For many Nigerian workers, access to affordable housing is one of the most tangible benefits of participating in the National Housing Fund (NHF) Scheme.

This was at the heart of discussions when the management of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), led by its Director-General, Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, visited the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) to discuss housing opportunities for its workforce, outstanding allocations and NHF refunds for retired staff.

A key issue raised was the outstanding housing allocation for 36 NHIA staff who were allocated homes at Brains and Hammers’ Bungalow City Estate, Abuja, but were yet to take possession.

FMBN Managing Director/Chief Executive, Shehu Usman Osidi, assured the delegation that the Bank would work to resolve the matter, emphasising that contributors who meet the requirements and follow the prescribed process should be able to enjoy the benefits of the NHF Scheme.

The engagement also explored opportunities for NHIA staff to access mortgage financing under ongoing housing initiatives, including the Renewed Hope City in Karsana.

Effective resolution of mortgage-related challenges requires more than prolonged correspondence; it requires direct engagement, collaboration and a clear understanding of the issues involved.

This was the focus when the management of Abuja Property Development Company (APDC) Ltd. visited the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) to discuss outstanding disbursement, documentation and legal matters affecting some of its subscribers, as well as opportunities to strengthen the partnership between both organisations.

FMBN Managing Director/Chief Executive, Shehu Usman Osidi, directed the establishment of a joint technical team to review the outstanding issues, identify the specific causes of delays and agree on practical solutions.

He also highlighted the Bank’s NHF Direct initiative, which enables affected NHF subscribers to engage directly with FMBN where a Primary Mortgage Bank becomes inactive or ceases operations.

The Honourable Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Engr. Dr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma, PhD, presented the keys to the beneficiaries, describing the delivery as a demonstration of what can be achieved through strong stakeholder collaboration.

FMBN MD/CE, Shehu Usman Osidi, reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to ensuring that no NHF contributor is abandoned, assuring that the remaining 122 units will be delivered before the end of 2026.

For Nigeria to successfully expand access to affordable housing, there must be strong partnerships, innovative financing and a shared commitment to putting more Nigerians in decent homes.

‎The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) took that step forward in Ebonyi State with a proposed partnership with the Ebonyi State Government to develop an 800-unit workers’ housing estate, with plans to scale it up to 3,000 units in subsequent phases.

‎The proposed initiative was the focus of a courtesy visit by FMBN’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Shehu Usman Osidi, to Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru at the Government House, Abakaliki, on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. He was represented by the Executive Director, Business Development and Portfolio Management, Mrs. Chinenye Chinedu Anosike.

‎The project will be delivered through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), with the State Government providing land and infrastructure, FMBN providing financing, and an accredited developer undertaking construction.

Ground-breaking for 250-unit Renewed Hope Civil Service Estate at Dukpa, Gwagwalada, Abuja.‎

Expanding access to affordable housing for workers remains a key priority of the Federal Government, with partnerships across the housing sector driving concrete interventions for sustainable homeownership.

‎As part of this effort, the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) have commenced the development of a 250-unit Renewed Hope Civil Service Estate at Dukpa, Gwagwalada, Abuja.

‎The estate comprises two- and three-bedroom bungalows and is expected to be completed and delivered within six months.

‎For FMBN, the provision of housing must go beyond construction. Managing Director/Chief Executive, Shehu Usman Osidi, reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to complementing the development with accessible and affordable mortgage financing for eligible beneficiaries.

‎The project builds on the ₦10 billion housing loan facility provided through FMBN and the Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board (FGSHLB) to support the homeownership needs of federal civil servants.

‎This is another step towards ensuring that more Nigerian workers can access decent housing and achieve sustainable homeownership.
