Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 4.43% (year-on-year) in real terms in the second quarter of 2026, higher than the 4.23% recorded in the second quarter of 2025. During the quarter under review, agriculture grew by 4.39%, an improvement from the 2.82% recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2025.

The growth of the industry sector stood at 3.96% from 7.46% recorded in the second quarter of 2025, while the services sector recorded a growth of 4.60% from 3.94% in the same quarter of 2025.

In terms of share of the GDP, the services sector contributed more to the aggregate GDP in the
second quarter of 2026 at 56.62% compared to the corresponding quarter of 2025 at 56.53%.

The first Bi-Annual Meeting of the National Consultative Committee on Statistics (NCCS) for 2026 is underway in Kano State, with the theme: “Unlocking Data Dividends for National Development: Advancing Administrative Statistics and Data-Driven Governance.”
The meeting brings together key stakeholders within Nigeria’s National Statistical System to deliberate on strengthening administrative statistics, improving coordination across data-producing institutions, and advancing the use of reliable evidence in policymaking and governance.

The National Bureau of Statistics was delighted to welcome the Executive Governor of Kano State, His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who was ably represented by the Secretary to the Kano State Government, Alh. Umar Farouk Ibrahim, who formally declared the meeting open.

In his remarks, the Governor reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s commitment to data-driven governance, while expressing the State’s readiness to support the growth and development of statistics as a critical tool for effective planning, policymaking and development.
He also emphasised the importance of strengthening the statistical ecosystem and ensuring that data is effectively harnessed to support development outcomes in Kano State and Nigeria at large.

In his keynote address, the Statistician-General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of the NBS, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, highlighted the evolving nature of Nigeria’s statistical landscape and the growing demand for timely, credible and disaggregated information.

As the Coordinator of the National Statistical System, the NBS continues to work with stakeholders across the country to strengthen statistical systems, promote innovation, improve data accessibility and advance the use of statistics for evidence-based decision-making.

The NCCS meeting provides an important platform to strengthen collaboration, identify practical actions and deepen the connection between data producers and data users towards unlocking the full dividend of data for national development.

In July 2026, the Headline inflation rate stood at 15.43%, down from 15.91% in June 2026 and stood at 24.94% in the same month of the preceding year (July 2025). Looking at the movement, the July 2026 Headline inflation rate showed a decrease of 0.48% compared to the June 2026 Headline inflation rate.

On a month-on-month basis, the Headline inflation rate in July 2026 was 1.57%, which was 0.09% lower than the rate recorded in June 2026 (1.66%). This means that in July 2026, the rate of increase in the average price level was lower than the rate of increase in the average price level in June 2026.

The Food inflation rate in July 2026 was 20.31% on a year-on-year basis and stood at 26.20% in the same month of the preceding year (July 2025). On a month-on-month basis, the Food inflation rate in July 2026 was 5.56%, up by 1.82% points from June 2026 (3.75%).

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) to strengthen agricultural data systems and support evidence-based planning, monitoring and decision-making across Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

The partnership establishes a framework for collaboration in agricultural data validation, exchange and harmonisation, while leveraging NBS’s expertise in official statistics to improve the quality, credibility and utilisation of data generated through NADF programmes. It will also support the development of standardised methodologies for impact assessment, strengthen monitoring and evaluation systems, and enhance results-based management.

Through this collaboration, both institutions will undertake joint agricultural surveys, integrate administrative data, and improve the measurement of programme performance and social impact. These efforts will provide policymakers, investors and development partners with reliable statistical evidence to support effective programme design and investment decisions.

At NBS, we remain committed to building strategic partnerships that strengthen Nigeria’s National Statistical System and ensure that quality data continues to drive sustainable agricultural development and national growth.

The National Bureau of Statistics today signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), marking an important step towards strengthening data governance and promoting responsible data management in Nigeria. The partnership provides a framework for ensuring that personal data is collected, processed, shared, disseminated and managed in a lawful, secure and accountable manner.

Through this collaboration, NBS and NDPC will work together to provide technical support, strengthen institutional capacity through training, promote secure data sharing and implement initiatives that enhance data management across the National Statistical System. The partnership is aligned with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act and reinforces the commitment of both institutions to upholding the highest standards of data governance.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Statistician-General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of NBS, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, described the collaboration as a significant milestone in advancing data accountability and security for national development. He noted that the partnership bridges the gap between data utility and data protection while harmonising the efforts of both institutions to eliminate duplication and improve efficiency in the management of Nigeria’s data ecosystem.

In his remarks, the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, commended the Statistician-General for his commitment to strengthening data protection through the signing of the MoU. He emphasised that the collaboration will contribute to building a secure, trusted and data-driven nation by reinforcing responsible data governance practices and supporting sustainable national development.

The Memorandum of Understanding reflects the shared commitment of NBS and NDPC to fostering a culture of responsible data management, strengthening public trust in official statistics and advancing evidence-based governance through secure, ethical and collaborative data practices.

The Statistician-General of the Federation, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran today paid a courtesy visit to the Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) Dr. Mathew Adepoju to strengthen collaboration between the two institutions.

The visit focused on advancing partnerships in the seamless exchange of geospatial data and statistics, as well as leveraging Geospatial intelligence to enhance survey planning, data collection, and evidence-based decision-making.

This collaboration underscores the National Bureau of Statistics’ commitment to harnessing innovation, technology, and strategic partnerships to improve the quality, accuracy, and timeliness of official statistics for national development.

In June 2026, the Headline inflation rate was 15.91%, down from 15.93% in May 2026 and stood at 25.29% in the same month of the preceding year (June 2025).

On a month-on-month basis, the Headline inflation rate in June 2026 was 1.66%, which was 0.09% lower than the rate recorded in May 2026 (1.75%).

The Food inflation rate in June 2026 was 17.52% on a year-on-year basis. On a month-on-month basis, the Food inflation rate in June 2026 was 3.75%, up by 0.77% points from May 2026 (2.98%).

Total customer numbers in Q4 2025 stood at 12.16 million, up from 12.03 million in Q3 2025, representing a 1.11% quarter-on-quarter increase. On a year-on-year basis, the number of customers declined by 8.52%, from 13.30 million recorded in Q4 2024.

Similarly, the number of metered customers reached 6.97 million in Q4 2025, representing a 4.58% increase from 6.66 million recorded in the preceding quarter. On a year-on-year basis, metered customers increased by 12.18%, from 6.21 million recorded in Q4 2024.

The average retail price paid by consumers for Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) in May 2026 was ₦1,596.25, representing a 55.31% increase from May 2025 (₦1,027.76).

Likewise, comparing the average price value with that of the previous month (i.e., April 2026), the average retail price increased by 4.13% from ₦1,532.93.
