HOUSE CONGRATULATES 33RD NBA PRESIDENT, OYINKANSOLA BADEJO-OKUSANYA, SAN
..looks forward to deepening collaboration on legal and institutional reform, justice administration.

Abuja, FCT | Tuesday, September 1, 2026 – The House of Representatives extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, FCIArb, SAN, on her election and swearing-in as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

The House also congratulates the newly elected national officers and representatives of the Association following the 2026 NBA Elections, and wishes them a successful tenure in service to the Bar, the justice system and the nation.

Mrs. Badejo-Okusanya's emergence is a significant milestone for the Nigerian legal profession and a welcome advancement for women in leadership. As the first woman to lead the NBA in 35 years and the first elected female President of one of the largest and most influential bar associations in Africa, her election is historic and a beacon of inspiration to women in law and beyond.

The House further notes with commendation that six of the ten members of the new NBA National Executive are women, reflecting strong representation of women at the highest level of the Association. Her emergence comes at a significant moment for the profession, with women now holding prominent leadership positions across the Bench, the Bar and legal education.

An accomplished arbitrator and public policy professional with more than two decades of experience, Mrs. Badejo-Okusanya also brings valuable familiarity with legislative engagement and public-private dialogue through her membership of the National Assembly Business Environment Roundtable (NASSBER).

The House is particularly encouraged by Mrs. Badejo-Okusanya's stated vision of a “bolder, inclusive, innovative and respected Bar” that works for every lawyer and reclaims its space as a credible voice for justice, democracy and the rule of law. The House welcomes this vision as an important contribution to strengthening the legal profession and its role in public life.

Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Rep. Mamudu Abdullahi (APC, Niger), congratulated Mrs. Badejo-Okusanya on her emergence and expressed confidence in her leadership of the NBA.

Similarly, Chairman of the House Committee on Justice, Rep. Olumide Osoba (APC, Ogun), congratulated her and particularly welcomed her stated position that “the NBA must engage constructively with government, civil society, development partners, and the private sector while remaining firmly committed to its principles.”

In furtherance of Agenda 3: Law Reform of the 10th Assembly's Legislative Agenda, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, the House remains committed to constructive engagement with the NBA on legal and institutional reform.

The House also acknowledges the contributions of the immediate past NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, and his National Executive Council over the past two years.

The House of Representatives wishes Mrs. Badejo-Okusanya and the new leadership of the NBA a successful and impactful tenure.

SPEAKER ABBAS FELICITATES SULTAN ABUBAKAR AT 70

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., GCON, has extended his felicitations to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar, on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

Speaker Abbas stated that the Sultan, serving as the spiritual leader of Nigeria's Muslims in his roles as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and head of Jama'atu Nasril Islam (JNI), stands as a symbol of leadership, unity, and patriotism.

The Speaker commended the revered Muslim leader for leveraging his leadership to foster peace and stability among Nigerians across religious, ethnic, and political divides.

The Speaker highlighted how the Sultan has consistently offered wise counsel to the political class and has never hesitated to speak truth to power when needed.

While praising Sultan Abubakar for being an inspiration to many kings and princes, Speaker Abbas said the Muslim leader's style is worthy of emulation by all who desire purposeful leadership.

The Speaker prayed to Almighty Allah (SWT) to grant the Sultan more grace, blessings, longevity, and sound health as he continues to guide Muslims in Nigeria towards service and worship of the Creator.

House Mourns Passing of Veteran Journalist and Media Entrepreneur, Dotun Oladipo

Abuja, FCT | Thursday, August 27, 2026 – The House of Representatives mourns the passing of Mr. Dotun Samson Oladipo, veteran journalist, media entrepreneur, Publisher of The Eagle Online and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, who died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 56.

Oladipo’s distinguished career spanned Nigeria’s traditional and digital media, with experience at Newswatch, the Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass, The Sun and PUNCH Newspapers, where he served as Politics Editor. He later brought his extensive newsroom experience into digital publishing with the establishment of The Eagle Online, contributing to the growth and professionalisation of online journalism in Nigeria.

Through The Eagle Online, Oladipo contributed significantly to public understanding of national affairs and democratic institutions. The House recognises, in particular, his role in amplifying the activities and legislative work of the House of Representatives through credible and balanced reporting, providing an important channel through which legislative activities reached a wider public.

His journalism also took him to conflict zones in West Africa. In 1998, while covering events surrounding the restoration of former President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah in Sierra Leone, Oladipo and other Nigerian journalists subsequently travelled to Liberia, where they were detained by forces loyal to then President Charles Taylor. They were later extracted by Nigerian ECOMOG troops, with Oladipo sustaining injuries during the ordeal. The episode reflected the considerable risks undertaken by journalists reporting Nigeria’s regional peacekeeping engagements at the time.

That same commitment to journalism was evident in his service to the wider media profession. He was the founding President of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society (IMPCMS) and served as President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) from 2017 to 2021, contributing to efforts to organise and professionalise Nigeria’s growing online publishing industry.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Oladipo was remembered by colleagues and associates as a gentleman: calm, easy-going, thoughtful and dependable. These qualities earned him the respect and affection of many whose paths crossed his.

At a time when credible journalism remains indispensable to informed citizenship, public accountability and democratic governance, his passing represents a significant loss to Nigeria’s media community and national life.

The House of Representatives extends its heartfelt condolences to his family; the management and staff of The Eagle Online and Premium Eagle Media Limited; members of GOCOP and IMPCMS; and his colleagues, associates and friends across the media industry.

The House honours his decades of service to Nigerian journalism, his courage in the pursuit of truth, his contribution to the development of digital media, and the quiet decency and humanity for which he will be remembered.

May God grant his family and loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss and grant his soul eternal rest.

Maulud: Speaker Abbas urges Muslims on adherence to Islamic tenets

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., GCON, has extended warm greetings to Muslims in Nigeria as they join the rest of the world to mark Eid-el-Maulud (Maulud Nabiyy) in commemoration of the birth and life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Maulud is traditionally celebrated on the 12th day of Rabi'al-Awwal, which is the third month in the Islamic Hijri calendar. The date for Maulud in 2026 falls on Tuesday, August 25, as per the Gregorian calendar.

Speaker Abbas stated that Muslims are obligated to follow his example and incorporate the Islamic principles he established into their daily lives.

He reminded Muslims of the importance of Prophet Muhammad’s noble birth, the influence of his teachings, and the examples his life set for humanity. The Speaker noted that this benefits not only Muslims but the entire world.

Speaker Abbas called on Muslims to keep showing love, compassion, and charity not only to each other but also to non-Muslims, highlighting that Islamic values must continue to serve as their compass in all areas of life.

The Speaker wished Muslims joyful celebrations.
