened about the latest and modern ways of going about their emterprise. The world has moved on into using ICT to get problems solved. Education shld empower the beneficiary.
